  • Full review of the 2018 50's Road worn Fender Stratocaster guitar, after searching for a while i bought this this MIM Fender stratocaster it's definitely one to play in the local guitar store due to the jumbo frets, it's a great looking 50's Fender stratocaster guitar and the V shape neck makes it easy to play,, please leave your thoughts in the comments below and as promised here's the link to the relic'd pick guards.

    I agree with everything you say! Bought my MIM Road Worn in 2013 after playing 10 other Strat's in a guitar store. I was lucky enough to have 2 vintage Strat's to compare it to (57, and 54). After changing the pickups to Fralin Vintage Hot pickups, and CTS pots with paper & oil capacitors off ebay, it was VERY close to a vintage sound! It looks like your body is 2 piece, mine as well, not sure if it matters, but less is more I say! What a great deal to get a "Custom Shop" guitars for $700.00 in 2013! People might say "Why buy a Road Worn", but like you, I play mine all day long, not worrying about nicks & scratches! I have 12 electric guitars, all Gibson or Fender, and this would be THE LAST ONE I would sell, enough said?

    Hey Derek, I found you through Steve Guitar's site..... I bought the 50's Road Worn a year or so ago, and it's still one of my favourite strats. I replaced the pickups with some Zexcoils, and had the body refinished as I couldn't come to grips with the fender relicing. And like you replaced the pick guard with something a little older looking. Your assessment of the neck is spot on... it's the most comfortable neck I've ever played. Thanks again for the detailed review!

      Thanks Scott and thanks for popping over to my channel, I keep thinking I’d like to swap out the pickups on mine but not sure what to, it is a great guitar and for me the neck felt comfortable right away, it did take a while to get used to jumbo frets but they feel good now, it’s strange because I have a Thinline telecaster I built which has a 12” radius neck and now it feels so flat, cheers man!

    Nice overview of why a Strat. I come from the same place as I always loved teles, but strats are somehow inevitable and you covered the reasons for that very well. I bought a '57 Reissue several years back, but am rethinking it as they got it a little too spot on and the pups are weak. I don't want to mod it, just sell it and get a MIM or the equivalent. The used ones I pick up in every big box store sound like yours so that is probably the way to go. For some reason, I tend to look at strats differently than my other guitars, more like tools for a wide variety of jobs. As to relic and road worn, we differ. I recently had a conversation with my childhood friend with whom I shared a cheap Rodeo electric which we 'reliced' in about two years of dragging it to school and to each other's houses. We decided that that experience traumatized us to the point that we are both rather anal about the appearance of our instruments. We always had an unrequited lust for the shiny strats, teles, (and Mosrites) hanging on the store wall. Lastly, I would like to hear more of your playing on subsequent videos.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  5 лет назад +1

      Brad Laue thanks for the comment, yes it’s inevitable that you end up buying a strat and to be honest it’s my go to guitar now, it’s so easy to play it’s like you can throw it around, I have a similar friend in the U.K. and he likes the shiny strats and to be honest I can go either way, just love this one, and thanks for the kind words

      @@DerekPaulGuitar Gotta have one if you are into classic rock at all, but they perform well in just about any genre you could mention. I pick mine up all the time to thumb pick Chet Atkins tunes while I save enough for a 6120. Those strat necks are sweet.

    Only the pickups are made in Mexico, and guitars are assembled there; the pots are Japanese. The rest of the guitar is American, and the guitar is painted in Corona, CA. Great comments. I could have bought a custom shop instead of this, but I preferred the 50's Road Worn! I put Jumbo Tall Stainless Steel Frets on mine! I use a .14 for my high "E". I subbed and liked! 👍👍

    I was skeptical for relics in the beginning but as time passes I like the idea more. For me taking the stress out when buying a new guitar in order not to scratch it or looking at every minor imperfection really takes all the fun away even in not so expensive mid range guitars. The guitars that I enjoyed/played most were my older guitars that I didn't care much about their appearance. I think I might try a relic my self at some point. In any case I think the road worn series in general had relicing done right for my taste at least. It didn't seem too much and looked great. From what I have heard they also played really well.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  2 года назад

      I also like the idea that you don’t have to worry so much about any dings or damage, it’s still my favourite guitar to play, I’m very much a relic advocate, cheers for the comment!

    I've owned my black 50's Roadworn Strat for a little over a year now. Love it. It looks great, sounds great, and plays great. If I had any complaints about this particular Roadworn Strat, it would be the setup out of the box. I think that's more an issue with the retailer than it is with Fender.
    I'm considering buying an Olympic White 60's Roadworn Strat. Actually that brings up one other complaint I have with the Roadworn series. The 50's and 60's models should have gotten different pickups. They both come with TexMex pickups. To get the 50's or 60's era pickups you have to buy the Classic line but they have a poly finish. Maybe I'll spring for an American Vintage series instead ?
    Good video btw.

    @superweak 5 лет назад +2

    I have a couple of those. They are great. I think the relicing has a practical purpose in that the neck feels so good compared to a “new” poly coated neck.

    I have a black 2008 50’s Roadworn. It’s the most comfortable guitar to play that I own. I think mine has more aging in the metal parts than your model. I’m guessing Fender made changes to the relicing.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar

    Hello Derek, nice vid mate, so I bought my 50's RW Strat back in 2015 ...for my 60th birthday, (named it "Leo") at the time I was under the impression that it was fashioned after the 1956 model year (my birth year) I'm into "vintage' gear...and it was very reasonably priced, it has since become my #1 ... sounds amazing played through my Blues Jr or Hot Rod Deluxe.
    My #2 is Fenders recent re-issue '54 style Blond Tele, but thats another story... lol....an interesting factoid that I discovered about this 50's style Strat, , the 'origina'l one was owned by the one & only Waddy Watchel ...there's great story behind it & It was featured in part of a Premier Guitar 'Rig Rundown with Waddy Watchel ...as turns out the original model was actually a 1957 Strat bought at George Gruhns Guitars in Nashville ...but no matter, it's a wonderful player & a joy to play, sounds amazing, looks & feels great all for around $1200 Cdn along with the nice gig bag ! ...I can tell it's put a spell on you just as it did me ! enjoy my friend...its get's even better over time with age ...enjoyed your review...thanks for posting it.

    It's really Not a "Mexican Stratocaster"! The Body, Neck, Bridge and Tuners are all AMERICAN. The Laquer body and neck are painted in Corona, CA. The only thing "Mexican" made are the Tex Mex pickups, which IMO are better than the USA Texas Specials. The switches and pots are Japanese, and the guitar is only ASSEMBLED in Mexico. If you really wanted to, you could replace the switch, pots and pickups with American ones, and you'd have a totally American Road Worn guitar. But IMO it wouldn't sound any better, or even as good.

      Please see this video, ruclips.net/video/SfphbU9d9lY/видео.html, go to 1:55. The EPA standards in Corona Calif. are too restrictive to make Road Worn's and sell them for under $1000.00. Also, Fender stopped making the nitro finished in Mexico after realizing that they were outselling the Custom Shop guitars around 2020.
