  • I thought I would give Roy Underhills Dovetail Grease Box A try. There is a huge mistake in mine can you find it? I had a day off and needed something to do. I have always liked the Mutton Tallow box.

The notch for the upper lid is angled the wrong way. It still works but as so many of my projects, I will do something stupid. Thanks Doc you always stop by. I am building a proper forge. Things are fixing to get a whole lot better.

What kind of wax/grease are you putting in it? Just wondering.

Not being able to hold this in my hand, I have a question. What is the top lid for? It seems to slide out of the way then you slide the bottom lid independently. Is it locking the bottom lid in somehow?

+Eric Bullard Yes sir it is. Notice it is cut at an angle and locks to keep the top lid from just flopping open. Bottom lid has a dovetail key this locks it from side to side movement. Top lid locks the bottom lid from moving away from the dovetail key.

+Dave Bardin - so it's only the bottom lid that slides away from the butterfly, not the top. Thus the top forces the bottom not to disengage from the butterfly. Am I correct?

I remember seeing this box before as a trick opening matchbox in "Puzzles Old And New by Professor Hoffmann 1893 edition" here are a couple links to pictures explaining the box www.archive.org/stream/puzzlesoldnew00hoff?ref=ol#page/36/mode/2up www.archive.org/stream/puzzlesoldnew00hoff?ref=ol#page/62/mode/2upPlus a lot of the other puzzles are relatively easy to make
