Yesssss, finally! Was waiting for this one. What a beauty! Also found out this weirdo had a brother: Motorola TEXEL, aka ROKR E10. The phone should have been a music-oriented slab edition of Z12. Its functionality was probably on par with SonyEricsson W960.
Hard to tell with this being a proto it could have had an odd amount..the values also seem to be either stuck or reading wrong if thats the case as they never change when apps are opened or closed..there have been phones with strange amounts of ram as well, eg: the 2011 HTC ThunderBolt 4G with 768mb of ram
@@Techformative557 the RIZR Z8 and Z10 both featured 64MB RAM which was quite little even at the time as 128MB had become standard. Nokia N95-8GB, N82 and E90 had set this standard, while the standard N95 relied on 64MB and Demand Paging to mange the RAM.
Amazing, I remember being a big fan of the Z8 “banana phone” and Z10, these had the almighty TI OMAP 2420 chip which were amongst the first Mobile chips with full on GPUs at the time, same chip found in N93, N95, E90 and N82. The most probable reason these were canceled is because the iPhone had dropped in 2007, and also this ran Symbian UIQ, Symbian UIQ had lost favour amongst those in the Symabian Foundation in favour of Symbian S60. From Wikipedia: “UIQ Technology filed for bankruptcy in January 2009, which effectively ended the UIQ platform.” Motorola were also beginning to explore Android around this time to challenge Apple who were quickly becoming the darling of Mobile and shifting us into mostly touch based interface.
Ohhh makes sense..yeah the iPhone thing is probably a large contributing factor but hey one never knows..I always thought that the Sony Ericsson Paris was cancelled because of the UIQ issue too until I spoke to an Ex Sony Ericsson engineer who said it was AT&T cancelling the contract for the Paris in favor of a different Sony Ericsson phone..so since at&t would have been their main source of income on that phone, they cancelled it entirely
@@Techformative557 it’s crazy how carriers ran the game especially back then, such a shame, I was a huge UIQ fan, I nearly got the P1i but instead chose K850i due to it having HSDPA/3.5G connectivity, I dual phoned with a Nokia N81. That 2007-2010 era was just crazy 😂 so much going on, some manufacturers were caught with their pants down and unable to recover from that time. Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola were all scrambling to figure it out, while Samsung like a cool cat simply made phones that ran on all OSs and then doubled down on whatever stuck. I am still thoroughly impressed at how Samsung has transcended every era of mobile effortlessly. Even though I am now an Apple user, I still look back with amazement at ol’ Sammy. Great video by the way!
@@Tsepz I’m guessing Samsung were heavily subsidizing their smartphone devision, because even though they were one of the leaders among phone makers, it is hard to believe that they were profitable releasing that many different models, while other companies were failing.
Yeah I know but that was usually for ultra premium phones..anyways it's hard to say on this with only the menu, the menu looks very much like 256k but the only way to be sure is to load a color palate and compare..maybe someday i'll be able to. Its really hard to get anything done with this phone
@@Techformative557 Lots of factors to take into account: Motorola's 2007 was so messy that all Linux (MotoMAGX OS) were pushed back. This also made UIQ phones get to market really late in the game. ROKR E8, U9 were actually Q4 2007 releases (E8 was even featured on a Fergie video in December 2007, phone was announced in January 2008 and got released around June... a mess), Z10 got to market pretty late too. That leaked 2007 presentation was actually for the 2008 roadmap that was never released. Motorola ended up with no flagship that year, just a few unique/limited phones like AURA, or the ZINE ZN5 (I believe this is the candybar phone from that presentation). At the same time, investors were pushing to split Motorola in two (the damaging phone business, and the successful network/government business). This hit harder with the 2008 economic downturn. Around this time, new executives were announced and then fired every month. The Co-CEO hired in mid-2008 decided to move to Windows and Android, and the UIQ delays were so bad that they ended up scrapping every release. 2008-2009 until the DROID launched was a very quiet time for Moto. RAZR3 VE1 ended up being released in South Korea, at least, along other interesting devices like the ROKR ZN50, but the rest is history. Motorola's history is very intriguing.
What do you guys think of this phone?

interesting phone. I have a similar model, motorola e10, which also did not go into series and remained a prototype
@@Nighthawk11722 Ahh yes the Z12, E10 and Razr 3 were all cancelled at the same time...im looking for the E10 and Razr 3 as well

Don't forget the Razr 3..the E10, Razr 3 and Rizr Z12 were all cancelled at the same time..theres a photo of all 3 in there at 12:30
You are working very hard on your videos. Hope the channel will grow more👍🏻
29:45 the actual ram size is most likely 64mb (rest is used by OS) and the rom (knowing other Symbian phones) 64mb or 128mb

I fucking loved motorolas, I had the razr z6 black and orange
You mean the Rokr Z6? cool phone that ran a special Linux/Java OS called MotoMagX

23:12 The actual full resolution is probably 240x400, i can see that the display is definetly longer than a 240x320 one
Probably could be..I can tell better If I had the Z10 or E11 for comparison so maybe when I get those I will be able to confirm
I really need to know the seller or store you got this from! Been looking for these prototypes for years.
It was someone on offerup, can't remember exactly who it was. This was the only Z12 tho
22:20 16M color screens already exist before 2008, N95 had one too.

The reason Motorola had decided to scrap these phones was UIQ's bankruptcy 🙁
That or the fact that the iPhone's release changed plans entirely..cant say for sure tho

Thanks for the video. Where I can read your articles?
I didn't write any articles myself but if you search for Motorola Rizr Z12 online they will show up
you need to close the slider to access the rear camera
Tried that, doesn't work..it doesn't make sense to have a design aspect like that either
I thought it was a full touch phone, turned out it's just a virtual navigation keys in the bottom.
Nice! Any chance you could dump the firmware, or at least the ringtones?
Not currently as it turns off at random and doesn't connect to a pc using basic means..maybe someday when I return to messing with this phone
Ouch, understandable. I see you have a Kin though, maybe you could try dumping the FW of that?
Yeah I could but there's are copies already online..I got it recently and haven't messed with it much
I can't find the firmware anywhere though - any pointers? Mostly that I want to extract the preloaded content from it.
I saw it somewhere..If i do find it i'll post it here..I dunno how to do it for the kin tho..its definitely not easy as Android
i am a antique phone lover, plz do cover the video of rare nokia n87
I dont have one of those but I may someday when I get one for sure!
This Motorola look absolutely cool. But actually only phone Batman used in real life or movies was prototype of Nokia 5800. Bat Tube. 😎
Mine come with bc60 but I'm not sure it's the original one that comes with device
