    Here are some tips:
    Despite looking and sounding similar, the letters Č and Ć actually have nothing to do with one another. In native words, wherever there is Č, there will usually be a related word that has a K or C (ručni - ruka, učiti - nauka, pričati - prikaz), and wherever there's Ć, there will be a related form of the word with T (braća - brat, maćeha - mati), for suffixes there is no help, you have to learn them.
    The glyph Ć is really unfortunate. It was borrowed from polish orthography where it makes more sense. If there is one thing I'd change about Croatian, I'd change the letter Ć to something like Ť or Ŧ.
    For DŽ and Đ it's the same story, they have nothing to do with one another. Đ comes from D, so there will usually be a related word with D. DŽ, on the other hand is not a native Croatian phoneme, so almost all words with it are loanwords. It can only sometimes appear because of voicing assimilation (like in "udžbenik" or "promidžba"). (Fun fact, the letter F is also not native to Croatian, so almost all words with it are loanwords)
    For loanwords, depending on the language they're from they usually contain only one of each pair:
    for English loans it's always Č and DŽ,
    for Italian loans it's always Ć and Đ,
    for Turkish loans it's usually Ć and DŽ,
    for Hungarian loans it's usually Č and Đ.
    As for verbs with prefixes, they are equivalent to English phrasal verbs. Think of the difference between "to throw" and "to throw up".

    • @kaewakoyangi8071
      @kaewakoyangi8071 3 года назад +1

      "Ć" should actually be written "tj", as in Swedish, and đ as "gj" like they do in Albanian ("gy" in Hungarian). Of course ť and ď would also do, but this is not Slovakia.

You understand problems of grammar very well and it must have been a hell lot of efforts from your side to conquer our difficult rules of speech. Congrats on that, honestly! It is felt in your videos that you have tremendous will and determination to present our country and folks in the best way and you are making this very well. There is no doubt at all that you have invested enormous energy and time, but we see in your example that there is strong love standing behind it as well. i'd like to give a little tip on the Đ/Dž ordeal -- they're usually the same sound in colloquial speech. their main purpose is to distinguish foreign words from native ones. for example: grožđe (grapes) and hrđa (rust) are native croatian words; nindža (ninja) and džem (jam) aren't. my recommendation is to pronounce it all like you would J in english.
    also, in most spoken language dialects, Ć and Č are the same sound too due to a merger. in standard speech, however, they tend to represent how the word was made: Ć is T+J, while Č is K+J, but sometimes it really just is how it is. it's pretty hard to know why and how unless you get into the detailed linguistics of it (your children will in school so you might even learn something alongside them) and/or learn word by word as written, but if you never do just don't worry and simply pronounce them both the same way, as most of us do, and turn on autocorrect for spelling correction, again, as most of us do. :')
    another thing: pronouns and word order are very useful for emphasis. this is something you'll eventually pick up intuitively, word order wise, but: baka mi radi pitu. / baka *meni* radi pitu. = grandma is baking me a pie. / grandma is baking *me specifically* a pie. if you want to emphasize the person, use the prolonged pronoun.
    hope this helps a tad bit. you're doing extremely well for an english speaker and i wish you equally great progress onwards. sretno ti bilo :)

    What an inspiring video! I can't explain how maddening - but also rewarding - it is to learn Croatian. I am a son of Croatian immigrants and was surrounded by the language growing up. But as I got older, I quickly became rusty and found myself tongue-tied in conversation. Because my folks now live in Croatia and I visit often, I became motivated to improve. What a journey. I have repeatedly taken three different home instruction courses. After much trial and error, I have finally progressed so that I am more confident in conversation and can read and write some. You are right. As intimidating as Croatian can be, it is also a beautiful language. When you first began speaking, I assumed you were a native speaker. Learning Croatian has also motivated me to learn more languages. While I can't speak to the difficulty level of other languages, I have feeling that if I can decipher Croatian then others may not be as hard. Fewer cases I hope!

    • @RoyalCroatianTours
      @RoyalCroatianTours  4 года назад +4

      Yes, I still get frustrated by it! lol but I do love learning the language. That's great that you're able to visit often and put your hard work to practice. I definitely underestimated how long it would take me to learn. I figured I'd be fluent enough in about a year - ha ha ha ha ha. But slowly, day by day, I improved. Here I am, almost 9 years later. I haven't been able to put much work into improving over the last 5 years as I have 3 small kids (5, 3, 1), but I'm hoping to find the time to take a class to improve my grammar situation, sometime over the next year or so ;)
      I think you're right... if you can get through Croatian, other languages might come more easily (I think and hope :).

I was very disappointed by the scarcity of online resources, especially from big and popular apps like Duolingo, so I'm putting together my own "textbook" from RUclips and other media. As other people already pointed out, your Croatian is very fluent and sounds very clear and understandable, and English subtitles make it almost immediate :)))

      @ch2507d 3 года назад +1

      From Russian as a base you can understand a large part of any Slavic language (some will not agree,but russian is the base for all slavic languages.) The trick is to use some archaic expressions or similar words that on occasion have opposite meaning,but still you can get the point. I.e. dažd in russian is rain, in north croatia dežđ is also rain. That is why I had no problem learning russian and slovak and understanding any other slavic language.

    • @JohnDoe-jk9qn
      @JohnDoe-jk9qn 2 года назад +1

      If you know Russian then it is easier to catch Croatian and understand it. Reason? Because of all Slavic languages, Croatian and Serbian are the closest to an old Slavic /old church Slavonic language. Many our Slavic cousins moved forward and developed their language while still (not that often, use old words), and that is why for example Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, etc can understand us much better than we can understand them...

      Any kajkavians especially or some chakavians too, because their native tongue doesnt have č and ć just č )(in kajkavian)
      Thats bacause when the western south slavic languages split heres how it went;
      First shtokavian split from the chakavo-kajkavo-slovene branch (Ill call it CKS)
      Next, the CKS branch split into
      Chakavian and Kajkavo-Slovene
      In the end, Slovene and Kajkavian split from each other
      So all the shtokavian speeches and of course all the standard languages in the Western Balkans are one branch, and Chakavian,Kajkavian, Slovene are another
      Croatian is not one language technically, its made up of 3 different ones.

After we came back from my first ever (My wife and son's were there in 2011 without me due to work) tour of Europe as a supporting parent of the Milwaukee Croatian Junior Tamburitzans, I decided that I needed to learn the language. I attended monday night language classes at St. Augustine church in Milwaukee for 3 years and it was one of the most rewarding yet frustrating things I have done. I had a fantastic teacher and a fun group to learn with. Wow is all I can say, and not even in Croatian. here's a lifehack for sounding more like the natives in whichever language you want to learn: music, rap specifically but should work with other genres as well
    basically if you like the music, some songs get stuck in your head and you naturally adopt the 'more natural' sound over time, hope it helps :D

    I am just soooooo envious of you speaking every time I watch a video! My husband is born bred Croatian but we live in CA we go there to his home every year for couple month. I have an app, I practice, idk why it doesn’t stick considering I speaking fluent Italian and Spanish and I’m a teacher , why can’t I get Croatian to just stick!!! I find that toward the end of our stay it really starts sticking where I can get the jist of conversations and speak basic needs but dang I want so bad to speak fluently ! , I suppose I need to ‘live there’ and immerse cuz the longer I stay, I’ve seen, the more I understand n speak. But it IS a hard language for me to retain!

      @@kar460 it’s good for learning lots of basic words but not for conversation. It does help me though, like I am able to understand and say basic things and I get the jist of what people are talking about because I know many words and small phrases. Nothing better however than immersing oneself within the culture for long periods of time… that is what really helps me.
