A quick translation of the french introduction of the concert by Jordi Savall : "Good evening ladies and gentlemen, dear friends. This concert is dedicated to Caravaggio, of course but also to Montserrat Figueras. She has been with us for a lot of years. She continues to be among us, with all her spirit. YESSSS. It's funny to see how some of our most revered composers (and artists...) were undervalued in their time, usually for seeming "too old-fashioned" or "too weird". Of course, years later, fashion from the bygone eras stops mattering, and the quality of old music reveals itself. I'd love to see what will be valued from this scattered age of music, assuming the planet survives.
@@nocomment2468 I think we come across absolute perfection in so many musical performances and in so many genres, that one lifetime isn't enough to experience more than a tiny fraction! I fell in love with Jordi Savall's music when I was about 12. Seriously, the fact that he exists to preserve this music and these instruments and styles is a serious gift to the world. It got me through middle school.
I discovered this music when I was 16. And this music led me until I discovered Dead can Dance in my 19. I am happy that I have internet and listen it wherever I am.

When I wanted to listen to early music, I usually wind up listening to Jordi Savall. His understanding of this music is rarely matched. However, i had never heard Ferran sing before this video. Within two bars, I was automatically transported to North Africa, where I had worked for 4 years. I could see within my mind's eye the sands of the Sahara, the palm trees quietly swaying in the wind and the call to prayers from the nearby mosques carried though the atmosphere. There is such a spirituality in his voice. You just don't want it finish!

Thank you for posting this gorgeous concert! Jordi Savall is an international treasure. He and the artists with whom he surrounds himself are all extraordinarily gifted, and committed not just to "historically informed performance", but historically IMMERSED performance. Many pieces in this concert were written by Jordi Savall, and if they weren't labeled, one would hardly know that they did not originate in the distant past. His "Deploratio" pieces, sung by their son Ferran Savall, are truly a "bewailing", lamentations for his late collaborator, partner, and wife Montserrat Figueras, to whom this concert is dedicated.

Jordi Savall has performed a great service to the entire world in reviving interest in the viola da gamba and the music of the time in which it flourished, the 16th through 17th Centuries. He has championed the instrument, and its wonderfully sonorous sound, in a variety of musical styles, throughout his long career. A wonderful musician!

it's been a week since I discovered this video, but I can't help myself but listen to it multiple times a day. I'm so utterly entranced by the atmosphere these stellar musicians create in these 1,5 hours. I find myself experiencing emotions I didn't know I could feel, it taps into something so deep and ancient... the respect that these artists have for the works is also extremely tangible, and is audible in every note they play. It's incredible how music lives on and is revived throughout history, and these men have certainly done so with every piece they lay their hands on.
I love how this kind of music, although it has tremendously skilled practitioners, isn't about "stars". There's a humility about it, a recognition that it's all about the whole performance. You could say that about any orchestral piece, but I think it's particularly true about this style and period of music.

This most beautiful concert was performed exquisitely at 2012 but its lamentation-mood pieces fit perfect for the memory of the Corona's dead, nowadays 2020. Thanks for uploading.
@@aliveli-hq6zk No, on its whole, it is full of "Tears" ("Lachrimae") and many of the pieces are in sad mood, although there are also here and there pieces with life and joy - as Jordi Savall himself said in his introduction (in French) - but the main mood of most of the pieces is that of mourning (for ex.: Deploratio in Latin means "lamenting", "Spiritus Morientis" in Latin, which is "Last Dying Breath", "Dolorosa" which is "Grieving". etc.). You can see all of the pieces (many composed by composers who were living around Caravaggio's time) in the info. section, in some of the pieces' titles. In addition, the mourning voice of Jordi Savall's son: Ferran Savall, which appears in-between the pieces (for ex.: at 10:50, at 25:29 etc.).
My love for this gorgeous music and the musicians who touch us through sound...reignited love. Thank you for what you do for me and for this world. Humanity survives because of such beauty.
Even if Europe gave posterity nothing else but its musical treasury it would still surpass all other regions of the world in artistic genius. Long live Europe and long live Jordi Savall and his Baroque-inspired mates..
A beautiful tribute to a loved one. For me personally Maestro Savall will do no wrong - such is his talent, love of music and desire to play it. The lineup of musicians to play with him here is just amazing - real masters of their craft and instrument. But the outstanding heartwrenching vocal performance here is by Ferran Savall - son of Jordi Savall and Monserrat Figueros, dedicatee of the concert. Listening to his wordless lament leaves me choked every time I listen to it. That is why I can't listen that concert often. Still it is as fantatstic as anything Maestro Savall does - authentic, thoughtful, musically superb and emotionally charged. Bravi.

@@wolkowy1 Those "Lachrimae" are of joy my friend... of joy...
Dios ...q maravilla
Great, brilliant Jordi Savall and amazing members of his orchestra, creating light and beauty in the European Art!!!!!!
JORDI ET CARRAVAGGIO ALORS LÀ ON EST DANS L’EXCELLENCE 👏👏👏👏👏
MERVEILLEUX ENSEMBLE BAROQUE ....MERCI MAITRE SAVALL
Bravi.
Sitting a vigil at the present but this is surprisingly comforting. Has a calmness I suppose which we need. DeeDee
Merci Ferran Savall. Quelle voix magnifique vous avez! Enchanteresque! Etherée, divine!
Magnifique musique d'une spiritualité qui me touche l'âme! Merci!!!

a mi igual **ufff**
@@_nastymorg4n Aquí de vuelta, a volverlo a escuchar. :)
...sublime! And this male lament - deploratio is the earth's crying from within....
Beauty, beauty, calls to our souls! Dear Monserrat, we will miss you, but your family and friends continue the great singing.
