  • We left the Quiver Tree Forest late afternoon and by the time we reached the small town of Loeriesfontein it was almost dusk, so we didn't have much time to look around. We headed to Smurfs Den, our accommodation for the evening. The next morning, after coffee, we left and started exploring. We just loved the Windpump Museum, which is one of only two in the world. The town is in a basin which is surrounded by mountains and it was developed in 1894 around the general store. In our video you will see that it is the local Spar now, but the original store was established 128 years ago. We found that very fascinating! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #loeriesfontein #windpumpmuseum

Thank you, awesome that you liked it. I enjoyed flying the drone over the area so much, such a typical Karoo landscape, not to mention all the windpumps. 😃

What a peaceful little town. It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Enjoyed watching thank you both.

Always wanted to visit Loeriesfontein. What a charming town! Love the old buildings. And the windpompe! My fave coffee is moerkoffie. Sterk, swart en soet!

It was a fantastic place to visit. I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the collection of wind pumps and am so glad that someone had the forethought to preserve some of them, one sees less and less of them as one travels through the Karoo. Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍🏻🚗

Coffee is the first thing we do when we open our eyes, especially when we're travelling. 😁☕ We just can't seem to get going without that first cuppa. Glad you enjoyed Loeriesfontein!

Have to agree with you re Ricoffy though its better when mixed with Nescafe. The drone footage of the town showing its expanse was great to watch. I have only been there by plane. Your guesthouse looked welcoming, I also thought that you were in for a noisy night. Its great to see the accommodation nicely booked.

Wow, it must've been quite an experience to fly into the area, I can only imagine that aerial view! 🛩️🤩 The solar and wind projects in the area seem to be giving the town a much-appreciated injection and it was good to see that the locals are supported. The accommodation was all we needed and we were super comfortable and happy to have these folks from all over the country as our neighbours.

I agree with Graeme the drone footage is amazing. Growing up on a farm the wind pumps were do good to see again. Never realised the blades of the wind turbines were so long wow. Well done.

Thank you, happy that you enjoyed the drone footage. It was great to see the town from above. The windpumps were amazing, they've become such a symbol of the Karoo, one sees them absolutely everywhere! 😁

Certainly wonderful to see and visit these little Karoo dorpies. An entirely different type of beauty, but I could personally never live in such a barren environment - I thrive where there’s plenty of water and greenery.

We often get asked where we would live if we could choose any place in South Africa and we always say we won't be able to choose because we love every type of landscape for the fact that they're so very different. We feel a different love for the Karoo for two reasons: gravel roads abound and the silence is much more intense there. And while we love trees, rivers, the coast and mountains, the bareness and barrenness of the Karoo have found a special place in our hearts and we will always return. 😍🚗

A descendant of Fred Turner sings a song called "Die rooinek en die Gouwsblom". Applicable to many of us in SA. The windmills are to be seen in the background

How interesting! I did a quick search, but can't find anything about the song online. We're familiar with a Turner family member, so I'll definitely ask her about that when we see her again. Loeriesfontein was a cool place and we just had to check out those windpumps. They were incredibly fascinating! 😎🌬️

I think you now by now that we love every place and town we get to visit, because each one has a special character all its own. We absolutely adore the vast open spaces, fresh air and silence of the Karoo and will always return. If you like barren and bare, you would love Loeriesfontein. In the flower season which is from July to September, flowers adorn the fields though and it's spectacularly beautiful. We visited the shop to buy some dinner and the vibe we got from the people we happened upon in the shop and met at our place of accommodation, was very warm and welcoming, which would be important for any new resident to experience as well. You have a lot to consider! 😁🇿🇦
