    Drew I gotta say...this was one of the most helpful and easy to digest videos on Gamecube upscaling. Thank you so much for this! My biggest question comes from input lag. As someone that is a casual speedrunner, was there any noticeable input lag from these converters?

      The HDMI adapters for the Gamecube typically introduce less lag than even the stock composite cables. This is due to the adapters having direct access to the Gamecube's digital signal.
      The Wii HDMI converters all introduce at least a small amount of lag on top of the system's internal digital to analog conversion.

      The Wii still runs GameCube games natively, mainly because the Wii is effectively an upgraded GameCube. In fact, even the Wii U would be able to natively run GC games, Nintendo just didn't bother supporting it.

  • @aleckermit
    @aleckermit 4 года назад +3

    A great option is to output a 480p VGA signal from the Wii to a CRT PC monitor. It's cheap and arguably superior to any current HDMI solution (no input lag, no quality loss due to bad upscaling, no motion blur/ghosting). A $20 GBS8200 or discontinued Extron CVC 200 or 300 + some cheap BNC adapter pieces will do the job.

  • @AllieRX
    @AllieRX 5 лет назад +2

    The GameCube's Digital AV Out gives you raw, uncompressed 480p. The Wii's output is analog only, so it converts the digital image from the disc and hardware into analog through the component cables. So with the Hyperkin HD cable, you go from digital to analog and back to digital. This not only hurts image quality, but can also increase input lag. With the GameCube HDMI, you not only get an uncompressed image, but also greatly reduced input lag that feels like it's almost not there.

    I have the Wii2Hdmi, and the best work around i could think of for the stretched image is to manually set my TV to 4:3

  • @GANONdork123
    @GANONdork123 6 лет назад +1

    For the older Wii2HDMI converter, there is a fix for the 16:9 stretch. You can use a homebrew application called Nintendont which is used to load games from USB but also has the ability to boot from an original Gamecube disc. The reason I bring it up is because Nintendont also allows you to force true 16:9 widescreen without stretching, and even force Progressive Scan mode, even on games that don't natively support it. A couple of games have issues with this (Sonic Heroes: misplaced HUD elements, Zelda Ocarina of Time/Master Quest and Zelda Collectors Edition: N64 games refuse to boot with forced widescreen), but for the most part, it's probably the best you're going to get out of original hardware.

    • @mazda9624
      @mazda9624 2 года назад

      @@SoleilPhoenix I 100% agree with you, but I just wish that more people would use component cables instead of composite. I recently found my GameCube in the loft but sadly none of the cables. Researching what cables to buy was really eye opening, I had no idea there were so many different variations (including the now insanely rare composite route). I was so close to picking up standard S-Video cables until I read those were only for NTSC consoles, so I went with a standard RGB scart cable instead.

    Leave it to Hyperkin to make yet another great product for us retro enthusiasts. Hyperkin and Retro Fighters make great stuff to use with our classic games, then we have awesome RUclipsrs like you to get info and reviews out to us before we commit with our wallets. You're the only person I've seen thus far who's gone in depth with the Hyperkin HDMI Wii cable and I'm very grateful you did because I've been planning on getting a Wii to play GC and Wii titles. This review plus the Wii cable pretty much sealed the deal so thanks for your awesome review. As for Gameboy games, I'll leave that to my Retron 5 since it tends to look leagues better on that system than the Gameboy Player, but that of course is all personal preference.

    Very informative video. The Hyperkin for me at the moment. But want my Gamecube alive again, so either EON or PLUTO board..

    You've forgotten one thing. If you live in PAL regions virtually NO GC GAMES support the progressive scan output. Making the use of an composite to HDMI adapter compulsory to have GameCube games in better quality

    Might be nice to point out that the Gamecube's digital port provides exactly that, a true digital signal out of the system. While Hyperkin's solution is nice, the Wii still puts out an analogue signal. Sticking with EON gets you a true digital signal out of the cube. It looks nice, id say even better than the original Xbox's analogue signal.

    I love all your videos! You have inspired me to start collecting retro video games. I know you already reviewed the GB Boy Colour in your Bootleg Game Systems video, but do you think you could do a more in depth video?

    There's definitely some lag with the Hyperkin, but it's a viable option for most people who do not want to spend $150

    Will the picture behave differently if the upscaled 16:9 would be scaled down to 4:3 manually ? Some TVs has got the option to change the screen resolution for the 4:3 for the older movies

    Someone suggested to me to get an HDMI converter for Wii the other day when I talked about F-Zero GX. Now I know what the best option is!

    There is one small issue with the wii. You better have that remote. My GameCube games generally go with me to get together and a few times I forgot the wii remote. I have the hdmi converter for the wii, but honestly the eon adaptor is truly the best picture you can get out the GameCube.

    Great video and I honestly haven't seen one that compared these options before. I do have the GCN component cables but I rarely use them.

    Hi Nintendrew, how about the other Gamecube HDMI adapter? The GC Video Plug n Play. It's in version 3.0 now and is cheaper at $99. Ever since MetalJesus broke version 1.0 it's had revisions and is now much better. I'd love to see that adapter v.s. the EON one. It even has the advantage of not taking up the standard A/V port, so you're free to use that AV cable to rout the audio somewhere other than your TV HDMI input.
    I'd even argue that it's the safest one since it's been tested against thrashing the console around (which no adapter should even be expected to withstand; it's only because MJ's channel gave it so much exposure that people have suddenly felt the need to test what happens if you move your console around while it's turned on, but nobody should be doing that anyway!)

    But that Hyperkin HD Cable is for the Wii or for the Gamecube? Both?
    Thanks.

    Drew I actually have the Eon and the Hyperkin, I got the EON cause I had some GC games that would work on my GC but many times would not work on my wii, or I had some rare GC games that had Rental store labels on them that could get them stuck in or damaged if they were in the Wii. But are hard to get otherwise. So the top loading aspect of a GC is also a factor in why i spent the extra cash on the EON. Also I have a GBP as well that was a big factor.

    On every 1080p TV I've used it still lets you set the AR to 4:3 and squashes up the 16:9 1080p picture. So you could just do that with the cheap adaptor on the Wii.
    Also a note for PAL users. Wii outputs in 480p. Gamecubes here however only output in 576i. Making it not work with most of these adaptors which require a progressive scan signal from the console. In such a case your best bet is a Wii, set to 480p, or an import or modded Gamecube.

    Most HDTVs can correct that stretched 1080p signal coming from the Wii2HDMI so it is not that big of an issue but can be inconvenient if you use that input for other devices and would need to switch between settings.

    If you're using the Ww2HDMU, you could also change the aspect ratio in your TV's settings.

    I have an ENO upscaler with composite hooked to my Wii and it's great! I hope it does not stretch GCN games! have not tried that yet! If it does im buying the Hyperkin. Thanks!

      Just use a CRT.
      That's no Problem coz GC is designed for it.

    I use a Toshiba DVD Recorder to hook up my classic consoles to my HDTV. It's really nice since it gives my the option of up scaling if I want to. It also eliminates all of the weird issues you sometimes see with classic consoles on HDTV. It also gives you the option to record your game play in an easy to transfer to computer format.
    Though looking them up now it looks like they have had a big jump in price. I got mine for around $70 it looks like they are going for $150 now.

    I was almost gonna break my bank and buy both a DOL-001 GameCube and GCHD but thanks to you kind sir, I will instead go with Hyperkin cables and the original Wii... A much cheaper alternative.
