To me messi's the goat but they both ain't human, just look at their stats they both got over 700 career goals, messi set the all time record for goals in one year with 91 goals in 2012 alone. They're also both all time top scorers of their respective national teams and they won 11 out of the last 12 Ballon d'ors (ballon d'or is like the annual worldwide mvp trophy). Messi won it 6 times and ronaldo 5 times, before them no player ever managed to win it more than 3 times in their career, that's how consistent and dominant those two been over the last 13 years. Nobody's stats in modern football even come close to theirs. A few players managed to get to the same level, but they all had short primes like 2-4 years. messi and ronaldo are the only players ever to keep that kind of level consistantly for over a decade.

Truth is, Ronaldo can be the best in any team, any style, any league, any field or any weather. Messi, as godlike as he is, will drop severely when out of his element. We've seen him stink too many times when things aren't going his way while Ronaldo will always cheer his teammates and probably score his goal. That's the difference between relying only in skill and also having a supreme physique. Ronaldo don't need to touch the ball all game before deciding it. He will jump over the defense or shoot from deep. Messi needs the ball and needs the team to involve him a lot more. And when this isn't possible for some reason, he becomes nearly useless.

Against Hungary in qualifier Portugal played 3-3 but Ronaldo goal should be invalid because he pushed with two hands the hungarian defender. Thats why he could score. Once he realized his body couldn t keep up he made a smart decision to keep dribbling at the bare minimum to avoid fouls.
But then you have Messi that also lowered his sprint rates in order to avoid knee problems.
The difference is that Messi is still Messi and Ronaldo is a shell of what he used to be.
