As part of the #rocklerplywoodchallenge I'm making this plywood and resin bowl. I combine broken plywood, colored resin and a lathe to make a bowl that's never existed before. - Хобби
Very imaginative. You took a wood and resine product and added more resin. Makes perfect sense. I don’t turn but admire those who do. Keep up the humorous banter!
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
“It’s awesome and makes me look like a badass!” Lol I subscribed immediately after that phrase! Beautiful
I grew up on a farm. An electric harbor freight chainsaw would have been just the opposite :-)
Wow! I’m speechless! Had I seen this bowl in an art exception, I would have cried and wanted it so badly. It is beyond beautiful! You are extremely talented!
I watched this video a year ago, and still think it’s one of the most unique and beautiful bowls I’ve seen.
Wow... That is fantastic! Clever design and beautiful result. Nice job, sir! 👍🏼
You get a thumbs up for telling people not to take a rag near a lathe... Great advice, horrible visions lol
This woodworking book is really detailed, t.co/oLg9l5gL3F ! With the aid of this plan, I was able to use words, drawings, real images and different diagrams. It is really an informative product. I am presently making furniture together with my brother and thanks to this product, I feel like helping him is possible.?
For the uncultured, what's wrong with using a rag?
@@cashewbaby3163 Paper towel will just tear. If the rag catches on anything while you're holding it, it can pull your hand/arm into something that's spinning VERY fast and with a lot of torque. Lathes are very dangerous.
He was wearing gloves during a bit of the turning and it was making me nervous
It's a spinning piece of metal tied to an engine. Don't bring any fabric, loose clothing, loose hair, or anything else that could snag on it anywhere near spinning pieces of metal tied to engines.
I wasn't really a fan of the resin filled table tops that are quite popular now, but this bowl really sells the technique. I think its the shattered ply that makes it pop. Very nice work, Rex
Thanks! I think a lot of people feel like the river table is played-out. I just wanted to offer a twist on it.
So.. the river table has run its course? sorry couldn't resist ;)
I agree with Keith, it's the very fine, sort of feathered edge from the broken plywood that elevates this design. That and the clarity and sheen of the resin.
I agree about the river tables. They look odd to me and often remind me of the pattern on cows.
Ian Ide Don’t “bank” on it. BWAAAHAHAHA
I love the rings that come from this type of technique too. They look really dramatic and sometimes very gloomy depending on what colors are used.
Fantastic video! I love that reserved broken wood and slow color change.
Harbor freight - helping the rest of us afford to be awesome at home. WOW. Really awesome bowl. The broken edge is amazing!
That should really be their motto! Lots of their stuff is crap, but that lathe and chainsaw and affordable gems.
Officially the coolest damn woodturning video I've ever seen. And it's not even actual wood. Wow.
Thanks very much!
Quite unexpected results, actually quite beautiful and I love it. Thanks for sharing. 😁
That was beautiful. Very relaxing to watch you work. Thanks for sharing!
It always amazes me when someone does something different than I would do. I love the bowl and the idea is great. We turn bowls differently, but your results prove that there is no one right way, there are as many right ways as there are artists. Beautiful job.
That's SUCH a nice way of respecting other approaches. I wish WAY more comments were like this!
Rex, I am so glad I have found your channel. You bring me a ton of inspiration to pursue woodworking as a hobby and maybe down the line to do even more with it. I genuinely appreciate your time with making these videos and I will be watching as many as I can from here on out.
That breaking the ply technique really did work out well. It left a great finish.
7:03 "Because it's awesome, and it makes me look like a badass" Your skill Sir, makes you REALLY a badass.....
I had to save this to come back to watch, so glad I did. Love the jagged edge look of the broken plywood through the semi-transparent epoxy. Lots of great tips and ideas.
Thanks! All those details were hard to work out, and I didn't know if I'd pull it off, but I'm glad I pushed through.
Honestly. . . . this turned out pretty damned good. Great Job and glad you thought this up. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.
First resin implementing I like, what derives from the really roughly ruined ply as an opposite.
Really beautiful work. I’m definitely trying this one
Smooth, opaque, clear, rough, splintery, shiny, stripy, cool and warm colours, original and added bonus of being very useable... what's not to love? Well done, standing golf clap from me. :)
Very kind! Thanks!
That is a beautiful bull Rex and additionally it is your usual excellent job of explaining your reasoning as you went step-by-step instead of just showing us the tools and doing your thing that helps a lot and we appreciate it
It really is a work off art..it's so beautiful and congrats on using your skill but mostly your imagination..a thrill to watch u work n a pleasure to be apart of you art..
Wouldn't have thought it, but that really 'turned' out quite nicely. Great job Rex.
Ha! Thanks.
You really ‘spun’ me out with that comment
pun pun pun pun
Wooden't have??
Great work. Dude you're funny as hell. Lol don't ever change your style.
Thanks! I try to have a little fun.
Who would have thought plywood would look so beautiful. Nicely done.
Absolutely amazing, bro! You have inspired me to come up with some wicked ideas! I don't have a lathe machine, nor am I trying to make bowls; Your technique was crazy badass! 🙌
Gorgeous piece, man, great job.
Love it, wish I had your patience on the lathe. I usually go to the large after a long furniture project for a quick satisfying build. Maybe one day I’ll take it more seriously. Love the design.
How amazing! I just have to try something like this now - love the resin effect!
Awesome work Rex. That's impressive!!!
That is a fantastic bowl! Good job!
Thanks very much!
My favorite bowl I’ve seen on RUclips. Amazing!
That, from a plywood scraps bucket...amazing transformation.
That's cool! I was really curious as to how he made that design of the bowl when I saw it in the thumbnail, and that was pretty ingenious!
Rofl, you made me laugh out loud with their totally “stupid” contest! Haha, your bowl turned out beautiful! Great job!
Some very cool techniques on show here, but more importantly, that's a fabulous bowl, it looks stunning. Great work.
Thank you for being so descriptive with the choices you made
How the heck did you imagine that up ? That's so original and the plywood seems the perfect medium. I'm blown away !!
Honestly, I really was thinking about the MM challenge and how I could use it to make something that I actually wanted to make. This is just what I came up with. Thanks for watching!
Man that’s really cool. It looks like 2 tornadoes.
No it doesn't.
I love the creativity of this piece. Interesting use of materials and especially techniques.... not to mention the fantastic end result.
WOW, end product is amazing.
I gave you a thumbs-up just for the way you said BADASS!
This guy needs more subs.
Thanks for saying so!
I think this is the first Rex video I watched, and I watched it when it came out nearly 3 years ago. Since then the woodworking for humans series has me hooked.
Turned out beautifully!
Wow! Very beatiful!!! 😁👍👍👍
you had me at "I can't make a bowl out of plywood, no wait no I can totally do that lets do that" lol
About a ga-zillion years ago (when I was in High School), I spent a LOT of time in 'Wood Shop'. If I didn't have some major project in mind...I was at the lathe. My standard project was that I had told all of my friends to bring me their favorite coin and I would insert that into the top of a custom gearshift knob. I must have turned a hundred knobs. Walnut and Myrtle Wood (Bay Laurel) were my units of choice. Several of my friends had shown up with foreign coins (some of which weren't even round!) that I had never seen before. (This is back in the day when most of us still drove manual gearbox cars.) Do ya think I have a single example of those? Hell...I don't even have one of my OWN!
Time to get a lathe.... (And a manual transmission in my truck!)
6:47 You've got me rolling on the shop floor.🤣 If it works, then do it.
you should have saved all them cool noodle like shavings, then made another mold. resin and shavings. and turned a bowl from that. would look crazy awesome if the resin was just clear.
Or even bag it up and trade with someone who does concrete-ish counter tops.
A noble king would gladly eat cereal from this bowl
As would a noble hacker such as myself.
THAT'S A LOTTA CEREAL! But.. I'd eat that much cereal if I had the stomach to.
Better as a bowl to hold M&M's
Love this, it looks like a frozen point in time, as the pot explodes. The rough edges make it for me. The colourant texture of the resin reminds me of old wreck glass that you find a lot on the Cornish coastline. Really great
That is SO COOL! I had no idea that it would look that good when done. It was a lot of work, but the end result was well worth it.
“Why am I using a chainsaw?.... Because it’s awesome.” .... fair enough
" and make me look bad ass" 😂
Татармиро х7п я я приходит испаритель эфира и ржау.
Because I feel I haven't used it enough.
This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?
@@zoecarr4089 we can always get some tips and ideas from just about any book on practical skills.
Very cool. Thank you for not showing the breaking of every piece of plywood.
That looks really cool!!! Really interesting seeing how it was made!
Totally Excellent AND inspirational. Watching turning in general is very relaxing and provides reminiscent visions of my Grandfather’s BLUE RIBBON Oregon State Fair creations generations ago.! He created the bannisters and turnings at the State Capitol Building.

7:00 there is no better reason to do anything than this reason
"I get a great bottom that way" 🤣😂
Just beautiful! My first time watching and I will be back. Excellent work.
Great piece
I've got a stack of ply offcuts ready for new projects thanks to you , thanks for the motivation
You probably don't like your caulk gun because it's not the yellow and black dripless from Sherwin Williams. It's the only worth a damn.
Also out of all the 1 plywood projects I've seen I like this the best, and it's most creative.
That sounds like a pro-tip. I've got a SW just down the street. Maybe I'll pick up one of these magic guns. Thanks also for the compliment!
I recently renovated a house, first time I did it. I went through about 4 to 5 caulk guns, returning the ones I didn't like (which was all of them). Towards the end of the project I hired a couple painters and trim carpenters to help finish things up as I was in danger of missing the fall market. They all used the SW caulk guns and independently swore by them when I asked.
When I finally tried it they were right. So much better. But you also have to cut your tube tips by hand, at an angle, allowing only about a 1/8" hole. Worked so much better.
Pro painter here, I love that caulk gun.
I use the freebie fake AARP cards to spread glue ...
I use my credit cards that are maxed out..
That looks awesome! The glassy finish on the resin is brilliant, and the shattered ply just adds a great energy to the piece. Well done.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I didn't think about the shattered ply adding "energy", but that's a great way to describe it. Thanks!
Love the result! FAntastic piece!
I subscribed when he said "it's awesome, and it makes me look like a badass."
So there's a way to make plywood look nice after all. Good work!
Beautiful. Love the effect!
Absolutely Beautiful. Thank you for the video. Great job two thumbs way up👍🏽👍🏽
Gorgeous! Extremely creative idea, very well executed. Well done indeed... I've never come across 'shattered plywood' as a material to work with. Wow.
Yeah, I hadn't come across it either. If someone else had done it and explained what a pain in the ass it would be, I wouldn't have touched it! But it's fun to be first and comments like yours make it worthwhile.
It’s beautiful. You’re incredibly talented.
8:30 I have those work headphones too! 😀They block a lot of noise, are bluetooth and extremely comfortable. I highly recommend..
Discovered your channel a few weeks ago and its been the majority of my youtube experience since then. Really made me start wood working a lot more. Thanks for awesome videos!
Great work and love both the concise commentary as well as the humor. Subbed!
Great idea. Turned out beautiful.
Fantastic! Boy are you patient or what? I love it! Ingenious...especially for a corgi.
It's gorgeous. Great work.
This is truly beautiful, congratulations my friend.
Great idea, it looks fantastic.
That is VERY pretty!! I'd have never thought to turn plywood but that made one hell of a nice bowl..
That's very kind of you to say!
wow that is stunning!
Elegant product made from simple material. Great.
Beautiful!
The one random ass video I did not regret watching for a second. Looks spectacular
Great idea and breaking the ply was a brilliant touch.... Turned out great. I've fooled around with ply on the lathe, but the cross grain challenges in finishing deterred me. I'm rethinking my finish and will give it another whirl in the future. Thank you for the inspiration.
I'm glad you liked it. Finishing is really a matter of filling that grain. If you don't have epoxy, try putting on like a million coats of poly. Should do the same thing, just slower.
Absolutely stunning
I really didn't know what to think at first, but.... it came out amazingly cool. Nice job, Rex! As usual.
Outstanding idea. Beautiful result.
Brilliant job
Love the bowl
Magnificent work. Well done.
I dont even woodwork but knowing to never bring a rag to a lathe is great advice, that never wouldve crossed my mind
This is really a cool project. Great job!
It turned out really well thanks for sharing. Ron. UK
Well done. It's fabulous.
Your wit makes me laugh Rex, and that sure was a fun project to watch.
Thanks! I'm trying to throw in a laugh once in a while. This maker stuff can be a bit dry.
Pretty cool results and video Rex. Ive used the hell out of HF chainsaws for cutting wooden pallets and other items down. To maximize dumpster capacity also Dumpster remnants make good cheap bonfires or camping firewood plus it stores easier in a motorhomes. Storage areas and is cleaner than logs usually
The grocery store dye kept the color from overloading the wood. I am not a fan of blues & greens on works but this is very nice.
