Marzipan is way better than jam. Some people also like to eat it by submerging it into hot milk on a plate and eating it with a spoon, though I think this tradition is pretty rare.
The cupcake is actually a quite time specific culinary in Finland. It's made to honor Finnish poet writer, Johan Ludvig Runeberg, that passed away 6th of May, 1887. For example, Runeberg have composed Finland's national anthem. They say that he liked to eat this kind of cupcakes for breakfast with arrack or rum and the cupcake was originally invented by his wife. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Ludvig_Runeberg
I'm glad you liked it 😄 I think they're quite good even though I'm not so much into bakeries and other sweets. As a kid I loved to eat them every year on Runeberg's day 😋 Learning a new language through children's books and songs as well is always a good idea and a good way to start. Nothing embarrassing about it at all. Good luck 😊👍🏻
I ate one of those today, because my wife brought them from the shop. In my opinion it was a little too sweet, but still quite good. I'm not actually a very big fan of fancy cakes etc.
Kids's books, man. They are the thing to go for if you are learning from scratch. It may sound weird but it works. Oh, theres also the "manly version" of the cupcake. You take a tin of pea soup, try to get the whole clump out in one piece, add some mustard on top in a circle and there you have it. Seriously NOT worth trying, but still a good gag to impress your friends with or something... (and you can always make soup of it afterwards so you dont waste food)
Dave Cad used to have his fiance to tape the Finnish word over so you did have to guess it or use google translate so it sticks in your brain better perhaps?
aika härski nimi leivoksella. kyseessähän on kuitenkin Runebergin vaimon keksimä torttu ja nyt ihmiset sitten syö sitä Runebergin torttua :D en ainakaan itse muistele jotain hienoa herraa syömällä hänen vaimonsa torttua :D
I think it's time Gio.....you're finnish enough now. You have to pick a side in the laskiaispulla wars. Are you Team Hillo or Team Mantelimassa? Bonus points if you can eat the laskiaispulla without getting cream on your lips, that means you're going to have a good year. Don't ask me why, I didn't make the rules, I just ignorantly spread them
I really respect you for studying finnish, good luck!
You should eat it with a little spoon and have coffee to go along with it :) It's even better that way.

I love Runebergin torttu, but they are calorie bombs!
Maahanmuuttajana Suomeen, minäkin olen oppimassa suomen kielen. Me voisimme harjutella yhdessä.
Some versions of those are horrible. Luckily you bought one of the better ones. Test out laskiaispulla also, preferable the one with jam on it.
pfft....mantelimassa is the superior :P

Popular... Nah. Traditional.
I would say pretty popular when considering it is basically on one day the millions of them are being eaten :D
