    Absolutely the best audio and video of ANY 'takeapart' of ANY system that I have watched. Very professional production! I would have liked to have seen him also add the M2.SATA board. I decked mine out with a 250GB SATA SSD, 250GB NVMe, AND a 64GB M.2 SATA board. (Just see if it all works, which it does. All 3 drives were accessible.) I did have some problems though... After the above 3 drive test, I was later testing a Video Capture board that plugs into NVMe slot. The video board works fine, but has a tall heatsink that requires that the metal SSD cage be removed. The system booted fine with Arch Linux loaded onto the 64GB M.2 SATA. The video capture worked great. But after that testing, I have a problem with the SATA Power/Data connection. The SSD drive is seen in BIOS intermittently, and the system will not boot anything from the SSD. I have tried two different SATA cables w/o success. I could NOT find anything in Intel's documentation showing the correct cable orientation. It is a flat cable like laptop keyboard connectors, which 'could' be plugged in backwards. The contact pins on the cable are only on one side, and the connector is too small to see the contacts inside. There is a blue tab on one side of the flat cable which should be on the 'wider' side of the connector socket facing 'away' from the M.2 SATA connector. Since two cables fail, I have to assume that I damaged something in the connector? So this is a 'caveat' to anyone removing the flat SSD cable. I don't know if Intel will cover this under warranty???

      Hi Dale. Thanks for the awesome comment and that extra info about the issues with what maybe the ports, it is great info and will be useful to others. As for video capture, have you tried any of the Thunderbolt options by Blackmagic Design? I don’t have this NUC anymore but when I did I used a number of Thunderbolt interfaces with it and it was awesome. I also have another video showing this NUC editing 4K/60 game capture footage, it should be in my NUC playlist. While I’m not really happy with how loud this NUC goes once it’s processor and QuickSync engine are being used in any post applications, such as an NLE or encoder, it is the best small computer I’ve used and for its size it’s really powerful. In fact, it beats desktop Gen 11 CPUs in certain tasks due to its iGPU, it really is a great machine. Cheers, Dave.

    Thank you for this information. Im considering buying one of these for music production. I plan on using Ableton and installing 64gb of ram. Your video was straight forward and easy to follow. I was wondering if you had any insight on if this is a good option for music production.
    I like that theres not GPU complication or crazy power supply or fans. Do you know if this system would be enough to make some music? if not, what could i add to make it work well?
    thanks again!

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  2 года назад +1

      Hi. This is well good enough for music. I use Cubase and this NUC is easily more than enough. You definitely won’t need 64GB of RAM, it will be a waste of memory for most things and way too much for any DAW. I can run all kinds of VST plug-ins and instruments without any issue and that’s with 16GB RAM. Just plug in your USB audio interface and you’ll be good to go. It can be a little noisy but that was when I was doing video rendering which was maxing out the CPU and the iGPU. This is an awesome little machine for audio and music work and it is very energy efficient and mega compact. Cheers, Dave.

    Very good, clear and detailed tutorial. I just put together the i5 version of this NUC using your video. Easy-peasy. But dismayed when the RAM I bought to go with it (Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB of correct specs, 3200MHz) would not allow it to boot. Apparently the NUC is picky about what memory it will work with - and there is a lot of misinformation out there on this. Dave, do you recommend those Ballistix you used? (Not shown on the Australian Amazon website where your link redirects to).

    Very good and compact video!
    How "silent" are those Intel NUCs? Do you her the fan in normal office and web browsing work?

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  Год назад +1

      Hi Patrick. Under regular use, browsing etc. You can hear the fans but they are quiet in the background and likely to be drowned out by other noises if in a typical home environment. However, once you push the system, for instance with video editing, encoding etc. The fan noise, in my opinion, is unbearable. I ended up selling this NUC because of the noise when video editing. Cheers, Dave.

      @@DavidHarry This is very disheartening to read. I was just about sold on buying this NUC to use as a media center and emulation machine, but now I’m worried about the fans being unbearably loud. After dozens of hours of research I’ve done on these NUCs, it looks like I’m back to square one. Welp.
      EDIT: May I ask what you bought as a replacement?

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  Год назад +1

      @@StuntmanSnake If you can’t buy one from somewhere where you can send it back immediately for a refund if you’re not happy with the noise, such as Amazon. I’d be very cautious about buying one, the fan noise really is loud when under strain. You can’t even really get around this with the fan settings in the BIOS and even if you could slow them down, the CPU is likely to throttle immediately or even get damaged under serious load due to heat if the fan isn’t allowed run as high as the CPU needs. I also tried this NUC for some Android emulation, native Android X86 and some light gaming and the fans got annoying very quickly doing those things as well. If it were being used as a media server, NAS etc. In a different room or machine room, then there wouldn’t be a problem. However, a tiny computer like this is likely to be sitting very close on a table or next to a TV. It’s a real shame as I’ve put together many NUCs and mini PCs over the years and this is an excellent NUC, tiny PC, as far as its processing power is concerned and its iGPU is surprisingly powerful for what it is as well. Cheers, Dave.

      NUC 11 i5 is a great option. The NUC 12 series will be a lot more expensive and a lot bigger. I personally don't see the point in any NUC that is bigger than what we've been used to, these bigger "Pro" NUCs are no longer the small device like the others and are starting to get to the size of a small desktop. NUC 11 i5 is definitely the way to go. Cheers, Dave.

    The new Rode GO 2's have just come out, are you going to get a set?

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  3 года назад +1

      I doubt it. I don’t really have a use for a set, I already have two MK1s. Plus, I’m gonna hold off buying into the mic and camera stuff for the channel for the next few months as I’m weighing up what to concentrate on with the channel. I kind of do two types of tech thing, one is the mic and camera stuff and to do with the vloggy thing and the other tech stuff is the computery type of stuff, phones, Apple stuff etc. Im gonna see how things go for a few months or so and then start leaning more toward the side that gets more views. I need to start responding to what people actually watch rather than what I think they’ll like or the stuff that I like doing most. At the moment I’m just getting ready to get shut of a bunch of stuff on eBay. I’m gonna package up the best version of my i9 9900K workstation and a bunch of drives and interfaces etc. get shut and then probably make a decision on what to build next as my main system. That said, I’ve got a bunch of mic videos coming up and have been sent a nice mic and gimbal to review.

      @@DavidHarry Cool, don't blame you. It's a funny old thing RUclips isn't it, cos sometimes if you are too broad with your output then people can get a bit washed out with content. Me personally, obviously my interests are more on the music side than the gaming/Pc side. Still have a little watch of the other stuff you do though, it's just that I don't relate to it as much as the audio stuff. You put loads of effort into your vids and your content is always great, so no matter what you are making it will get peoples attention. It's just down to working out how to please the RUclips algorithm I guess. Getting it noticed further afield. My stuff has no real direction, it's more like a scrapbook of random things and incidents. If it makes people smile a little bit then I'm happy. Might start putting more of my older music on at some point too, give that a bit of an airing out! I am slightly tempted to get the new Rode Go though. I've got one set of the original ones, but these new ones look like a real step forward.
