This video essay/documentary hybrid centers around Harvey Milk, and the historical context surrounding the gay rights movement of the time. Using footage from Gus Van Sant's brilliant biopic "Milk", "The Times of Harvey Milk"(the documentary that inspired it) as well as a documentary named "Stonewall Uprising". I think it's an important piece of history that's often overlooked, to look back on the way things were helps us to realize how far we've come, because of people like Harvey Milk standing up for something they believe in.

have you done a video on stonewall/ the stonewall movie? the real history and/or the difference from the movie would be an interesting topic
I would suggest "Victim" with Dirk Bogarde, made in 1961. It's about an English married barrister who is about to be made judge. He finds out that an acquaintance commits suicide because of a blackmail scheme going on. People were being sent telegrams threatening to "out" people and it created a panic. Bogarde is great in this, and it had to be a difficult part to play, because he himself at the time was a closeted gay man. Yet the fact that he was in it was a huge statement. Plus at the time it had to be made in the UK, the subject matter was such that the US would never have made it, due to the Production Code and the power of the Catholic Church. As an avid reader of Roger Ebert, I found out about it through his "Great Movies" column. I believe the essay is still up on his website, it's a beautiful piece of writing, as is most everything he wrote.

Thanks, Will! That's really cool, the timeline just seemed so fitting to me, because that's the history that Harvey grew up in. These days a lot of young people might wonder why so many lived in the closet for so long, but those who think that way are forgetting just how different of a world we lived in just a few decades ago. I really appreciate that, thank you for saying so! And yes, totally agree. Stonewall was a crucial moment where the gay community decided they would no longer be bullied into submission, Harvey Milk's candidacy and subsequent stint in office sparked a movement to bring that community out into the open, without which, who knows where the movement would be today.

Thank you! I agree, while film will likely stay as my main focus(It's just where I'm most passionate and most comfortable) I have every intention of continuing to branch out. Though so far, the few times I've strayed from film seem to be my least popular videos, so it's hard to gauge how to move forward. But yeah, I'd love to talk more about music, or video games, or history or anything that interests me really.

So inspiring to learn of the people like this who have helped spread understanding and acceptance for our community throughout the world. How come you never mentioned marsha p johnson? A trans women who founded the pride march, without her Harvey Milk wouldnt have had the political support he gained from a politicized LGBT+ community, thanks mainly to Marsha.
This video started off after working on my last video about the Zodiac killer, and all that 60's San Francisco history led me to think about the Gus Van Sant film "Milk", so the video started with the intention of discussing the film mostly, and then I pivoted to more of the historical stuff that you see in the video now. So basically, it was always going to be about Harvey Milk, and that meant leaving out a lot of important names and events for the sake of staying on task. There were many people who were instrumental in the movement, many more than just Harvey Milk, but if I've learned anything from making these videos it's that people really don't like if you continue to stray too far off topic. I guess I could have made the video broader in scope to discuss the movement as a whole, because there are plenty of amazing stories besides just Harvey's that are worth sharing, but I had already spent a fair amount of time heading in the direction of this being a Milk-centered video that to pivot that late in the process would have meant missing my deadline.
Totally understandable, i said wrote what because you could of easily mentioned Marsha since you spoke about the Stonewall riots AND even the first pride marches. However i understand where you are coming from and it didnt detract the quality of your video. Thanks for replying and i'll be sure to share your video as well. And what do you say about the influential role Bayard Rustin played in the 1963 March on Washington? Where was he during the event? They threw him under the bus strictly because he was gay.

As a trans person and an activist for queer equity in this country, this video was a needed reminder. It's so exhausting but it's a good reminder that those who came before us fought just as hard.

When I was barely beginning to be a teenager is when I saw the commercials of the movie Milk. I don't know why but I always felt the urge to see that movie. My brain never fully understood the topics and what it was really about other than a movie related to the government. My parents were so confused about why I wanted to and told me it was about a gay politician which I didn't know at the time. But that never stopped me from wanting to see it. To this day, I still want to see that movie but haven't gotten the chance to despite it being 10 years old.
I'm not gay, nor straight. But after seeing this video made me realize that I was attracted to the change. How I enjoy those that have goals and wish to make a mark on the world for the better. This video has made me want to see the movie even more so I most likely will this week. Good job and keep up the good work!

Harvey Milk is a inspiration to both LGBTQ & straight alike.
I supported Harvey Milk in all four of his campaigns for office. Even in San Francisco this was an uphill struggle. LGBTQ rights were not gifted to us by the Democratic Party, we had to fight for them 🌈

AMAZING AND POWERFUL VIDEO. I am originally from South Chile .. years after the Movie and documentaries about this guy Milk. Gay life, rights and big movements were pushed and changed society minds . Same-sex marriage in Chile has been legal since 10 March 2022. I am so proud of that. And so very great full for what Harvey Milk did..
Awesome video! I watched *"Milk",* starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk. It was an awesome movie! The first time I'd heard of Harvey Milk was back in the early 1980s, long after he had been assassinated, but still remembered by those who knew Harvey Milk.

I think RUclips basically blacklisted this video to be honest. I mean, look at the views compared to my normal videos, I don't think that's a coincidence. Oh well, RUclips wants to avoid any potential controversy, so I imagine having the word "gay" in the title didn't help. Because sadly too many videos with that word in the title are more like "why gays are evil" or something along those lines, so I think the algorithm just tucks it away to avoid the trouble.
That said, thanks so much for saying so man, I was really proud of this one and was sad when it was barely seen by anyone. Don't feel ashamed! There's always time to check it out when you get the chance :)
Can't stop crying watching this video. ps. I really like this kind of mixture between bio pic and real life historical events, because most bio pic is only good and enjoyable to the viewers when the history background is understood by the viewers. And memoralizing history events and figures is another layer of value other fiction based films couldn't have.
I would love to do another video like this at some point, but I'm genuinely nervous considering how this one performed :/

The only thing I disagree with you on is, we do not have to be patient for change and equality. Equal rights should not "take time" or require "patience". We demand equality, and we work out asses off fighting for it!
All I mean to say is that it's just the unfortunate way of the world. Getting impatient means losing hope. I wish everything could change for the better overnight, but thats just not how it ever happens. It's awful, but these things do just take time, and patience is important so we stay in the fight.

Great video. However, don't forget that gay men weren't the only ones involved in the Stonewall Riots. Trans women (especially trans WOC) had a large role as well.
Of course! I wanted to keep the focus tight on Harvey for this video so I skimmed over a LOT of important details when discussing Stonewall, I felt like I couldn't leave it out entirely as it was such a landmark moment for the LGBTQ community, but you're absolutely right.
I used to wrestle in school, and I loved it....
Question- Do you think Dan White was possibly gay? Did he send the death threats to Harvey anonymously and when he didn't listen he lost it? Hmm? It's injustice that Dan White only got 5 years in prison! RIP Harvey Milk

I truly inspiring look into one of the most progressive and inspiring Americans to have ever held office. I personally always been fascinated and Harvey milk, and you did a great job explaining both he and the impact that he had. Awesome!

I didn't ever even hear his name until watching Gus Van Sant's film, had always wanted to make a video on it but the more I kept writing the more it started to become a sort of biography on the real guy instead of an analysis of the film, but both the film and his story have always been very inspirational to me.
Oh yes! I'm so glad you focussed on Harvey for this one. Not just a typical film analysis. Really wonderful. Sharing to the max by this appreciative gay rights activist and gramma. And yes, more historical coverage of others shown in film. by you would be great.

This is being great! However I think you should define better your focus if you want to change somehow the way you make your videos, or better, decide more what to do with the channel in itself. I felt you went "off the script" for this video, an while the results were great because the video is really good, it does not fit almost at all with movie focus that your channel has had until now. In fact, while you used footage from the movie with Sean Penn and from the documentary, you barely addressed them, and you used their images mostly as prop for your storytelling. It could have been interesting to analyse how Milk's history has been told in these two different movies, or how they affected Milk's legacy, or to have this kind of takes on the topic. I think that you should just decide if you want to keep a more movie-oriented approach or starting doing completely different video essays. Both of the paths are cool, because you demonstrated here once again that you are so good in doing what you do. Keep on with the great work!
You're probably right, and I'll likely not stray too far off in the future as this video really didn't perform the way I had hoped. But I like the idea of changing things up every now and again, I just think I'll probably have to wait for a bigger audience before I can get away with it lol

Indeed, a very historical type video essay with lots of hopeful notes :). Similarly the same thing at the end of your video could be said about the Communist regime & the cold war; decades ago many people felt World War 3 would transpire within the 20th century and wipe everyone out, but instead the Communist Regime eventually collapsed and oppressed peoples under it's rule eventually won the day.
Also in regards to the Gay Rights Movement; I think back to my school days, and it seemed everyone I knew in middle & high school here in North Carolina in the late 00's and early 10's was pro gay marriage, or at the very least no one I knew was against it. Definitely this would have been different without the several decades long historical context & background. Ongoing & maintaining dialogue is also extremely important, it keeps society together in many ways.

No no, I am for gay rights & gay marriage. What I was saying was, adding to your point(s) made in the video. That the long strand of dialogue that has spanned for decades was successful. That back when I (a 1995 born Millennial) was in Middle & High school everyone I knew was either for gay marriage or just didn't have an opinion about it or against it. See? That was my point. For example I knew several kids back in school who were say against pot or drugs entirely, but whenever gay marriage came up in conversations among peers, I cannot recall a single person really being against it in any way, which is impressive (I feel).
Lol, I totally read that wrong as "at the very least no one knew I was against it", glad to clear that up xD Right on, yeah, it was about the same experience for me, though there was a lot of homophobic rhetoric going around where I lived at the time. By high school though for sure it was a different story. Yeah, sorry, I'm just dumb and blind apparently :P

Hi, their is something I would like you to address. I do not know if you have the resources to do a video on this? Having worked in various Juvenile Halls, Corrections facilities, there are many issues. I want to focus on one.
It is impossible to place a Gay kid in a group home, UNLESS, they are declared him/her of being a sexual predator. The State will not pay for a Gay kid, that can not live with their family. So they have to end up having being a criminal to get placed. It puts everyone in a strange place. Just asking, maybe HRC should deal with this, but? Since you asked?

This is an excellent video, interesting change from the film-centric ones. Why did you decide to make a video about this topic, out of interest?

While I still love doing the video essays on film, I've been interested in branching out on occasion to try some new things, and it was a story I kept coming back to when writing my last video on Zodiac. I just couldn't believe how many insane things were happening in the 60s-70s in San Francisco, so I thought it would make for an interesting follow up to that video, especially given the contrast in subject matter. To think that both of these things overlapped in time and place totally blows my mind, so I wanted to explore that. As far as Harvey Milk in particular, I had never even heard his name until watching Gus Van Sant's film and I couldn't believe I was never taught about him in school. We always learn about people like Martin Luther King Jr., or Gandhi, but Harvey Milk is a name I seldom see mentioned when talking about important civil rights figures, so it was the combination of being interested in the history of that time and place, and feeling that this was a story more should here :)

I have never lived as a gay man though I am bisexual . I chose to have a monogamous straight marriage . I do not regret giving men up sexually but lately I feel like I lost something by not being an active part of the gay community .So lately I have been researching gay liberation of the seventies . I knew we had come a far way but when watching these old videos I get shocked by the frankness bigots used to display .
I never knew what it was like to fear being arrested for buying a man a drink or to fear being outed and losing my apartment and job at the same time . I never came out to my parents and got disowned and cast out . I never lived a gay man's life . So I feel like an interloping Johnny Come Lately . These videos are helping me catch up as best as I can . I was born the year of Stonewall and came of age during the AIDS epidemic , which effectively locked my closet with me in it .
To me I lost out on the brotherhood of Gay People . Some say its barely breathing these days and thats a shame . I wanted to be part of that family but I feared for my very young life at that time . So I just hid and went on living straight . Its been a good life but I feel like I have cut out a part of my story .
