  • ICYMI Stephen Colbert rides a bloody nice horse to demonstrate dressage, I'm jealous after all my years of riding I've never piaffed, probably because I’m not very good 😆
    Loved this! 😄

Stephen Colbert , thank you so much for doing this video! We miss your show. I have been watching archived shows but of course there is nothing like the present, but I understand that a writers strike is unavoidable. I hope you are having a great summer ! I lived in Upper Montclair for 18 years.

Michael Baritone was a great sport and a patient teacher. To his credit, Stephen Colbert rode a pretty big spook and didn't even lose a stirrup. For those who wonder why Conchita is in a double bridle with a beginner, she is (obviously) an FEI horse probably in her daily attire. For most horses to attain the highest degree of collection, piaffe, both bits are necessary. If you look closely, the curb rein is knotted on her neck and Stephen is only holding the snaffle. I wouldn't really call it a passage (not airy enough) but a working/training piaffe. Stephen is not capable of sitting deeply or correctly enough to attain the collection of an "on the place" true piaffe. So Michael doesn't even ask for one. All three get kudos for being good sports.

This is one of my favorites!
    UPDATE VIEWING WARNING!!!
It is recommended that you not to be sipping a lovely dry rose while watching this video! The wine might accidentally go right back up your nose as you watch the first few minutes. Also some incontinence may occur. Fitful coughing might ensue. Also laughter until you cry is a possibility.

I can't believe they threw a double bridle on her for him to ride. The spook was pretty epic though, he did a good job of sitting it :D

Lets all appreciate how the trainer caught the horse as she spun. Bless haha my horse did that to me in front of my trainer, the difference was she laughed at me as I tried to right myself and my horse kept walking

@3:38 the tiara under the hat! Nothing to do with dressage, but Anthony Valentine did that same trick in the 1977 tv series "Raffles"! :)

Stephen Colbert is so great. He can ride, and he can dance (see the daf punk video). My horses would have fun with him paiffing on them. Well, not paiffing, he'd have to wear a diaper.

Sam French: if you would ride Lipizzaners you would find yourself piaffing weather you want it or not:-)
It's their natural manner when they are healthy and in a good (or bad; everything but depressed) mood. The hardest thing in dressage is to teach a Lipizzaner to WALK in front of the audience. Most Lipizzaners fail in walk and never win in champioship.

I don't think Steve Colbert did a favor to this sport/art in this video. I think dressage needs a more militaristic form that more openly displays the tactical benefit that dressage used to offer in warfare. Then and only then will Americans respect it. Americans understand things that go boom, that collide together and make big smashing sounds. I'm afraid the sport is a little too subtle for the crass American public.
