I'm in awe of the train stations in the videos I've seen , super high ceilings and spacious sections in them, I think it's worth visiting even if I don't actually ride the trains.

$258 for a room in that little town? You've gotta be BS'ing me. If I'd been driving, I probably could have rustled up a $45 room on the highway and parked in front of my door. (The more you pay for a room, the farther you have to schlep your bags) They don't call it LUGgage for nothing.
I've ridden that line several times, mostly in the middle of the night on the Montrealer. I did see some of the Vermont territory in daylight one time when my northbound train was dreadfully late. Another time, I took the Executive Sleeper from Washington to New York, walked to Grand Central, rode the Adirondack to Port Kent, took the ferry to Burlington, ate dinner someplace, cabbed it to Essex Jct and took the Montrealer back to Washington in a roomette.
This was in 1990 or 1991, and this trip could not be made today. Amtrak kicked people to the curb so far as DC to Canada is concerned. All the rail lines in the video still have passenger service, but it's one big non-connected disaster.
In 2001, I found a great fare on VIA Rail Montreal-Halifax, but I had to fly to and from Montreal. That $258 room in St. Albans wouldn't get you a park bench in NYC. And Hampton Inn is WAY above my pay grade anyway.

it is not that empty, it just runs through a thinly populated stat. look at the total yearly ridership at each station
