    You just helped me out big time. My car was at a repair shop for over 9 months, the shop let the battery die and somehow put the car into Valet mode. I couldn't get into the trunk in any fashion. I watched your video cleaned the contacts on the key fob and boom trunk opened. Thank you!!!

    Hello John,
    I had exactly this problem. The remote control was apparently defective and I always had the problem when opening my XK8 that the alarm went off if I was too slow... Thanks to this video, my remote control is now working perfectly again... Thank you very much for this very helpful video...

    Nice job there John. If I may ad some info to your vid, since lot of chaps they will visit by your title looking for info. It’s the Key-Fob reprogramming.
    Key-ring Transmitter Programming (Manual Procedure)
    • Insert Ignition Key
    • Hold Headlamp Stalk Switch active (headlamps ON)
    • Turn Ignition Key to position 1 (Auxiliary)
    • Flash Headlamp Switch: 3 times for 1997 MY vehicles or 4 times for 1998 MY vehicles
    • Confirmation chirp will sound and LED will flash once to indicate “Learn Mode” has been entered
    • Activate each Remote Transmitter by pressing any button on the transmitter once - a chirp will sound for each Remote Transmitter signal received (LED will flash); allow 15 seconds maximum between each press
    • Switch ignition off - confirmation chirp will sound to indicate “Learn Mode” has been exited (system will auto- matically “time out” after 15 seconds)
    Cheers.

      Thank you very much Nicholas. Believe it or not, I actually filmed that procedure at the weekend for inclusion in 'secrets ep 5'. However I had no idea that there were different numbers of flashes required for different model years! So rest assured that reprogramming is going to be referenced as your secret and I will include your text.

      @@ToTheGarage That's nice John.
      I have long history with Jags.
      My granddad had a MKII unfortunately went for scrap after a horrible crash .
      Dad had the XJ6 MK II and later I bought an amazing XJS only to sell it after 5 years...Unfortunately this wasn't the most reliable Jag, but was an amazing car to drive...
      I bought the XK8 back in 2000 and it's an everlasting love since then...

    Hi John, I posted this comment on the wrong video DUH. Having had intermittent response from both of my remotes and taking your advice in this video - great by the way - the remotes only worked for a limited time. So determined to find the actual problem I decided to open a remote and physically short the pcb fingers under each button, ie I had to remove the rubber button pad, and using a small flat bladed screwdriver I gently shorted the fingers under the button pad one at a time and I could not fail either remote, so the problem was conductivity was lost under the rubber buttons, to overcome this I stuck some conductive tape on each button and the remotes work perfectly and at 15mts from the car which before I had to be right on top of the car. I am so pleased to resolve this frustrating problem I just thought you may want to share this. I have a 1997 XK8 convertible. Keep the videos coming they are great and I genuinely look forward to every one you produce. All the best David Nixon Black Bourton Oxfordshire.

      @@ToTheGarage Hi again John, to be honest I removed the tape from a battery compartment on another device, so I don’t know, I would just google “conductive tape” I intend to try conductive paint over the next week or so as I can’t get my rear demist element to work although I have 12.5v on both side rails testing at various points up and down the entire rail on both sides to be sure the current is available the full length of both of the supply rails on the screen. I’ve looked at every horizontal rail and can’t see any breaks at all - so more testing me thinks - unless you have a suggestion? Thanks again John.

    • @davidnixon7834
      @davidnixon7834 3 года назад

      I forgot to mention John, the tape did not stick very well, I may have to use some sort of glue, cement or a drop of sealant if they move. So far I’ve had no problem, only time will tell I’m afraid. I just can’t get over the reliability and the range of the remote so far, I’m ecstatic after two years of frustration, and of course this should work for any similar remote with carbon buttons.

    John, quick question....what can I do with the antenna on a 2004 XKR if it doesn’t retract fully. around a fifth sticks out.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 лет назад

      Hi Andreas. If to retracts most of the way and then stops while making a whirring and a thud thud thud sound, then you are hearing the clutch slipping as its too much effort to retract it.
      I Have had this issue.
      Extend the antenna fully and check that it is not bent or kinked any where. If it is slightly bent then you can try to ease it back the other way but be carefull. If its kinked then its replacement im afraid. If its neither of these then its probably dirt or sand related. spray the antenna with a penatrating oil or WD40 and clean it thoroughly.
      Then lower and raise the antenna a few times spraying it in both positions.
      While it is mostly down, try to get a little movement in the sections that are still exposed by pulling them up a few millimetres and then down again. Finally, if this does not work, ask a friend to operate the radio button while you hold the top of the antenna and 'assist its retraction' by gently adding a little downward pressure to the top of the mast. Don't force it or bend it, you just want it to move a little further than it did previously. You may also be able to establish which segment is stuck or sticking and try to twist it gently while the motor is trying to raise or lower it.
      Hope this helps. I may do a little vid to show others how I did this. Its pretty common.

    On a 98 XJ8 jag after reprogramming 2 extra remote fobs - now sometimes when you hit the lock button the car makes a weird loud chirp sound and doesn't lock any doors - the sound is much louder and longer than the normal lock door chirp. it will do this every time you try and then as if by magic it will suddenly work as it should.
    Have you ever experienced this - Any thoughts or suggestions ?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 года назад +1

      It thinks one of the closure pannels is still open (could be a door or more likely boot/bonnet.)
      AS it fixes itself its probably a dicky microswitch that you can just clean up the contacts on. Check the one on the RH bonnet lock and the one on the boot latch

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 года назад +1

      Harry Scott hi
      I’m not aware of this being a real issue.
      The memory is retained by a capacitor. And as long as you are not pressing the buttons I’m sure 30 minutes would not be a problem.
      Quoting 2 minutes is probably just to stop people taking the batteries out and chucking the fob in a drawer until they go to the shops next. However I’m not the expert on electronics for sure.
      Luckily re programming the fobs is easy.

      a) present
      b) not damaged by rough installation of a Car battery

      It can be seen in the boot with the battery cover off. Look straight down between the Battery and the Fuse box. Its right down low

    Is the black stuff coming off the rubber not the carbon contact?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 лет назад

      david leighton 👋 Hi
      Yes some of it is.
      It starts to part company with the ‘impregnated’ black peg moulded into the button.
      You need to clean it off the circuit board as it will effectively short out the circuit when you don’t want it to.
      In extreme cases the black peg becomes non conductive and ironically a quick fix is to rub the peg with a soft pencil lead to add some conductive material. It won’t last very long but can often help establish the true issue with the remote.
      In these cases I recommend gluing a very small disc of tin foil to the peg.
      Thanks for watching and for getting involved. 👍

      Just watched your review of the XK8. Totally agree. Mine is an 99 convertible. Engine replaced in 05 for some reason. The only problems I've had has been abs and gearbox warnings. I now keep it on trickle charge and have even fitted a second battery on top of the original with a change over switch. No problems since but I feel this is a bodge!

  • @Orthopedux
    @Orthopedux 5 лет назад +1

    I don't know if you noticed that the batteries tends to empty quickly. I discovered that, even after a proper cleaning, there still was some black material between the lines.
    I suppose this is some of that carbon material, and that it does make a small contact between those lines, draining the batteries.
    I have put the board of a powerful torch, and have been able to see this material in transparency, then I scrubed between the lines with a hard and pointy tool to remove it.
    Anyway, the issue comes back rapidly. Maybe putting some metal adhesive on the rubber buttons to add more contact would be a good idea ?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 лет назад

      Hi Orthopedux . You are right re the black material coming from the buttons. If the black conductive element in the button starts to break down, a solution is to very carefully superglue some aluminum foil circles onto them
