I have driven trucks for a lot of my life and i like other truck drivers would not have any trouble driving these vehicles. It is because most people are used to driving small to medium vehicles that most people consider them huge. Take one for a drive and you will be pleasently surprised. Maybe not in and underground car park which are far too tight for the current crop of vehicles.
Found this review of a vehicle such as this completely fascinating. Find them a menace on the road and don't understand it's need in an urban area though...
The F150 is the entry level of full size pickups. We have a class above the full size called large pickup truck (8,500 to 14,000 lb GVM/GVWR). In Ford terms that would be F250 to F450 pickups. They aren't difficult to deal with anywhere but the most dense urban areas. I have driven a Ram 2500 through Manhattan many times and the only issue is that you need to reserve a parking space ahead of time.
My F450 crew cab fits in my garage. Also, the LWB F150 would be a short bed in the larger pickups. The 5.5 foot bed is not available in larger pickups and the 8' crew cab configuration is not available in half tons like the F150.
Surprised you could have one long enough for a road test between recalls and stop sale. Edit, ok still on stop sale then. Good luck to anyone who thinks spending A$120k+ on a re manufactured Ford is a good idea…
Good review I rekn . But fairdinkum , how are the dreamers on here that have absolutely no intention of getting one of these or anything like it ! not everyone is broke living in a suburb & driving a used Prius .
I drove a 2WD eco boost in the US & it’s almost impossible to stop the rear wheels spinning under acceleration. Permanent 4WD would make it much better
While I get convinced by local jobs created, knowing the ute market segment very well, why these Utes aren't factory made for RHD market and keep the costs down by 30 to 40% and give a choice for buyers to select between an Asian and north American Ute?
$151,000!!!! Who is affording that?!? Most Aussie households would not spend that amount on 2 vehicles (yes I admit this is a specialised vehicle built for a purpose)
At that GVWR it would be a class 3 truck (Dodge offered several variants with different GVM/GVWR in 1977). The current Ford equivalent is the F350. The F150 is a class 2A.
These things (as does the RAM and the Tundra, and to a lesser extent the midsize utes) represent a disproportionate risk to pedestrians and drivers of other cars because of their weight, bonnet height, and consequent blind spot. Think very long and hard about that before you consider buying one.
Like you Tom,I'm really surprised the F150 is that good. But you said it's good value at $140k on road compared to a smaller duel cab ute at $80k on road. That's $60k better value? It would have to be nearly twice as good to achieve that, so unless there's a reason for needing a bigger truck, I can't see the value equation works.
I meant it in a relative way - this truck at $140K is better value than a regular 4x4 dual-cab ute at $80K (which I see as very overpriced for the simple, agricultural vehicles they are). You can certainly still think $140K is a lot of money for the Ford, and I do.
Nice truck with some great features, but the deal breaker for me, is no diesel engine. It just defies any logic for a large truck that specific’s purpose is for heavy towing. An equivalent size twin turbo diesel engine would’ve more torque down low where needed & more importantly, far superior fuel economy. The 10 speed auto would be the perfect match for a diesel engine. Hate to see what the fuel economy is on that petrol engine when towing.
obviously you have no idea what you are talking about the 3.5 ecoboost puts out 450nm at 1500rpm and 575nm at 2000rpm ford had a 3L turbo diesel 10speed auto the exact same powertrain used in the ranger now in the F150 from 2018 to 2020 it was a sales disaster why have a stinking unrefined oil burner when the ecoboost destroyed it in every way people caught onto that pretty quick in the states and if you can afford any new car sold today you can pay for the fuel it requires i hate how people act like diesels don't burn a shit load more fuel towing
The issue is that the F150 is too small to make it into the more diesel friendly regulations that the EPA imposes on vehicles over 8,500 lb GVWR/GVM. The F250 and up all offer diesels, but don't expect twin turbo. Almost all diesel sales in the US and Canada are vehicles above 8,500 lb GVWR/GVM. The standard output F250 diesel makes 475 hp and 1,050 lb ft/1,425 nm of torque and the High Output makes 500 hp and 1,200 lb ft/1,630 nm. Both are mated to a 10 speed auto.
All i can say is, ive had landcruisers since the early 1980s. Ive owned every model. (Got a lovely fj45 as you can see in my profile pic), had a 300- hated it. I retired from the auction industry last year (and was toyota australias auctioneer), for the first time a f150 is on my radar. I tow horse floats, want comfort and think toyota is taking the piss out of us with the hilux/70 combo….
Just not for Australian cities … too big and too expensive. Unless you have a farm and need this size and power. I’d prefer a smaller footprint but with V6 or V8 engine.
who can afford this thing? a 40K car is roughly $1000/month financed. what is 150K per month? I wish these 'car review' channels would do some "this is a rough monthly finance cost". i have this f150 around 4000/month which is roughly a ^70k salary take home pay. so you'd need to be on 200K plus to realistically even think abou it - am i missing something?
same for houses. people buy $2m homes that by all calculators require gross salaries over 500k to justify but of course they do not have that income. They use a windfall. they use a business write off. etc
Not worth it, they have too many problems to be paying that much money. If you could easily get 300,000 mi out of it it would be worth it but you'll be lucky to get 100,000 miles before a major repair.
I have one. Had it for a few years now and it is easily the best car on the road. It is the American version and has the best trim and features. I can’t understand naysayers saying they should be taxed out of existence. Jealousy. Most other cars in Australia can’t tow much. Mine is fantastic. And anyone who advocates allowing Albanese to ban them is an idiotic moron. Albanese has stuffed up everything he touches. And is sending Aus broke.
If you look at the numbers, a Landcruiser isnt much wider. Car parks get built now for maximum capacity. Even a commodore is painful in many car parks now

Best car I’ve ever owned. I live in regional Oz and it’s perfect. Why are people talking about driving them in the city?
Because most Australians don't live in regional Australia, and a considerable share of people purchasing F-150s live in greater metropolitan areas

The question should be can you live in one of these utes it was not so long ago in most parts you could have bought a house for that price.

same price as a landcruiser
Well, considering the mechanical issues the Tundra is having in the US, this would be the large ute choice here in Aus
My '77 Dodge D5N fits a 6500kg GVM and 9000kg GCM into the same wheelbase and 6.2m length! Lot less power and cabin space though...

I just wish they would make it in RHD from the ford factory. Can’t stand it when the can’t be bothered to spend a few $$ to make stuff RHD.

A high spec Land cruiser is $150 k and it is dual. A “duel “ is a competition between two people with the use of deadly weapons.

You have to move to a F250 or above to get a diesel. EPA regs in the states make diesels difficult in smaller vehicles.
Petrol makes no sense in this vehicle, crazy!
Tell the EPA. The F150 is too small to make a diesel viable in the US.
