Great info. is this discussion skipping the temperature sensor wire.? or is this a relay w/temp sensor built into the relay instead of external on cylinder head? Anyone got a guess?
Very cool. . .happy it helped. I'm glad to see these legendary engines getting a second life through conversions from companies like 4x4labs and mercedesdiesel4x4 and people like you who put them in your vehicles.
Good information. Especially the color of the wire going to the dash indicator light. Friend has a 79 MB diesel & we might do the manual GP controller conversation, pending diagnosis. Wiring the dash light to the GP/load side of relay will act as an indicator still...
Wish i could pick your bebeaubrain bro..just bought an om617 he included the harness ends but everything is disconnected and I'm lost with this diesel/glow plug business. I just wanna start the bytch on a stand for now..will they start without glow plugs?
Good test I have a question When I turn the key my glow plug light does not come on, and I don't hear anything like it is working or not. The car doesn't start. When I disconnect the 5 plug in the relay and turn the key the glow plug light does come on and cycles like it should. I checked the prongs with the key on and unplugged from the harness, it has power then cuts off like it should. Any thoughts ?
Any idea why my dash lamp for the glowplug relay circuit might have started coming on and staying on? I'm a bit horrified at the idea that my battery might be trying to keep putting 12 volts into the glowplugs even when the engine is running normally. I guess I will go see if I'm getting 12 volts across one of the glow plug circuits with the car running (if I can keep from jolting myself). But even if that's not what's going on, what does the failure of the light to go out telling me? That glowplugs are getting no juice at all? In that case it ought to be devilishly hard to start the car.
Hi their, when I put the key in the run position the relay should send voltage to the glow plugs and then when the engine is running the relay should shut power off to the plugs. If it doesn't does that mean that relay in the video is bad? also is that the only relay for the glow plug system? I appreciate a response thank you.
Yours is the post 1980 I have a1979 om617, it has an extra wire that is green- would anyone have a clue what the green one goes to or comes from, it goes to the firewall
This is very well done...thanks! I'm now trying to design a push-button/flip switch w/led manual glow plug override because my failed-neutral safety switch blocks power to my guages and glow plugs it seems. (1983 300sd) Thanks for any thoughts/help!
After watching this a 2nd time it looks like I can make a temporary fix for a 1983-85' 300sd can bypassing the failed neutral safety switch by a momentary switch wired across the terminal box in front of the battery box-under the air cleaner (for the starter) and, splicing in a flip switch to the red w/black striped wire that's for ignition switch "on/start". It won't instantly shutoff the glow plugs upon start as normal...but it will shutoff after the 20-30 seconds automatically anyway. Am I missing something here?
Hello, I replaced the glow plugs on a OM602 '91 but the engine still doesn't start. No glow plug light on the dashboard either. Could it be the relay that needs to be replaced? If so, how to replace it? Thanks
Hi are u still alive lol . Will this work on a 1977 mbz it uses a different glow relay would I need to install all 5 wires to each plug since mine are all together
I want to say the early glow plugs had a 'loop' style glow plug instead of 'pencil' style, and I believe they operated on a different relay and wiring circuit. I believe most people convert to the pencil style, but I am not familiar with what all is involved. Sorry I'm not much help here!
Glad I found your video, I can keep my 300d relay for my swap
Thank you! I've been looking every where for something to explain how to re wire my relay. so obvious now....
Excellent show and tell. You explanation is clear and concise as well. Thank you!

Very informative. I will install one on my w126 260SE which i coverted into a 300SD. Thanks!
Great info!!! About to swap an om617 into my 97 jeep xj.. and this is what i need!!

This is a great video! Thanks for uploading it, it helped me understand how that relay works a lot!
Great job this is exactly what I need to know.

Yes little hard on the starter but she will start
Thanks for the video.

seem to be running into relays with four wires (Not counting harness of the 5 actual GPlug wires). Is he just not using one of the four?

Very helpful! Thanks!
What's the brown wire from the pigtail of 4 on the relay go to?
Ground (battery negative)
Excellent video!
If the glowplug light stays on while driving is that relay issue?
Had similar issue,
I adjusted relay and it worked fine but problem came back again
Thanks
@@Howie672 you're welcome.
