- The Marshall JMP MkII Super Bass is the best bang for the buck of any Marshall. In this clip We this amp with a number of vintage Marshall Greenback Cabs as well as Gibson Les Paul, SG, Flying V, Explorer and Fender Stratocaster. I also go through the circuit and mods that gives this amp it’s tone.
How does the components of a JMP contribute to tone?

Legend has it Johan has made his wife's Bosch vacuum cleaner sound like a hand wired Plexi..
🤣😂🤣
🤣😂😅😆
Rumor is that Johan’s middle name is ‘Plexium’
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Johan is just the coolest, most knowledgeable, likeable guitar dude on RUclips. And what a player.....
Thanks my friend, you make my day!
Sounds great!!! the guys at Marshall should be required to watch your videos just as a reminder.
Thanks my friend, that’s kind of you ;-)
They should have hired him as a consultant by now.
I can't get over how good that sounds with the strat! Beautiful tone all around.
Thanks Jordan!
I was going to say the same! This is truly a great amp. Good ears, Johan.
Everything sounds amazing. This guy never gets a bad tone. Its the room and his mics. Killing it!
lol so true
segeborn amplifiers has a nice ring to it.
Hahaha! Thanks man ;-)
You know what....that does actually
Do this Johan.
Great stuff, Johan. A pleasure to hear a fine old amp played by folks not afraid of treble.
wish nowadays recordings would sound like your videos ! just great
Thanks Max, I’m so glad to hear that!
You are probably the most knowledgeable Marshall guy I’ve ever heard. Very impressive and really cool licks you play! Great work!
Thanks man, I’m really glad to hear that!
Johan makes any plexi sound like a classic rock album!
Thanks my friend! :-)
That first riff you played with the Korina explorer... **head explodes** amazing!
Hahaha! You make my day man! :-)
Could you please please please compare the new *Marshall Origin* range of heads *vs. old plexis* (maybe with same vintage 12" cab)? I feel like you are THE man to do them justice.
Thanks :-) First chance I get!
Johan Segeborn looking forward to this!
The other guys might review them and twiddle something through them.... But I agree, the ONLY person to sound this ripped through those Marshalls is gonna be Johan! :-)
Sounds awesome , i had a super lead around the same era , they are wonderful amps and are loud enough for any situation.
Your playing is becoming very impressive. You could start a band and blow our planet away with some new chimes. Keep listening to your rock heros from the past and using the amps that can make it happen. People love this Johan ......cheers
That is a great sounding amp Johan, great playing too. Glad you are taking care of your ears. I've lost a lot of hearing in my right ear from playing over the years. Rock on.
Johan, that sounded awesome. I really loved the SG (I just love SG's) and the Strat. Really cool stuff.
Thanks! Yeah the SG pairs well with this amp
I have been an SG freak for years. To me they are the perfect guitar. Super light to strap on for a gig. Sound great with humbuckers or my favorite...P90 soapbars. They look the part..all evil with the devil "horns" and they fit any genre of music. Ive even seen & heard country pickers and jazzers light up an SG. The perfect guitar for a Marshall. And a blackface Fender for that matter. All the 60's American hippie bands played an SG through a blackface Fender tube amp.
Jeremiah Wilson Yep, they don't leave me, at 5' 9' ish all hunched over like an LP would at the end of the night. I always used my es175 or such for Jazz until I saw Robben Ford use one and his Tele too so I had a go and they play great on the neck pup of course. I use an Egnater now and while it's never the same I can switch between the 6v6 or the el34 power tubes and get a pretty good approximation between the U.S and the U.K sound. Really must learn some country though, those guys/girls really put the whole neck to work.
Epi Phone SG just stood out to me. Great sounding amp with all the guitars.
Yep, I agree the SG was awesome.
That full stack strat combo is a dream. I wish i had space to play that thang loud
The Great Marshall leads, but WoW the mids and lows are stunning sitting beautifully together- at times you would not think the sound is coming for the same amp !
Yeah together with those old greenbacks it gets a nice complex tone.
The low mids on these are lovely , mine makes the notes leap out and rub me tummy !!
Hope you can eventually try the upcoming Marshall Origin. Supposed to be based on a 2061. I want!
First chance I get! :-)
Ditto that request too!! Keep up the good work johan.
You cant always get what you want.
I completely agree with Johan. When I read the title of this clip I said to myself: late 70's JMP!
I like all Marshalls but these are special to me. I dropped my JMP to 50 watts (about) with 2 KT88's plugged into the 2 center positions. Aggressive with dynamics without a mod. Keep up the good work dudes.
Thanks man, glad to hear it! And KT88 are really cool tubes!
valentino0214 I may have to try that
That riff at 2:20 kind of sounds like Iron Maiden’s Two Minutes to Midnight,I mean you almost identically nailed the studio tone for the Power Slave album, I doubt if it was intentional, but still. Right on , great sounding amp.
Thanks man, I love Maiden!
I was going to comment the same thing! Pure "Two Minutes to Midnight" Marshall's tone.
I had a 1977 JMP MkII 50 watt head and 4x12 cab back in 1977. Bought it new for about $850.00 USD at the time. But back then we had no way to control the volume. It was either loud, or it was turned off and sitting in the corner. I can't tell you how many times I heard "turn it down". You can't turn it down. If you turn it down, it doesn't sound good at all. We didn't have power soaks back then. I wish I had it now.
At 1.51 I literally had to pause the video to make sure that the person playing was not Live at Pompeii-era Gilmour. As always, great demo, so gratifying!
Sounds absolutely awesome! Most “guitarists” miss out on what these amps can sound and being a fair bit cheaper
Thanks for all your videos you are by far the most realistic tester on you tube showing what the amps and guitars sound like without Reverb or a little tweak here and there which soooo many other channels do!
Thanks
Thanks Mark, it's really good to hear that!
Great sounding amp. SG just stood out. Loved the riffs too!
Thanks Mike! Great to hear it!
I was listening, but only half watching this video. Every time the SG was played I had to look over and see what guitar it was. The V sounded great too. Great video!
Thanks man!
I have used a mk2 super bass for over 25 years. Fantastic , as good as any I have ever heard.
Mine is older than yours I think , it has a square red power indicator , and toggles for on and standby rather than rocker switches.
77 was the best year for the Modern Marshall. i have a 77 JMP 50w Master Model MKII. to me the Master Model is the holy grail i have two of these heads a 77 and a 79 and the 77 is completely different than the 79. the 77 is has perfect breakup harmonics mids highs lows presence it has everything in perfect proportions. you can run the amp at all controls 12' oclock and its perfect. ive had filter caps and bias caps replaced that's it. i got my 77 in 1992 and i played that amp almost every day for about 15 years till i started using my dual 5150 rig. I still have this amp and it still sounds perfect.
I'm playing a 50 bass amp from ceritone now, makes pedals sound so good. Great amp. You got some great sounds there.
H i Johan, very much enjoy your videos. Proud owner of a mkII superlead 1976. Had it restored and build in mvmod. Played
It without the mod using powerattenuators. Without anything its sooo loud, atomic. I enjoy the amp most using a strat. Searching for THE guitar sound is a guitarist holy grail, i found it in my mkII. Keep making awesome video,s playing mountaintop rifs, thank you for sharing. Frans
that korina V sounds very good, I would love to hear it in future videos!
Thanks! I’m afraid I don’t still have it. I made a bunch of videos of it about a year ago though. Cheers
Good god that is an incredible beast! Love the sound of this. I think I know my next amp purchase...now to find one!
That is an awesome plexi tone. If I ever see one I will have to play through it.
Thanks for posting.
Its interesting how if you're looking for a vintage Plexi, and you're looking to get as a player as opposed to a collector you can get a Bass/Super bass for considerably cheaper. The mods to convert it to the Lead/Super Lead circuit is extremely easy (relatively speaking of course), and Super Bass to Super Lead is the same story.
But you can get another less known Plexi model, and for even LESS money, and it wi even more versatile than either the converted Super Bass or Lead (when I say Plexi, I'm using it to describe the guitar amp, I know the Super Bass from the era also considered Plexis). The late 60's P.A. amps, while being more rare, are none the less cheaper. They can be converted just as easy as the Bass or Lead. Plus it's an 8-input as opposed to the 4 of the guitar or Bass Plexis, so if you like modifying your gear you can do a few more things to it.
You have THE BEST riffs! Seriously good stuff!
Thanks, it's so good to hear that!
Finally! Somebody had the guts to say it.
Dude, I completely agree with you. I think the JMP MkII was the absolute pinnacle of Marshall amplification, for any kind of heavy rock/early metal sound. It just doesn't get better.
Yeah, so many of the classic hard rock albums were recorded with these amps
I used to have a really great JCM800 2204 modded to use NOS GE 6CA7s, and though it was aaaaalmost there, it never quite was at the level of the JMPs. Like I could get certainly a great tone, but I always found the Mark II to have a classic crunch that just couldn't be rivaled, whether by humbucker guitars or single coil.
I had a blast listening to the vid, mate. Thanks for posting it.
What a fountain of info you are, Johan. And that amp is magnificent. Great vid, mate.
Thanks Chris, glad to hear it!
Johan, you have good ears. John Frusciante from RHCP loves the Super Bass and used it on tour for them for years.
Thanks! I love his tone!
Good evening, Johan! Good video. Specialy V Korina was very beautifull. Thank you very much! Zigfrid
Good evening Zigfrid! Yeah that V has such nice lower mids. Cheers Johan
Every amp Johan uses is already a plexi!
Such an amazing tone!
Thanks Fransisco! That’s kind of you :-)
Well done Johan Segeborn, awsome video. Love that SG, sounds good.
Thanks Perica! Glad to hear it!
I already got one when they were cheap so I guess I can let these sleeper pawnshop gems out the bag...any original Traynor tube amp from the 60's or 70's. Pawnshops here in Michigan were loaded with old Traynors for next to nothing for a long time. Super easy to work on. Super easy to make a few slight mods for that plexi tone. And still sort of cheap compared to more well known brands. But people have caught on and they arent as cheap as they once were. They have this super amp tech/modder friendly "flip top" that exposes all the handwired top shelf components by removing 4 screws. The chassis is right there. Simple and genius. Every amp tech I talk to actually enjoys working on these. Any old Traynor tube amp model can sound exactly like a plexi with a few simple mods. The YBA..the little 20 watt YGM3...a bunch of models. I own a 1977 YGM3. 20 watt 1x12 combo Marshall killer. And ole Pete Traynor (recently passed R.I.P.) built these like tanks. Rugged..durable..and simple. Old Traynors are a working musicians dream amp and a tech/modders delight. Canadian musicians have kept these awesome amps a secret for a long time.
Yeah These are bound to go up in price
Wow, there´s my biggest regret, I had a 100W all tube Traynor-top from the early seventies, I foolishly let it go because I thought it was too heavy and too loud ...
edit. I also had a 70W Fender Bassman-top, much easier to OD than the Traynor and glorious OD too but no reverb of course. That's another regret.
Killer tones & cool riffs. The tech talk at the end is a bonus. U should build a custom, personal dream amp someday !!
Thanks man! Pleximaster built a custom 67-68ish 100W Plexi a while back. That’s still the benchmark for me. Check it out here:
ruclips.net/video/P8jHuBuawQU/видео.html
Johan Segeborn - Good tip, will watch that. Cheers!!
Johan Segeborn - Oh man, that Pleximaster sounds amazing !! Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that video.
Great tones guys! I think Johan popped out of the womb with the Marshall script logo printed on his backside 😉🎸👍
Hahaha! ;-) Thanks man
Just subscribed new favorite thing, best channel on RUclips!
Glad to.hear it, welcome to the channel!
If I got that Explorer tone I could stop chasing it!
Awesome video 👍😎👍
Thanks Ben! :-)
@@JohanSegeborn I know it's been a while, but what's the bridge pickup in that Explorer?
Great video. Love your work. I am learning a lot that I always wanted to know, and you expand my knowledge generally. Thank you!
Thanks man, that’s so good to hear!
Great video, as always. All of the musicians I play with or are personal friends are strict pickers; just plug in and play, they don't really care what they're playing. There are no gear heads, it's good to be reminded that I'm not alone lol.
I'm actually envious of them, I wish I was like them, to be satisfied with gear as long as it's playable and sounds decent. It would definitely be cheaper, and I wouldn't take it personally when my equipment isn't giving me what I want; like it's mocking me.
Ah, great video :)
I have myself a 1979 Superbass, that has been partially converted to superlead-specs before i bought it, similar to your ´77 model. It is the loudest 100W Marshall i ever witnessed, and it doesnt sound brown at all. It has a very tight and aggressive tone, but still very different to a 2203. I think the tolerances in the transformers were very large back then. Mine also has more gain than yours (that may depend on the preamp-tubes, i have some NOS ecc83 in the preamp). But i love it :)
I’m so glad to hear this video. Because I’ve come to really like Super Bass tone, but I always assumed they were the same price as Super Lead...I want to get one some day.
Glad to hear it. It’s the MkII (1974-) that’s cheaper than the MkI Plexis (1960s) though. Superbass and Superlead are usually about the same price. Super leads are a little more expensive. Cheers
Nice work Johan! Love the sound through the Epi Korina V and the SG, myself!
Glad to hear that, thanks!
How wild, I owned the spot-on same amp back in 1978! I ran a Rickenbacker 4001 & Rick-O-Sound kit to fine tune the balance between the pickups. I ran it through a Marshall 4x12. Perfect for the Chris Squire tone.
While I've owned a million amps over the years, that's one of the few that I wish I'd hung on to instead of letting it get away. I've always missed that amp... sigh!
Yeah this one’s a keeper indeed. Cheers
I have been thinking about getting a plexi kit, I have heard great things about them, and from what I have been told they are all relatively have the same high quality. They are the same schematics, and they are all point to point wiring.
Oh DAM YEAH EXPLORER..SOUNDS AWESOME AND THE FLYING V..I LOVE THAT RIFF. STRAT SOUNDS WILD..GOOD JOB
Hi Johan, I hope you're gonna compare the new Marshall Origin 20H or 50H with some old JTM/Bluesbreaker/Plexi... since they look to be in that "tone ballpark". I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear that :)
He will be the only guy I trust demoing this amp.
First chance I get! :-)
Thanks man :-)
Johan Segeborn awesome! I would say to try the 20W because that's the one I'm personally interested in (I know, very selfish from me)
Fingers crossed
The Explorer, V and SG sound killer. I have adopted one of each and a Les Paul running thru a Laney AOR Pro Tube Lead 50 and a Marshall DSL 100. The Laney needs some work on the tone circuit, but it’s got IT for me. Would like to see some of your videos on Laneys from the beginning to the 90’s. Great riffs!
Thanks Johan for the information. You are doing a great and very useful job. Very useful video.
Ear candy at 4:15. Love your reviews!
Thanks, great to hear that! :-)
The info/knowledge is superb (I've literally just ponied up for a marshall dsl40crd based on one of your videos...I'll be shoe-horning a 15" Celestion fullback into it too!)...but I find myself tuning in just as much nowadays for the killer riffs!
That 71’ 1960A sounds so Sabbath. It’s incredible.
Always interesting watching your videos Johan. Thank You! Keep it up.
Strats and Marshalls sound so great
that SG sounded great with that amp,, the LP r9 at the end was doing good things also.
Great sound, Great info on the amp mods, hell of a Job sir!
Thanks my friend!
Johan Segeborn 👍
Shit!! Sold my Super Bass in the mid 90s..still kicking myself Johan, miss that sound.
Your method of doing the content and the quality of it.. I've never seen anything on the same level or even close. Absolutely top-notch as always! If I may suggest a theme for a video, could you do one about the small marshall tube amps and show us mortal what can be gotten out of the SL-5, Class 5, DSL-5, Haze and other "practice amps"? Decibels too? I run an SL-5 into a 4x12 loaded with v30 and G12H30.. such an amazing sound. I got the 4x12 and the greenbacks because of your demos by the way :) Another curiousity, the 4x12 I bought is from ~1983, it is a slant cab on the outside, but it actually has a straight baffle board!? Also, the front fabric is brown all over. Might be a different sound than either normal 1960a or 1960b... ;)
Thanks my friend, I'm so glad to hear that! For some of the vintages in the mid 80s the black grill cloth faded to brown over time. Cheers
This really looks like it is a paper weave in wheat color, not faded. I found an identical one in reverb:
reverb.com/item/373566-marshall-1960a-slant-4x12-cabinet-1985
And to make it even more special, the baffle board is totally straight, no cut, no inner horizontal brace at all. The cloth is not glued to the baffle, just goes over a brace to create the look of an angled cab. I don't like the 1960a sound dispersion at all so this is a perfect cab for me.. even I am a bit vintage and odd.
As a self professed Gibson guy, I sometimes forget how AMAZING a good Strat sounds on the neck pickup through an old Plexi!
Thanks!
Awesome video Johan. Very informative.
Never a disappointing video, thanks for all you do.
Really good to hear that!
Gotta love that strat tone! Also that tone with the SG around 2:19 was very Randy Rhoads-ish!
Thanks, glad you like it! :-)
If Jim Marshall was alive, he would be subscribed to this channel!
5:17 is the moment of perfect sound...I mean among other perfect Marshall sounds :)
You make my day my friend!
You can make an etch n sketch sound like a plexi! Rock on!
Thanks Patrik, rock on my friend!
4:50 is THE tone for Hells Bells!!
Great to hear that! Cheers
I played an old marshall super bass that had been modded and it was freakin sweet!!
Yeah, the sweet spot lies somewhere between super lead and Superbass to me
damn Johan, I thought my Superbass fever was over! You're not helping my gas with this vid! ;) great as usual!
Hahaha! Sorry about that ;-)
Do you have stereo room mics on these? Are there different rooms? Is there also post reverb on the room mics?
I wondered if it is the single mic we see on the cab plus some 'created' stereo image and a touch of added medium hall reverb to get that pre-delay and silkiness you wouldn't get in a typical home.
Whatever they did it sweetens the sound without stepping on it, you can still hear the amp very clearly.
Yeah, could be...not sure
I have a 70's supper bass you are right it is a great Marshall. I see you use a THD to attenuate the volume. You should try a Fulltone OCD some how it becomes a master volume when you plug it in the front of the amp it works great to get a full Marshall tone at bedroom levels
Same signature (Shirley) as in my '78 JMP Super Lead 100W at 03:30. Sounds awesome.
So nice. Love my 77 MKII with 6550's.
Thanks Jj!
Some killer tones there. And boss licks. Who is the dude with the black jeans and white t-shirt?
That's Simon Karlsson, he plays most of the Strats here at the channel. Cheers
Your videos are incredible. Rock on!
Both the Epi Explorer and the Epi V sound killer. Currently awaiting the arrival of the Epi Joe Bonamassa 1958 Korina Amos V here to the house.
Cool, I loved the Bonamassa Firebird 1
As always great Video Johan!
Thanks Chris!
Great sound as always Johan. I have a question for you. I'm looking for something fairly light and low wattage to work on some sixties tones like old Zeppelin, but I do play a little country too. I'm really liking what I have heard of the Marshall Origin 20, the DSL, but I also like 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb remake (I see a good deal on these every now and then). Which of these would you prefer, or do you have any good ideas somewhere between 500 and 700 dollars? Any advice?
johan thumbs🙏 as usual bro. man plz out an eq in the loop and push 1st bass lever all the way up and build tone from there. it feels like a rap subwoofer at the same time as a guitar amp married a car woofer sub system it actually punches. and what speaker do u think is a good mate with a Celestron alnico gold. i cant say enuf about the warmth and smooth percussive bass and complex midrange. and ur groove time kills it buddy so hard. i always cut ur riffs on when i try get little house work done. totally motivates me cuz i cant wait to grab my guitar.
Thanks my friend! I’m gonna try that EQ trick!
Johan Segeborn prepare to be amazed. only in the fx loop. thx my friend . \m/
The Marshall JMP Mk II are probably my favorite Marshall, had that classic sound to a T. Personally like the "rocker" black and red switches aesthically and the hi and lo sensitivity input models. Used by my favorite bands or artists, AC/DC, Mötorhead, Led Zeppelin later, and a few others as well.
Yeah the 77 Master Volumes are great too
oddly enough, I have a 2203 from 1981 and on the sticker, I also have 'Shirley' as a signature. Seems like a small world.
I wonder if that's how Friedman came up with the name for the Dirty Shirley?
Man, your korina Explorer and Flying V sound great.
Another great video! I own a mint condition 74, all original with the same mullards still in, its pushing just over 160w! Prefer it to the superlead!
Thanks Alfie!
Great vid. Thanks for the specs and explanation
Thanks man!
The 1982A and 1982B cabs sounded better to my ears than the 1960 cabs. They pair well with this MkII. You should run them together as a full stack!
Thanks!
Love that strat and plexi Johan!
Thanks man, yeah that’s great punchy tone. Especially with Simon’s playing style.
Get ready to laugh, but I thought that Korina epi V sounded the best out of all of the guitars through that rig. Normally I just dont like epiphones... is that real Limba wood, or just mahogany with a clear finish to make it look like Korina?
Good Lord. Beautiful tones.
Powerful tones. I like it.
Thanks man!
In my opiniont the Jmp is the best vintage Marshall you can get. This is amp is wonderful
Yeah, it’s my fav too! Cheers
i have a 76 JMP mkII lead and it sounds incredible! and was cheap too
Cool, I'm gonna use a 76 Superlead in tomorrows clip
Johan Segeborn ive been waiting! It's hard to find videos on that amp.
Johan the master of Marshall mojo! Get it Man! .... wow!
Thanks bro! :-)
Love this video, thank you! Will you do a review on the New studio series? Just got the studio vintage head, and it sounds awesome. Cheers 😊
Johan, great video as always, but I'm curious about one thing. Some of the clips were recorded on bedroom level, but this amp has no master volume and you didn't say there was a master volume mod done to it, could you please explain how that worked? An attenuator?
