Art imitating life. This guitar is much like the bands that play it to get their sound. No masive amounts of effects, bells or whistles needed. Just tone in it's purest format.

I agree with you but I think the Gibson ones are just flat out better pickups than most other guitar manufacturers have made. There are definitely some good aftermarket P90s out there but other guitar manufacturers like Fender and PRS just don't make as good of pickups IMO. People bash on Gibson for everything, some deserved, much of it just people talking crap because they think it's cool or because they don't have one. But one thing that I don't think anyone can ever get on Gibson about is how good their pickups are.

For anyone who wants the P90 sound but you don’t want to buy a whole new guitar bareknuckle make humbucker sized P90’s and they’re BADASS, they sound really good and you have a tone of options of vintage to modern and I’m currently working on a project guitar that is using them. I haven’t had the chance to play through an amp with them yet but from what I have read online they do “the thing” P90’s are known to do and they sound pretty great, a little different from a normal P90 because it’s bigger but 99% of the way their and in a metal context I doubt any of us would notice.
Also just a heads up I’m not any way affiliated with them, I just wanted to share that information in case anyone wanted it.

I think you should definitely try a P90 in a down tuned guitar, a baritone guitar for example. The brighter sound compared to a humbucker makes the low tunings not go crazy in the bass frequencies and the saturation of the P90 gives enough body for a big gainy sound bit it's not as scratchy as typical single could pickups and less muddy than humbuckers. It's a great middle of the road thing, that really helps out with low tunings.

The P100 of this is a bit different, but a solid rock n roll pick up nonetheless, it is a stacked single coil which reduces hum and has a very unique sound. If you are more into real P90s you can afford some real nice ones and still pay less than half the price Gibson asks for.. I found a 57 RI for less than 300€ recently. The question is "what to do with the 60 cycle hum..??
I got my first P90 guitar with a Gibson SG Special about 2 years ago (the blue on in the picture there☝️)...and didn't know whether I should get a good noise gate, or if I should I get a minihumbucker for the bridge.
I ended up doing both. 🤷‍♂️
But as much as I have gotten great cutting tones from the mini, I have been feeling like I should give the bridge P90 another try...

Try'em downtuned through a heavy fuzz. My Les Paul standard was always too muddy even for our stoner/doom riffing, but my LP special downtuned through that same rig... just the right kind of nasty. I added now an EQD Arrows after the fuzz to eliminate some more mud and boost the signal a bit and it totally chugs.

I have two guitars, an ESP EC256 with humbuckers and an EC256P with P90s.
The P90 cuts through a band better than the humbucker and makes a great rhythm guitar sound.
It can bark and grind very well and has more definition than a humbucker. I’ve not had feedback issues from the stock P90s but then it’s a solid body guitar.
I play in a James Williamson/ Stooges style and both humbuckers and P90s suit me well. Raw rock n roll.

These are still a great introduction to the Gibson brand.

P90s, old gold- or silver-foil pickups, and the like are so much fun. Yeah, they're noisy, but they're so much fatter than a standard single coil with a certain bite to them. There's more treble and upper mid-range. So good. I already have a gold-foil equipped guitar (Harmony Bobkat H15V), but I think something with P90s may be in my future.

P90's rule especially if you love those Punk/Rock trebly riffs! I find a p90 that isn't too hot is the best as they have more headroom & isn't too hot from the off.

P90 sound is 1 AM at the end of the last set and the bar is not as full but more intimate. Sweaty but in the groove and hitting every note and sounding like a torn speaker cone. Ragged but under control. Love them.
Hum is not cool. To each their own though. Best Regards and Best Wishes

Gibson P90s are a bit on the wimpy side in my option so when I got my Tony Iommi SG I replaced them with very high gain Pig P90s from Bare Knuckle Pickups. My SG went from 8k to 20k on the bridge and from 7k to 18k on the neck. I also had them reverse wind the neck p90 so when it’s in the middle selection it acts as a humbucker. It definitely chugs.
