Love him or hate him, there's no denying that Mac is highly intelligent, and he rarely, if ever, ducks questions. He's also a great commentator.

As a young tennis nerd of the 80's I was a Borg man and actively rooted against John. But he had so much amazing game and you knew he brought out the best in his rivals and was part of so many legendary matches. The on court antics were one thing but as a human being he has a depth and honesty that you cannot deny and a wonderful ability to communicate. His announcing is top notch as well - best in the business. Tennis as a whole greatly benefits from him

I still remember being 13 years at the US Open and seeing Mac walk through the grounds after he practiced. I told my dad I’m going to ask his for autograph. He said, I wouldn’t if I were you. I asked him why and he didn’t give me a reason. I asked Mac for an autograph and he said, “Kid, fuck off!” I never doubted my father again

I met a guy who worked for McEnroe at his tennis center. This is when Mac was about 55. The guy told me that top pros would stop by and sometimes he'd play a set with them. He'd rarely lose. The guy told me mac could handle just about anyone for one set. There's a video on youtube of him playing an exhibitiion with Kei Nishikori a few years ago and he beat Nishikori pretty easily. He played some serve-volley against him, McEnroe style, and Nishikori just couldn't handle it.
