After converting the text to outlines, is there any way in illustrator or by post-processing the svg filesto have the text be filled when it gets laser engraved? Lasergrbl always engraves the text as just edge outlines but I need to fill those in somehow. The text s only 14pts in size. Many thanks for any tips.

Making sure your ai file is filled and not stroked is good first step but this might be more determined by the software rendering the files. For a more specific answer feel free to reach out to support@sendcutsend.com.

@@sendcutsend Many thanks for your reply. Of course, no matter how you fill your text in Illiustrator or Inkscape, all that gets sent to the Lasergrbl is outlines. This is what worked for me: Because I'm engraving only small uppercase letters (about 1/4" high) I deliberately unfocused my laser, so I got a larger beam dot. Then I used 100% power and played with the speed. The result was very good - all the letters are filled in!! This wouldn't work for larger letters, though. IN that case I'd have to come up with a way to fill them that didn't cause the material to burn up. Anyway, thanks again.
