S1 - Ep 144 - Merweville is a Beautiful Tiny Village in the Karoo!

- Day 1: We were so happy to turn off the very busy N1 after we left Touws River and the beautiful gravel road that greeted us was such a relief. This road was going to take us all the way to the tiny village of Merweville in the heart of the Karoo. This area is one of the most arid in the Karoo. The road was amazing, we saw incredible rock formations, springbok jumping around and even a scarecrow! Then we arrived in Merweville and headed directly to the church. I was able to hear the organ in action, climb to the top of the church tower and look over the town and then we had to rush to reach Letterkop, a hill overlooking the town to have a sundowner. That mission came with a few challenges, but all worked out brilliantly in the end!! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #merweville #karoo #westerncape

Beautiful well kept church. Loved the accommodation gives you the real feel of the old days farming esp with the lanterns. Amazing sunset and so romantic ❤

Wow what an episode, what a priceless experience for you to be able to have a full view of the inner workings of that church. It was bittersweet to see you staying at Cindy's Oasis as thats where we stayed, she had invited us to spend a few days with her. We stayed in the smaller cottage with the blue framed windows, the red piano (with an interesting story) was in that cottage. I can still picture her making food for us in the kitchen. Samson and her dog "Buster" were there too.
How amazing that you got to meet the matriarch herself. 😍 Her picture and story were displayed in Oasis and we found it absolutely fascinating. Little did we know we will happen upon this incredible gem of a place in Merweville. I'm still in awe when I think back to my experience at the church, it was incredible to see the inner workings of the clock and to climb up to the church tower, certainly two very memorable firsts for me. ⛪
We also stayed there and were friends with Cindy. She passed away about 2 years ago

This is so much like Arizona and Nevada, but not like the South were I live. Hot, humid the year round with lots of snakes and alligators. I live in the swamps of Louisiana, deep in the forest. Thanks for another great video, Greg Adams, Springfield, Louisiana, USA

@@DustBugsTravel I wanted to drive there from Sutherland once but then they told me there are about 20 farmgates to open and as I drive alone I did not do it then. But there is still a next time.

@@DustBugsTravel originally from Cape Town ……thirty odd years ago…… Canada is home …… the Karoo has a very serene presence to it….. very quiet…… we were off the beaten track in March / April this year….. drove through the farmlands via a skeleton place called Letjiesbos across the Gamka river….. Beaufort West area….. the fauna / vegetation after recent rain…. lots of water in the river…. was in bloom…. that semi desert aka… Karoo is spectacular…. Safe travels…..👍👍👍
I enjoy our drives out in the country, I like sitting on the back seat hearing and snoozing as you chat to each other lol . Have never been to South Africa, it looks so big and wide🤠 in comparison to here in the UK .🤠

We weren't going to let anything stop us from seeing that gorgeous sunset! 🌄 We loved our accommodation, it was so cozy although we had loadshedding. We had such a good night's rest that we completely oversnoozed the next morning. 😵😵

We just had to experience the sunset from atop Letterkop, it was a memorable experience, albeit a little later than we had planned. The colours were truly spectacular. 🌄🍾🥂
Last year we were in Merweville and stayed at Springbok Lodge for one night... but eventually stayed two nights...we took photos of the beautiful church... thanks again for the video 😍👍
I understand completely why you extended your stay and decided to stay another night, we might've done the same if we weren't booked someplace else for the next evening. The church is truly spectacular and so incredibly well-maintained. It sounds like you had a fantastic time in Merweville too! 🤩
Love to see the springbuck pronking. Never been to Merweville. Its so beautiful. Love the church and the bell and the orrel. Nothing more special than a glass of bubbly at sunset.

Yes it is a lovely town, I grew up there... I love the Karoo....and this little town has such lovely old houses... but even if you can drive out to where the Kalkdam is, where the water for the town comes from....it such a beautiful drive through the hills...
We loved the town! 😍 It must've been a treat growing up there. We'll certainly remember Kalkdam for next time we visit Merweville, we didn't make it there this time around.

Thank you for the suggestion. Churches are just one of the things we enjoy in a town or place we visit, so our records aren't complete at all. We live them for their incredible architecture! 🚙💒

Indeed! And upon our arrival in town, we still thought it was based on partially true events. But we quickly learnt that it was all fiction. 😁📚
