  • John Fetterman sat for his first interview since having a stroke and used captioning to help with auditory processing issues. NBC correspondent Dasha Burns reported difficulty with "small talk," which set off critics who called her "ableist." Dan Abrams and SiriusXM political analyst Ameshia Cross discuss the interview.

    I've not heard a single report, not even a single minute discussion on any channel about where Dr. Oz stands on policies. He doesn't discuss policy & neither does the media. If only the actual policies that impact voters lives received the level of scrutiny that his stroke gets.

      @@shuffman8094 I just checked it out and under the issues link it's absolutely dribble. When Bernie Sanders ran in the DNC primary in 2020, he had *detailed* plans & policy laid out. You could spend a week reading through the material & probably not be done. I'm sure it's probably still up and you can compare the difference. Dr. Oz doesn't have anything on there but talking points & some of it is over the top political spin. I didn't vote for Biden, but when I see a website blaming Biden for the national COVID lockdown that occured prior to him being president & which triggered the current supply chain issues, I know I'm reading nonsense.

    The job of a Senator in the U.S congress is so very important, not only to his district, but the nation as whole. We should never discriminate anyone with any disability for any job that the person can do, however, I believe that Fetterman would not be able to do the job effectively as a U.S Senator. The people should have all of the info including his medical information in order for them to make their decision. The fact that Fetterman refused to provide it, I can only guess that his medical condition is pretty bad!

Wow. He has problems comprehending/processing vocal words. That’s a big deal if he’s supposed to be representing thousands of constituents. How can he listen to people talk. How can he keep up with legislation. This job is not a favor for him. It’s about what’s best for the residents in that area. Not what’s best for him.

  • @Dawnabrat
    @Dawnabrat Год назад +2

    Is it a simple hearing loss for the time being? If he answered the written words quickly which he appeared too, it's not comprehension. His Dr has signed a write off saying he is able to perform the job. The other person said their have been other interviews. It's not easy to read lips if you suddenly go deaf. The real information voters need is he mentally able? I think the reporter saying he could not comprehend spoken words was not the right words. She should have said I did notice he had a hard time hearing me in conversation. Bad timing for his stroke, during a campaign. I hope he will win. Oz is not a good candidate. On his tv show selling stuff many banks will not allow people's money to go through because there are so many issues with the products he pushes. You seem to be talking of how other news outlets or shows talk about things rather than presenting your own way too often lately. Mentioning it once in a while is fine but you are not suppose to report on reporters. I really love NewsNation and I hope you stop doing so much of that. It's a negative campaign for your station. Rather than just being positive and reporting news and doing interviews.

      If you watched the interview, Fetterman's cognitive ability is sharp. You have to believe your own eyes and ears. If not, doctors have analyzed his interviewed and said just as much publicly. His doctor has issued a statement which is much more credible than Trump's doctor when he had Covid. The stroke affected his hearing and how his mind processes it. That's why he has to read the close caption. It's a handicap that may or may not resolve itself in time. I've personally had a stroke and couldn't move half of my body for a period of time. But praise God, the disability resolved itself and everything works fine now. The brain found a different pathway to all the different parts of the brain. The bottom line is Fetterman has NO cognitive impairment unless you listen to radical right wing political hacks raising doubts without proof.

    Dan, I hope you man up and give an update tomorrow. Because if you watch the NBC Nightly News clip (not the MSNBC one which is different) you will see what she did and said. It was clear that Fetterman needed the CC, and NBC provided it. Yet on the Nightly News segment, Dasha Burns said to Lester Holt that prior to the CC screen being set up, and during small talk “it was unclear if he could understand” what she was saying. It was an unnecessary comment because he couldn’t understand! Hence the need for the CC device. Yet she framed it as if he had a cognitive deficit which it made him unfit for office. Her comments were unnecessary and seemed to push a narrative about persons recovering from strokes. This segment of yours was unprofessional and lacked research. You were trying to pit sides by using a clip that wasn’t the clip in question. You tarnish YOUR brand with this lack of vetting and research.

    Mr. Abrams your bias and disrespect is showing. I started listening to your channel because of Chris Cuomo and was impressed with the stated goal of fair, unbiased coverage and I found this coverage did not meet my expectations.
    I listened to her entire interview of Mr. Fetterman yesterday and was unimpressed with the technique used. I thought she spoke too fast and with increasing aggressiveness to someone she knew has processing issues. I found her persistence in repeatedly asking essentially the same question, disturbing. She acted as if he didn’t understand and the aggressiveness of her questioning seemed to increase each time. She showed no consideration for his impairment even after he had explained his hearing/speech processing issues. Her entire approach made me feel uncomfortable.
    There were other topics I was interested in and would have liked to hear him explain his positions on like abortion rights, voting rights, SCOTUS expansion, student debt, taxes, etc.
    It seemed to me that because of his processing issues he could not react to her rudeness appropriately. He has a legitimate need to read and process her spoken words.
    I was impressed with his straightforward responces when he is speaking to live audiences in his townhalls. Fielding any and all questions from them in a timely manner.
    I am sensitive to her performance because I had similar issues to Mr. Fetterman's from my stroke. The young people I worked with showed similar types of rudeness and disrespect.
    All I hope for all of your sakes is that you never face the same health or work issues and accompanying disrespect.
    It's that old admonition from my mom about "not judging anyone until you have walked a mile in their shoes." Or if you prefer, the Biblical "judge not, lest you be judged" when dealing humanely with others.
