    During this presentation, we will take a 1st person look at what the vehicle is all about beginning with the start up, performance data, fuel economy, the occasional track data, and build quality. Also, I will teach you how to use most of the interior and exterior features in a detailed fashion, that before, you could only get from going to a dealership yourself! Throughout the video, I will highlight key styling and unique differences about the vehicle, any available options, and of course it would not be an enthusiast car video without the good ole engine portion with rev and exhaust note with interior and exterior perspectives. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

    One of the greatest cars ever built and completely underrated.
    all 80s 90s Porsches have that satisfying kachunk of the doors. The new cars sadly don't.

    It's like a breath of fresh air to see a classic car review on this channel in such a long time. Please keep these up as this is main reason I first subscribed to this channel back in 2011. Although I understand that you need to review the brand new models to keep everybody happy, it's nice to have variety with these vintage classics mixed in as well.

      I always kinda figured them to be a little like a euro version of an American car that's rwd and v8(camaro , mustang etc)

      I don't think they have a US equivalent. The US doesn't really make full GT cars on the same level that this car was at the time it was made. A modern car that's pretty similar is a Maserati Grantourismo. A pure grand tourer.

    • @Sedan57Chevy
      @Sedan57Chevy 7 лет назад

      Charles Earle
      It depends on your definition of GT. If you're going for the 'relatively quick, somewhat sporty, and comfortable', you do have a few GT-ish American cars, like the first generation Buick Riviera, which handled well for the time, was quite quick, while also being prestigious and a bit on the expensive side. And, although front wheel drive, the final generation Cadillac Eldorado, as well as the rear wheel drive '88-'92 Lincoln Mark VII and the '93-'98 Mark VIII could be considered entry-level GT cars, the Mark VII especially, as it had like 280 horsepower from a 4.6 V8, rear wheel drive, and was quite comfortable and modern for the 90s (especially compared to other American cars of the time).
      If anything, I'd say muscle cars are sort of the US-version of the GT-concept, although performance in a straight line is more important than outright handling. They're also a lot cheaper, but also don't offer the same level of prestige or fancy equipment or nice interiors.

    • @charlesearle8414
      @charlesearle8414 7 лет назад +2

      Sedan57Chevy You have a good point. To me, GT implies luxury. Muscle cars are comfy and fast, but ultimately unrefined. Of course the US has made some good GT cars, but none were really quite so good at it as the 928 was when it was made. The GT cars out of the US today are nothing to scoff at, they're really nice cars.

    Thanks Kyle... brings back memories of the MY 1982 I owned last few years. I was forced to sell her due to financial issues in my life at the time (the car was a money pit)..my what a ride she had even for a 1982 model. So sophisticated.... flat out comfortable and reassuring. So many quirks in the electrical......I sorted all that out and magically she needed some love...everything worked ...Power everything to include sunroof on mine!!I miss that car. The early models were handicapped with the L-Jet fuel injection. Parts hard to find.

    My dad has a 1989 928 S4 with the rare "Coral Metallic" exterior paint and "Red-brown" leather interior (I think that's what they called it- Porshe had 2 brown interior choices and ours is the less common color) with the 5.0L 32V V8 engine. Ours is a rare/uncommon color combo that actually looks sharp and what a beast this car is on the road..... And it sounds soooo sweet revving it. :D Plenty of power. Gorgeous car that not many people remember because the 911 gets all the fame and glory, and the 928 gets left in the dust..... I had no idea the 928 was $120K+ dollars in today's money! :-0 Good thing we bought ours used in 2003.....Great review, Kyle!

      No way. here in Australia where the cars are dear the 928 sells for 14k to about 70 for a GT. MAYBE a GTS might go for more but doubtful.

    • @Rottensteam
      @Rottensteam 8 лет назад

      Really? How? It resembles the 924 and 944 way too much to be considered unique imo.

    • @pvogel
      @pvogel 8 лет назад

      +Rottensteam Very very true. My first thought was that the body lines resemble the 944 quite a bit.

    • @Th3SlipKnoT
      @Th3SlipKnoT 8 лет назад +1

      The pop up headlight of the 928 make him unique, and the reard end. Maybe the 924 and the 944 have the same lines and shape, but they're not near the 928.

    • @pvogel
      @pvogel 8 лет назад

      Ver similar, the only point you've made of the cars uniqueness are the headlights.

    • @Th3SlipKnoT
      @Th3SlipKnoT 8 лет назад

      all the rear end is different from the 924/944. Well, and the front bumper too. Also, the 928 has a more round shape on his side view, while the 924/944 are like squares.

    Wow! A wonderful review of an amazing car! This was Porsches first go at a clean sheet design and as they usually do, they knocked it out the park. Never mind it's short sighted critics, the fact that this design survived through the 70s, 80s, and well into the 90s with simple updates and power increases speaks for itself. It's ability to handle all of those increases in power and displacement is also a testament to the advanced engineering that went into creating the original version. Pictures rarely do these cars justice, but when you see one on the road your jaw is likely to drop! Also, if you look at the design and the specs of the 911 currently, you will see that it is steadily morphing into a revised 928! Porsche returning to its original in-house design! Gotta love it. 😜

  • @MonroeHandyMan

    It took me owning this car to realize why the 911 is a much better car. The 928 was my dream car...until I bought one. It looks cool as hell, but that's about it. I can honestly tell you this is one of the most fire prone cars ever made. That's why you don't see them on the road. Even in the 90's, when me and my friends would go to rebuildable car yards to see what they had, there were always 928's in those yards burnt to a crisp. The rubber fuel lines in the engine bay rub under vibration and get frail and cause fires. The engine bay on this car gets super hot, you wouldn't believe it until you open the hood of one of these cars. The computers are known for failing and when they do, they are notorious for dumping too much fuel into the cats and cause fires that way too. This happened to me, but luckily I had a hose right next to the car and put the fire out within seconds with minimal damage and was able to repair the wires it had fried behind the radio area. I was warned by my insurance carrier to be careful with this car as it has a history of being fire prone and the premiums were higher because of this and of course for being a Porsche.
    The car is unnecessarily over complicated. The fuse panel on the car looks like something out of a space ship, The fuse panel is is about nearly 2' feet long with multiple fuses and relays with so many things going wrong at any given time. I joined a Porsche forum when I owned this car and while the 911 guys were driving their cars, the 928 guys were always busy fixing them and that's a fact. The parts are an absolute ripoff and these guys will hose you for anything they can because unlike the 911, the parts are rare and limited with little aftermarket options available making the car limited in regards to performance upgrades. There were hundreds of thousands of posts on the 928 forums for tech help fixing issues, with less then 30,000 911 posts. I remember that. The 928 was also very disappointing on the street. Its a dog, to be honest. The car is so heavy and has such tall gears, it has unimpressive takeoff power. The car wakes up on the highway for sure, but you will pay dearly for that highway acceleration in parts and countless hours of fixing this car if you can keep it from going up in flames. If you want a good, reliable, used Porsche and can afford a 911, go that route, you will be glad you did.

      Get custom fuel lines and the fire problem is fixed. I have several 928's and they have all been very reliable and a blast to drive. It's a different animal from the 911 but that's what's makes it different. Both cars have minor issues but with proper maintenance and enough cash they both offer a neck breaking hell of a ride.

    • @davidcontini7217
      @davidcontini7217 2 года назад

      I have owned a 928S4 and two 928 GTSs. I have never heard of a 928 catching fire.
      I used to travel across Europe in my cars and I must say that they were extraordinary pieces of machinery.
      The alternatives for high speed touring were the BMW 850, the Mercedes 560 SEC and then the 500SL and 600SL, cars I am familiar with.
      Of course, you cannot neglect a 928 and must have it serviced regularly from a specialized Porsche dealer. And this can be very expensive; but there is no short cut if you want to own and drive this kind of car.
      The 928, if driven hard, goes through its rear tires like butter. The brake pads and discs wear rapidly and must be replaced with original parts. The timing belt, water pump, steering rack, all need to be taken care of and replaced when necessary. Even the front windshield needs replacement after 100.000 km of high speed driving, because of the scratches.
      Ball joints, bearings, torque tube need to be checked periodically. And never forget to check the dipstick on a 928!
      You have probably never driven a well maintained, manual 928GTS and compared it to a contemporary 911/964, or other sports cars of the era (Lamborghini Diablo or Ferrari Testarossa, just to mention a few). It can drive circles around them.
      The brakes are still exceptional based on today's standards, the steering is so precise that you can actually notice if the front tires are overheating, because the car understeers slightly. And the handling was always predictable, because of the 50/50 weight distribution and the rear Weissach axle.

    One of my all-time favourite cars; thank you for this detailed run-down. There are two important further points worth noting. First, the 928 was voted 1977 European Car of the Year, the only sports car ever to have won this accolade. Second - and key reasons why it won that vote - it was the first production car to be fitted with body-contoured and body-coloured bumpers, also the first production car with (passive) four-wheel steering.

    I've loved GT sports cars ever since owning a gold 1979 928 in the late 90's. In three years I put 30000 miles on mine and spent about $5000 in maintenance. Maintenance was costly because often even small jobs required full removal of the engine!! The car was fun to drive and it was difficult to keep it under 100 mph on the freeway which lead to 4 speeding tickets and a 6 month suspension of my license. I then sold it in excellent condition for about what I paid for it. $10k.

    Kind of nice driving something without a glowing touchscreen in the middle of the dash! There is beauty in simplicity.

    They were still making these in 1994?! I had no idea. I love the tail on these cars. Saw an 80s example at the local shopping center recently.

    Great video as always, Kyle, I do have a question though. While you were giving the engine specs, you mentioned that the engine had "eight main bearings, up from six". V8 engines have had only five main bearings and four throws to which the eight connecting rods were attached. Can you offer a bit of clarification, please? Thanks, and keep up the good work.

      Thanks! That's just based on the research I read. I'm not sure if it was a porsche specific design or not, but I saw that a number of times.

    My 1986 with 180 k miles does 0-60 in 5.7 sec. because it has 5.0 32 valve with a manual transmission and it's about 300 lbs lighter than a GTS, top speed is slower around 155 mph. I can fit my 10 speed bike in it. Gets 15 mpg city and 22mpg hwy.
