Captain Calamity (1936) [Action] [Adventure] [Crime]

"Captain Calamity" is an American South Seas adventure film directed by John Reinhardt and starring George Houston released by Grand National Pictures. It was filmed in an early color process called Hirlicolor at Talisman Studios and Santa Catalina Island, California.
A penniless ship's captain is taking a passenger ashore after their voyage. The passenger throws a gold coin in the ocean that he says has been bad luck to him as it was a gift from his ex-fiancee. The Captain sends one of his men, an experienced underwater diver, to successfully retrieve it. The passenger explains that is a gold Spanish doubloon and the Captain is more than welcome to it.
Going ashore, the Captain decides to have some fun by telling stories indicating that he discovered four chests full of the coins, which were pirate treasure. The news spreads throughout the island and leads to kidnapping, torture, murder and an attack on the Captain's ship.

Crane Wilbur was also a screenwriter. His credits include many silent films and later, movies like HOUSE OF WAX (1953), CANON CITY (1948), and MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1961), amongst many others. He was an actor in many silent films, but only a handful of sound films. He also directed nearly 40 features and shorts, although most are not really well known. Also, the color is quite good for what I believe was only a two-color process akin to Cinecolor, but surely looks better than process or even two-strip Technicolor. I have seen it described in prints as "Hurllicolor" (or "Hurlacolor"), or "Prints processed by Magnacolor."I have seen several different transfers of this film on video. All are transferred from war-battered prints with many splices. In many cases, you can't even edit together a complete version from all the prints to repair the sections with missing frames. This really hurts in the musical portions. I just wish one more film print would turn up somewhere that was in better condition.
