TIP from a fellow Gout sufferer. Treat gout as a food allergy. Keep a diary of the things you eat and identify your triggers. I found mine to be ''wholemeal products'' such as wholemeal bread/biscuits/cookies/pasta and meat products that use bread crumbs as a filler. (burgers and sausages). I eliminated these from my diet and have been pain free for over two years. I am no expert, just a fellow sufferer and this worked for me. Stay safe and well people.

I had my first gout attack in early February. I had no idea what it was. Went to urgent care where they diagnosed a "classic" case of gout. They prescribed pregnazone (sp?) and an antibiotic. Limped into the local CVS to pick up my prescription and then went to my PCP. She wasn't so sure it was gout, but it flared up again about two days ago. I think it's gout.
In any case, I like that you give straight up information without trying to sell me any dubious supplements like many others do. We need more of what you're doing. Keep up the good work. It's a genuine public service.

Gout in the ankle is by far the worst pain i have had with my history with gout. I’m taking Allopurinol, naproxen sodium and even colchicine (twice daily) and it’s been going on for over one week!! In this time- I have not had any sugars, cokes, frozen foods, anything purine rich and with pork, red meats, fish, etc. I hope their is better medicines eventually because one week of this pain is excruciating 😖

I have been getting gout for around ten years, it started in my big toe and now travels all over my feet. My doctor told me recently that I was pre renal disease and my uric acid levels were high so I started dieting. I didn’t eat any sugar or fats and I’m a vegetarian. That diet turned into the longest bout of Gout I have ever had. I honestly don’t think there is anything you can take or do to stop it, I still get gout regardless of my diet.

Allopurinol never worked for me either. Even with copious amounts of water. Ibuprofen was also useless as a pain killer. My Doctor put me on Colchicene and this was the winner. I am gout free now, after suffering for many years. I take 2 colchicene pills now per day, one in the morning and one at night and l drink lots of bottled water
      The still variety. Take care.

Thank you for explaining everything so clearly, i will adjust my diet accirdingly.

Advice from a gout sufferer: treat the disease like diabetes. Cut the sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup as well as carbohydrates like bread, fruit, corn and rice. Berries are OK. Meat or seafood does not cause it for me. A glass or two of red wine every couple of nights when there are no symptoms also helps along with morning coffee. I eat high fat diets to keep away hunger and reduce insulin. I call it type 3 diabetes.

I've been battling gout lately, due to taking aspirin (enterically coated, low dose). This has made it hard for my kidneys to excrete uric acid. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, had aortic valve replacement in August 2019 (I have mechanical valve now). 1st day off the aspirin and starting to feel better.

You are very informative about gout, I’ve just started having these attacks, they are very painful. I have diabetes also, I really worry about the kidney, they’re already in bad shape. But I have been drinking a lot of soda, and sweets, I just crave them, really bad. Sense I have had to stay home for so long, I guess I’m depressed can hardly get around. I’ve gained weight, I don’t eat regular meals just something to make the stomach not hurt, like a few cookies. But I ate some imitation crab, put a little butter and garlic salt , warmed it up, so good. But my foot swelled like a balloon and so painful, really hurts across the top of foot, the swelling feels so tight, not even a feather can touch it., but I just had a goat attack last week,so I had no idea I was having another one, the only thing is the big toe is not hurting as bad as usual, the pain is across the top of my foot.it hurts so bad . My dr called a script, for colchicine , but only 3 tiny pills, the second day it was much better, I also take allopurinol which is to help. Thank you for giving much needed information on this, you were very helpful, God Bless, 😊💕

Thank you very much for the wonderful video, Sarah! Very useful information. There is no history of gout in my family. I'll be modifying my diet after viewing your video; I don't drink any form of alcohol, but I'll be drinking more water to eliminate those issues, or at the very least lower the severity of those acute bouts. One question for you: what sort of test should I ask a healthcare practitioner to prescribe to monitor my uric acid level if I go to see him?

About 2 years ago my doctor ordered a blood survey on my behalf and the news was that I had gout, based on the blood test. I have been in pain every waking hour since then.
Sometimes the pain is `not good,` but most of the time it feels like I`m being crushed by a pressing machine.
Do, my fellows, whatever it is you have to do to avoid gout. By the way, I`m English and ergo don`t even have to worry about the cost of the numerous drugs I`m being prescribed in order to treat this work of the Devil.
Ps, I used to be an RGN.
I have absolutely no idea who the Nurse in this video is but have no doubt that she would be an asset to the Student Body over here - and to our patients.

I'm honestly not even sure that I have the words to thank you for sharing this knowledge. I had a terrible gout attack while I was stationed in Alaska a few years ago but the Army and Air Force doctors didn't have a clue. Now, I realize that it was due to my game meat and alcohol consumption. I felt the same sharp pain, in my throat but it felt like glass, rather than sand. I started piecing things together after finding out that I have it in my family. Hopefully, I pass the quiz. Changing my diet now. . . Moving forward I can only assume that my lack of a proper diagnosis after all this time, is partially due to race. Tophi is definitely a new term for me but I've had those, as well. Smh

When I was 29 years old one morning I woke up with excruciating pain in my big toe. I honestly thought I had broken my toe. And the doctors thought I had broken my toe the way I was limping and in so much pain they did an x-ray and turned out it was gout ! I said I'm not a medical expert I've never heard of gout before. The doctor said it was quite rare for somebody my age to get it that's why they had thought I had also broken my toe. I'm now 34 and I get gout attacks once or twice a year. A lot of people don't understand how painful and attack is and they think you're just playing it up so you can get time off work. I have actually broken a bone and I would say my gout attacks are twice as painful! Thank you for your informative video

Hi, thanks for this very informative video! My mother is 101 years old and is suffering from her first gout attack. She has neutropenia & osteoporosis. She needs blood transfusions fairly often. Her doctors said they can’t give her any of the medicines usually prescribed for gout because of her other conditions. She is allergic to pain meds & can only take 8Hr Tylenol (no codiene). How much water does she need daily? She weighs 115 lbs. Also, besides elevating her foot & using ice & heat, is there anything else we can do to quell the pain & suffering? She can barely walk but she really can’t stay in bed all day and risk contracting pneumonia. Thank you for any advice you can give🙏🥰

My doc prescribed Colchicine and Indomethacin together, and they work like wonder drugs. I use them for acute attacks and the gout settles down in 2-3 days (it's an 8-day regimen). My triggers are shellfish (vs. seafood, I can safely eat most fish...eat one shrimp and I'm dead meat), too much pork, and too much meat in general.
Hope this helps my gout peeps! 😄

I LOVE watching Sarah's videos! They really help me get a better understanding of the content no that all my nursing classes are online due to the virus! I'm able to piece everything together! Also, I had no idea that "sweet bread" was an organ meat! It literally took me for a spin! Ive heard it mentioned before and thought wow that is weird they are putting bread with meats lol! Makes much more since now!

    What do you mean "toxicity"
I was just diagnosed with acute gout in my right foot from the ER. That was two days ago. Now I am having tingling numbness in my big toe in the left foot and I'm nervous that means that foot is about to flare up as well. I've tried doing some reasereach on that specifically but can't find it. Your video has been quite informative. I am working on getting an appointment with an orthopedic but that'll take a moment so I'm trying to educate myself while I'm going thru literally the most painful thing I've ever experienced in my life, thus far.

Thank you so much. I was doing everything right, but wrong. I take beef organ supplements, pancreas, kidney I eat lots of seafoods. I take mushroom supplements and eat mushrooms. I take high vitamin C. My family decided to do the all meat diet. I’m under stress, and don’t sleep well. No wonder I ended up with gout. Thank you for the information. I would’ve never thought about the beef organs and mushrooms.

Thank-you, Sarah. Still reviewing and its interesting to note about the high fructose corn syrup...hubby use to drink a lot of Coke. He is down to maybe one 2L a week. May explain why he only had gout the one time. ~ Jeanne

Great video!! The drawings, notes, and medications were well done! Accuracy is what is vital when delivering nursing info..and you do it with such finese! The material made for a good review..this was introduced in Level 1 (Fundamentals )..Aug 14th starts Level 2!! I am excited mixed with a little nervousness. .This is a challenging journey..to say the least! I feel just completing the nursing course should automatically grant the person a license! :-) a little nursing school humor! !

Thank you so much :) You got to have some humor to make it through it haha. I totally agree that nursing courses themselves should be good enough for a license lol! Best wishes on August 14th! Enjoy the rest of your break :)
