Excellent stand in for the legend Dave Greenfield, Toby is one heck of a Musician
Toby is absolutely brilliant.
Certainly is!
Wow just stumbled over this. I was in Toby's class and music class at school, even back then, he was a massive Stranglers fan. In fact he introduced the Stranglers to myself and no doubt many others at school. I can remember him impressing everyone with his renditions of no more heroes, golden brown and his boogie woogie. Was actually pretty jealous of his talent. There is no better man to take the reins from Dave Greenfield. Best of luck Toby if you read this, can't believe you made it into the band you were such a fan of. A long way from One by One, Gotham City bluesbreakers. Crazy how many people from our year had success with music of varying degrees.
Wonderful comment Matt, glad you found the interview!
just seen this, Matt H by any chance?
@@boogiewoogieadventures308 It is indeed., Hope you're enjoying the new role !
Really enjoyed this. Charming, easy to listen to, knowledgeable and humble. I think he's a great fit for a band I've loved since 1977!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this. What a talent and a gent Toby is.
Excellent ..Enlightening ..And Entirely interesting...Thanks a lot ..
Very welcome!
Seen Toby playing with the stranglers both nights in glasgow and was blown away with not only his ability but how much he respected Dave greenfields style and playing and comes across as a good guy
Yeah I saw him in Glasgow 2nd night of 2022 and the gig this year a d he was brilliant.
Great Interview Toby is such a down to earth and nice bloke. Fascinating to hear his story. He has been the perfect for The Stranglers. Funny I was blown away seeing a video of Toby doing walk on by.
Couldn't agree more!
What a great interview 👏🏻
And what a lovely, down to earth guy Toby is. A great fit for the band
Thanks for watching and he sure is a great fit!
Thoroughly enjoyed this interview with Toby, was very interesting. He was fantastic on tour with The Stranglers this year, and look forward to hearing more from him 🎹👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed that many thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Please stay with the Stranglers Toby. You fit in so well. I've been a Stranglers fan since 1977. I'm 67 this November 2022.
Great interview. The Stranglers could not have got a better guy to fill Dave’s enormous shoes. Toby was excellent on the French and UK tours. I bet Clint Boon was one of the high profile candidates that Toby beat out.
Clint Boon?! just can't picture the baggy Mancunian of the Madchester scene,I really can't.He's on Twitter ask him lol
Lol. Clint loves Dave Greenfield but would admit himself he is leagues below that standard.
Great interview, loved the insight . Saw Toby with The Stranglers at Guildford and Portsmouth, couldn't believe how he managed to play with so much respect for Daves keyboard style. What a musician, and top guy to boot.
Couldn't agree more Collin!
I can understand the comment “when it takes time to really understand a song or album, the intricacies or just outside the box type . . . You really appreciate it more and it becomes a favourite” It also shows with Tobys musical story, his boogie woogie influences, to 80’s pop/rock to legends like Mungo Jerry and The Stranglers, very different steps in the road that brings you to this moment. That’s why I appreciate these podcasts with varied personalities, it’s the story behind the music! Another great interview and listening from Canada 🇨🇦
Brilliant conversation. Toby is such a great bloke. Life long Stranglers fan and so excited to be welcoming them, with Toby, to Sydney next week!
Saw the band at Manchester Apollo in Feb….. brilliant show and great to see Toby bouncing around behind the keyboards just loving it and bringing his own vibe to the gig…. Excellent stage setup with the new boys opposite each other at the back driving things and the old boys in front owning the stage…
great interview saw you in glasgow with the stranglers and you nailed it keep rocking and rolling
Top interview and Toby is doing a great job trying to fill the boots of the greatest keyboard player of all time Dave Greenfield
and if you should see Dave i think he would approve very much of Toby
I think you may be very right Jasmine
Norfolk Coast is a brilliant collection. A really polished throwback to their earlier stuff.
Couldn't agree more - amazing album.
Thank you.. Great to hear Toby. He has stepped into very big shoes and is filling them well..
Totally agree!
Loved this. Heard the French tv gig & saw The Stranglers at Lincoln & thought Toby was outstanding. The music therapy conversation was fascinating too; great to hear how you're helping to change people's lives Toby 👏👏
That French gig is just amazing, can't stop watching it. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKeyboardChronicles It's a brilliant interview; your passion shines through!
Amazing interview 🖤🎵
Thanks Scott!
Cracking interview. Thanks.
Very welcome!
Not only an amazing keyboard player, impressive re the music therapy stuff. What a guy!
I saw The Stranglers at the UEA this year.
Brilliant.
Very moving when just JJ & Baz sung "And If You Should See Dave".
I'm counting the days until i see them down here next year :)
I was lucky enough to buy Dave's OB1 at an auction in 1992 , it sat in my loft until 2 years ago when I had it overhauled and now it's working again and on loan to a stranglers tribute band Rattus Inheritus
That is amazing Paul!
left in the loft all those years ??>: ) lofts are no friends of electronics :)
As a big fan of The Stranglers, a big like to this video! 👏👏And if someone is interested in piano covers of The Stranglers I offer two: Waltzinblack and Strange Little Girl.
Interesting Toby prefers mono over stereo. I wonder if the keyboard setup is mono for the stranglers?
I guess it is....
It's a good question - I think Toby's rig outputs in stereo but not 100% certain.
No mention of the great yamaha CS-1X that dave had three of on stage
Has Toby got a Wasp?
Not sure sorry Jo!
No, I think he just flails his arms around as a habit. 😅
This guy is not a Strangler. It's utterly laughable that a former Britpop session man is chosen by JJ on the 50th anniversary yet the man who formed the band via Jonny Sox Mr Hugh Cornwell is not even invited. This is a sham!
No way would Hugh Cornwell have wanted to be part of it. If you are a fan then I would hope you would know this. There is no heresy in Toby being invited to join. Its obvious he can play the songs so well and is a grounded character so why not. I don't understand the idea of looking for some sort of purity that does not exist for the replacement of band members. Whether they played some other genre in the past is of no relevance. What do you want ? To put Humpty back together again ? age/ill health took Jet and Dave and Hugh walked away in 1990. I am glad he is still doing his thing and that they are doing theirs. Different people come and go in a band that started half a century ago and each has brought something when they have. I still think the initial years produced the material that is trademark Stranglers and certainly is my favourite period but later incarnations produced some great songs too
