Tom Chaplin, frontman for KEANE, sings "Closer Now". B-side to single, "Call Me What You Like", released February 2000.

Couldn't agree more. I love Keane and just about every song they've put out, from all three albums, and all their different B sides. Perfect Symmetry was different, but excellent. They've earned my total trust that if they put out something, anything, I want to hear it!

I have to say that "hopes and fears" and "Under the iron sea" are brilliant but now Keane changed thats why "Perfect Symmetry" it's so different, but I think that is a great album, different but great.

My Tommy, it's a bit far from Keane's sounding, but I can't stop loving your voice- that is so nice here, as usual!:)
wow! interesting to listen to this (original) version of the song🙂. But if I think of my first approach to this song (a 2020 I think, live version with Tom singing and playing guitar), I have to admit I prefer that one, cause you can clearly hear how Tom s voice got even better through the years, more subtle, more in control, especially now that he has been sober for quite a lot of time. I find it interesting that I m almost accidentally discovering things "on reverse": I actually began to pay attention to the band on January 18, this year, 2024; started with some new versions, to then discover the original ones, and that way i kind of perceive changes more cleary than if it had been progressively and the other way round.
I think they surprise me with every album, they'll always change, under the iron sea was very different from Hopes & Fears, and the last album is no exception ... you can be a Keane fan and prefer the first and last, like me ;-) ... taste, you cannot discuss ...

I was talking to Fabro8, by the way. And for those who might think so, I'd like to precise that 'nothing new' wasn't a criticism of the song: I like the music, the lyrics, instruments,the song.

Tom was asked the question a few months ago. He said he himself would like to know.Charlie Chaplin was indeed a great composer but Tom's musical gift is not due to some genetic factors as far as we know. He said it was due to practice and luck. You can find this information in the former site of Keane. there's some link to it in the present one, if you can find your way in this maze, time consuming but interesting. Hope I've answered your question. And what's that other side of the world ? Bye!

i really love this song, i heard it a couple of days ago and i cant get it out of my head. does anybody know where i can get it? i know that it was on a b-side, so its hard to find.

Well, it's about someone who might stumble and then come closer, and someone else who is left on his own, by the former person, to live the pattern of his life, er, lots of metaphors. In brief, it's about a relationships with ups and down, nothing new, except the lyrics. I hope it made sense...
They could have a great fourth CD by compiling a lot of the songs not on the first 3, A Heart To Hold You, The Night Sky, Closer Now, etc.
TIM is the one who writes the lyrics..... but I do think they all are geniuses.
Generally Tim does it, but not this, this one was written by Tom.
No, this is the official version :) This version starts with drums, the demo does not :)
