    Superb account of the event. The fact that this year's womens race winner was unconscious as she crossed the finish line gives an idea of the dedication to cheese rolling there was on display.

      Shame we have a Government trying to dismantle the NHS though. Give them another term in office and healthcare free at the point of use will be a distant memory.

      Oh, and one more point:, "we just don't make a payment when we need life saving medical intervention" we don't make a payment for pretty much everything else too, from broken fingers to gender reassignment surgery. I didn't mention such things in my original comment because, like I said, they were meant to be jokey.

      @@Sarge084 So if some has never worked in there life are they still entitled to healthcare? And I get your point and I probably had paid way more in over the years than I have cost the NHS even with my 3 surgeries, but at least at no point have I thought to myself how will I be able to afford this, witch to me is worth way more .

    • @Sarge084
      @Sarge084 Год назад

      @@callumcurtis15 Have you paid insurance on your car for years and not made a claim but someone else has made several claims?
      That's how insurance works!
      As for not making any payment, it depends who you are, if you're a foreigner you will have to pay, if you're a full time housewife and mother you obviously won't have paid NI but you'd still be entitled to healthcare free at the point of use.
      EU nationals with settled status living and working in the UK have NI contributions deducted at source and yet they still have to make an additional payment, now *that* doesn't seem fair does it!?

    During my teens I lived in Cheltenham, and we had friends in Brockworth (on the outskirts of Gloucester). Once from their garden I viewed the Cheese-rolling through binoculars.
    I was pleased to see that this year the race was held on Whit Monday, as it should be. In years gone past the movable feast of Pentecost was called Whitsunday, and this race was traditionally held the day after.
    The authorities keep trying to stop this, but how do you stop a tradition at least 200 years old? I'm not sure what the authorities are most worried about, the safety of the participants or the spectators. It is not a good thing to have large crowds on a steep slope.
    Officially, the Rolling started as a competition by 1820 at least; I think the winner got the best grazing rights. But I suspect it might have much more ancient roots. There are very old traditions in Gloucestershire. The villages in the Cotswolds - this is on the edge of the Cotswolds - have, like many English villages, very ancient parish boundaries dating back over a 1,000 years.
    Now in the 4th century AD, there were Roman villas for the wealthy in the area, and there is evidence that some of these parish boundaries were simply the boundaries of the Roman villa estates! And the builders of megalithic monuments such as the Rollright Stones - over 4, 000 years old - deliberately put these monuments on boundaries, because the ancient idea was that the spirit world was nearer at boundaries. And the Rollright Stones are still on a boundary...
    So I don't find a possible explanation of the Cheese-rolling too far-fetched: that there is a link with ancient sun-worship, and the cheese represented the sun.
