Vintage Swimsuit from a Dress Pattern: Part 1

- In preparation for the 2024 Peg City Pin-up Pageant I’m making a 1950s bathing suit! I’m up sewing creek without a pattern (yikes, that one didn’t make the final cut for this video, but had to share). I’m super excited to take part in my first ever Pin up pageant and of course I’m sewing as many of my vintage-inspired items as I can. This bathing suit is made from non-stretch fabric (send thoughts and prayers) from a 1956 Miriam Martin, mail order dress pattern because, why make things easy for myself?
Stay tuned for Part 2 coming soon! I’ll show you how I constructed the real deal, and what it looks like on the runway at the Peg City Pin-up Pageant!

As far as I'm concerned this is how bathers should be! So chic!
I think so too!
I'm so relieved to hear someone else say: "I don't know what I'm doooing!" I say it multiple times each time I sew. :P Suppose, I actually don't know what I'm doing most of the time. That bathing suit looks amazing!
Hahaha no way! Sewing is all problem solving, so not knowing what you’re doing is part of the fun! (And makes the finished product so rewarding, it proves that little doubting voice wrong!) you’ve got this!!
Oh my gosh it looks so CUTE!!!
Thank you! Stay tuned for the real deal! 🤗
that tablecloth dress is beautiful.
Thanks so much! I wear it a lot!
I look forward to seeing your finished swimsuit. What a great idea to use a dress pattern- I would have never thought of doing that and I have been searching for a vintage or vintage inspired pattern for a swimsuit. Also, I love the dress you’re wearing!
Thanks so much for watching! I often find myself up sewing creek without a pattern but there’s always a way to improvise!
aw thank you! Now you can take any dress pattern you like and make the swimsuit of your dreams! PS. Part two is coming out tomorrow! ;)

Amazing. Waaaay to advanced for me so I salute you! Sewing is such an adventure ❤
It sure is! But I’m sure you can do it too, just make lots of mock ups and lots of mistakes. That’s the path to making something great!
Super cute!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you! 😊
I grew up in Winnipeg!

Thanks for watching! Part 2 is coming soon!
Wow, This is super helpful watching you work through this pattern. I love that you include all this in your videos. BEAUTIFUL SWIMSUIT!
Thanks so much for watching! I’m glad it’s helpful!
Loving your videos and content, your attitude is so positive and happy!! Could you do a video on the dress you're currently wearing? Have you used a specific pattern?
Thanks so much for watching! The dress that I’m wearing in the intro was a table cloth from the thrift store and I used Butterick pattern 6556. If you’d like to see how I made it, check out my Instagram highlights @twirlintime 🤗
I snorted with amusement at your comment about sewist working in their underwear to facilitate quicker fittings. I have a dressing gown (robe) hanging on the back of my sewing room door for that exact reason! I also often wear (seasonal) nightgowns during day-time sewing because the a comfy and easy to pull on and off again.
Haha I love that idea! (I cut out the part where I said “myself included” because I didn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea!) 😂 thanks for watching!!
I love your tablecloth dress!!! I was born in 1956. ❤ Can't wait to see part 2, and Pageant footage!!
Oh my gosh no way! Thanks so much for watching! I’ll edit part two so you can see how it all turned out 🎉
Heckin’ cute!!!!! This keeps me from having to buy a swimsuit pattern. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ keep up the good work!
Aw yay! I’m glad my video was helpful! Good luck making your own version!
💖💖💖
You did a fabulous job.
Thank you!
Looks so nice! Great job!
Thank you!!
roflmao "I'm all about confusing historians" Best line I've heard this year yet lol
My favorite material for mock-ups are old bedsheets, which you can usually source at the thrift store for pennies on the dollar.
And every time I hear someone say they should've read the instructions, I'm reminded of an old Dennis The Menace cartoon where he's standing in front of his father holding a broken toy going "But Dad, I READ the destructions!"
Don't worry, we've all sewed something in backwards, upside down, and/or both lol I did that about half a dozen times with the cups on the first couple bras I made my wife back when I was re-learning how to sew (talk about jumping off the deep end, eh? I had little choice when she walked in one day, ripped her bra off, balled it up, hurled it at the garbage can, bouncing it off the rim, the buffet, the wall, the dog and a passing child and landing it back in the garbage can, yelling "I HATE THIS THING!!!", to which my response was "Hello, RUclips Polytechnic? I'd like to enroll in your lingerie construction courses, please"). I was beginning to think I was gonna have to go back and retake all my algebra and trigonometry if I didn't figure out what I was doing wrong in a hurry lol
But it all worked out eventually (I'm thinking starting off with the burrito method wasn't the best choice for a newbie), and now that she's back at a stable size again (post-surgery hormone issues, sadly), I can start making her some more again, and maybe even a dress or two (if she can find a pattern she likes, that is, or else I'm gonna have to kit-bash several patterns into one somehow, and the conversation for that particular endeavor usually goes something like this: Her: "Honey, what do you think of these trumpet sleeves with that bodice?" Me: "Trumpet sleeves? You stiffen that one end, and John Phillip Sousa's gonna crawl outta his grave to start playing 'Hail The Conquering Hero' with 'em!" Her: "But they look so cute like that!" Me: "Cute??? CUTE???!!! You start waving at someone with sleeves like that and Environment Canada's gonna be issuing a tornado warning in about five minutes!! Those things are so big we're gonna have to mortgage one of the children to get enough material to make 'em!!" Her: "But they're so cute I'm just gonna die without them!!!" Me: "You're gonna die WITH them if you walk outside on a windy day. Chances are a strong breeze would pick you up and carry you through the air and drop you on the other side of the Red!! Catch a good breeze on this side of Lake Manitoba, and you could hydroplane across the lake all the way to your folks' place! All you'd have to do is tie your shoe laces to the bottom of the bell on those sleeves and wear a set of water skis!" (Ok, ok, maybe not THAT dramatic, but you get the point lol)).
Geez, I need a vacation. I'm starting to sound like Statler & Waldorf and Patrick F. MacManus again lol
All that being said, I do like that pattern and the modifications you made to it. That should make a great bathing suit, and if you really wanted to top off the outfit, a kerchief made out of the same material would likely crown it right off. (It'd look even better behind the wheel of a '56 Corvette convertible, but they might object to the use of a vehicle on the runway lol though it'd be quite the sight at the local show n shine at Pony Corral, if it's still around, that is)
Okay can I just say that the fabric you used for the mock up was so stinking cute on you? Because it was, I personally really loved the color and print. It’s a shame you had to cut the skirt to get the fit right for the bottom of the swimsuit because that would have made such a cute summer dress! I am starting to get into vintage sewing myself and am starting to see that mock ups are going to be my best friend as just because the pattern says it’s one size doesn’t mean it will fit the size is claims to be.
Thank you! I started to get rather attached to the mock up too! Luckily I have leftover fabric and could make something else with it. And absolutely, mock ups are a must!
