At Portal 2, the material directory is not "Portal 2\portal2\materials" (In Hammer it appeares, but ingame it is rendered as a flashing flat white texture) The right folder is "Portal 2\platform\materials" But anyway, it's working, so thx philip for great tutorial as always :)

Now after many years of inactivity I am returning to the Source Engine for CS:GO, this is not only a nice tutorial but a very nice refresher. Any chance you'll go into details on various properties you can make in vmt?

This one time I was looking for a way to bounce all my tracks in Ableton at once. Found a 10 minute tutorial where the guy talked for like 5 minutes about his track and stuff and played his song and whatnot. Finally he gets to the menu where you render the audio, and guess what? The solution is right in the render menu, in a little drop down box. It took him 10 minutes to show something I could have told you in a sentence.

Hey, 3k. This tutorial doesn't really help when you want to Release the maps With the custom textures. Only the person who owns the textures will see them. You need to do a follow up tutorial on porting maps to steam With the textures embedded within the maps files, so that other people who download the maps get to see the textures as well! This comment is for 3k, as many will say to "use pakrat" or "try VIDE" but the wikis dont adequately explain HOW to use them, only what they are. So, a video tutorial may come in handy for those of us who are New to making custom textured maps.
All you need to do is create a folder called materials in your addon folder, add the textures to the materials folder and then publish it, and when people subscribe to the addon the textures will automatically be placed into their materials folder. There's no need for pakrat.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\content\csgo\materials seems not to be the right place? I cant figure out where the correct folder is to put my vmt and vtf file. Pls help. :S
I believe how I can help: If you want it to download automatically when they go to play the map, I think you should include a .res file. But if you're going to pack the materials with the map, do the following: You have to download a program called 7-Zip. It's a *free* file manager. And then, using 7-Zip, create a new .zip file by right-clicking the desktop or an empty space and selecting '7-Zip < Create *.zip archive' or something similar. After doing that, open the .zip file, and then right-click on an empty space _inside_ of the .zip file, and select 'New folder' or 'Create folder'. Make 2 of them, with one being 'maps', and the second one being 'materials'. Now, minimize 7-Zip, and open the folder where your map is located. Copy the .bsp file into the folder 'maps', located in your .zip file, and wait for the map file to 'inject' itself. After doing that, go to your 'materials' folder (not in 7-Zip), and copy the materials into the 'materials' folder in your .zip file. NOTE: In 7-Zip, you have to open a folder inside the .zip file, and *then* put the file in there. I hope it sums it up!

What if I'm making a decal/overlay? Will the resolution of the texture alter how it's sized in any meaningful way, and is it better to keep it at 512x512 for convenient sizing or at 1024x1024 for better quality decals?
I'm trying to make a remake of my CS:Source map, but I can't seem to activate the custom textures for CS:GO in hammer editor. I took the vtf and vmt files from the old map, put it into ...steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\materials\mytextures (vmt files say folder is: mytextures ame) - now when I open Hammer editor the textures are missing even though I've selected the folder in the options for materials. What am I missing here?
Does it share when I publish the map on the workshop? The new operation maps got custom textures and when I decompile them it's actually white instead of that custom texture. What about custom models? do they share at the workshop as well? I mean if people will download it won't they see a white texture or an error instead of a model simply because they don't have it? Okay, didnt create a VMT file but I found the Create VMT option under the Tolls section... inside it has multiple options like connecting to a bump file. If I use a normal, bump, reflector thing to make all of them from the texture I have do I need to convert each of them into a VFT file as well or can they remain a png or jpg ? ? ?

Hey Philip. You have by far the best Hammer tutorials. In following this one, everything works perfectly but the textures won't appear in game (purple and black squares instead). I have followed all the steps correctly and they show up nicely in Hammer. Any ideas?
When you have your VTFEdit open, click "Options" and click "Auto Create VMT File". You can also click "Tools" and then "Create VMT File", but if you chose the last you have to do it everytime ;-)

Hi, I have a problem with custom textures, I usually make maps into Hammer for use in Gmod, but unfortunately, after a windows re-instal, Hammer doesn't seem to "find" them anymore, even if I have all the required stuff in the right folder I think. I can still see my textures both in the editor and into Gmod, I have .vmt and .vtf files, but the compile window says "material not found", they appear lit up with no shadows at all, this happens only with external custom textures, while with stock textures everything works perfectly, this is driving me insane!! I have been around a lot of forums but it seems that no one is using hammer for gmod now! can we look at this problem toghether? tnx

The custom texturs to me is just blank it still sees the file but when I replace it , it doesn't work

Hmm, when I saved the image in VTFEdit, it only exported a vtf file, no vmt.
Ah ha, I have found the solution: under tools, create VMT.
