But a question: the instrumentalists, in our current way of playing Baroque style, uses little to no vibrato. But the soprano uses a lot of vibrato. I'm having trouble keeping these together. Any reasons for this?

My God , how boring !! No Colors, no Sound, the Vibrato is out of Style, Chest Register is missing, Technique of Singing is missing too, nothing is at the right place , it’s a horrible rendition .... Baroque is something else !!!
Perhaps you could listen to the sheer panache and extraordinary beauty of this singing (and accompaniment) rather than attempt to demonstrate your knowledge of 'technique'. Veronique Gens is one of the finest singers of her generation in a range extending from baroque to 20 century music.
Mel Cadman that’s your opinion . In my opinions she has many technical problems ! For example : listen to her HORRIBLE SCREAMING at the End of her Recitativo at the Minute 17.05 (the last word) !! She screams it like an eagle : THIS IS NOT VERISMO !!! THIS IS NOT “SANTUZZA” !!! Furthermore , nowadays there many other Baroque Singers better the her , performing BAROQUE REPERTOIRE in a perfect STYLE . Do you know their Names ?? You should ....
