I'm so glad you interviewed Adrian Tomine. He and Seth did a really interesting chat the other week when D&Q launched the book. I also enjoy hearing an artist on your channel who is relatively humble, he's like the Anti-Kayfabe in that he's not bigging himself up. Big up the Drawn And Quarterly crew!
I just discovered your RUclips channel and this is one of the best cartoonist interviews I've seen -- great job. I enjoyed the shout outs to Factsheet Five, the Xeric Grant (I'm a 1995 Xeric recipient), and small press zine publishing. I started out that way as well, printing my zines at copy shops, sending them to other cartoonists and zines, and selling them through the mail. I somehow missed this latest release by Adrian and have now ordered a copy!
Thank you for asking Adrian about his work in publishing and lettering Yoshihiro Tatsumi's comics. Both Tomine and Tatsumi were incredibly impactful on me as a younger cartoonist.
Excellent. And thank you for saying his name out loud! Every time he spelled out someone mispronouncing his name in the book, I was eagerly awaiting the phonetic spelling of the correct pronunciation, and when it didn't happen by the end of it I was ready to just never say his name out loud!
You guys have been killing with these shoot interviews recently :D Loved this book so much. If you're a creative of any sort (cartoonist, painter, musician...), you NEED to pick this up.
Thanks for this. I just blasted through his book...it's great! Funny and also very moving. The comics world is not much different from the nasty "real" world at times. Those who can do grind it out, those that can't accuse them of being derivative. Anyway keep up the great shows. Time to interview Julie Doucet and check out the other type of art she now produces. Or at least review the Plotte double volume. I know it's a lot of work but your show is the best!
This was such a great interview! Thank you both for helping make the vast world of comics a more inviting and accessible place. I would love to see an interview with Nick Drnaso, or John Porcellino in the future if you're ever able to!
His “scenes from an impending marriage” was so perfect and relatable and to this date is one of the few comics I’ve gotten my wife to read (she found and read it while we were getting married). Can’t wait to read the new book.
when talking about Tatsumi, it would be great to know what year/decade we are talking about ...it is surprising Tatsumi was not translated in English until later
That may have been my favorite interview on the channel so far. Such great chemistry and natural flow of conversation. So I've got a question for the community: I've only read Tomine's Scenes from an impending marriage. Which two books would you recommend as essential reading?
2:50 Nothing's changed. I took creative classes within the last 10 years to improve my craft and the idiots in academia do their best to not actually teach you how to write better. They assign books, they mandate writing assignments and it's obvious that there's no improvement among the people who don't have a talent for writing. Presumably, this is because the kind of people who teach creative writing aren't actually very good at writing because they're teaching and not professional writers.
My ultimate wishlist for shoot interviews: Grant Morrison, John Holmstrom, Raymond Pettibon, Dan Clowes, Simon Hanselmann & Karen Berger!
@@roymakescomics The "Talking with Gods" documentary is great!
Pushead!
Alan Moore!
Scenes from an Impending Marriage is a true story about my aunt and him getting together.
Excited to Adrian’s interview with y’all. Pride of Berkeley/Bay Area!!

This was fun- felt like I was eavesdropping a cartoonist conversation instead of just watching an interview. Great work to you all!
Great talk, glad to catch up with this one a year later. Adrian is a talent, but also a man with the focus and diligence to bring it all home.
His new book is amazing, this interview was amazing, as always, thanks again Jim and Ed!!

you and Frank Miller
Great interview. Continuing the run of great guest and wonderful conversation. Thanks guys, I thoroughly enjoyed.
Oh, right on time! Just read his book! ✨
Another superb interview, and another motivation to reread Tomine’s work. Thank you!

Man I was about to suggest Adrian Tomine esp with his new book out. Thanks for doing this one!

This was a great interview. Jim seemed so psyched to ask about process and printing.

Seeks like an amazing dude! Very cool, very nice! His art isnt really my sort of thing, but maybe I'll try one his books out at the library
Really enjoyed this shoot interview. Going to pick up this new book!
Adrian's entire Zoom aesthetics is a panel of one of his comics. Wild.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and going to buy the latest tomine book!

Per Paul Pope's mom there's definitely some boxes of things in her basement. Also, pro tip... don't bring your mom along with you to a book signing.

Lukas Bärwald I really enjoyed “Summer Blonde” and “Killing and Dying”.
@@cloudybeforerain7134 Thanks a lot, already ordered.
Love the interviews! Any chance you can do one with Steve Rude or Michael T. Gilbert?
Wait - he sold the original art for the cover of Optic Nerve 1 for $100?!??!?! 😲
what's the plant he has in the background?
Cool beans
This is my uncle!!!!!
When we getting Daniel Clowes dudes?

Sounds like it's required reading. :)
