The most huanted house I've ever been in was one my family was looking to rent just outside of Kansas City, Kansas. I don't remember what tiny little town it was now, but the home had belonged to a wealthy, single doctor, who supposedly had a connection to the Bloody Benders. He'd settled closer to the populated portion of Kansas after the Benders disappeared and built the home. I've never seen - or felt - anything like it. It was a huge, old, antebellum brick home and it was absolutely beautiful. It was also dirt cheap, and the realtor who was also the leasing agent actually made us sign a document stating that we'd been notified the house was "extremely haunted" prior to viewing it. The moment you walked in, the air was heavy and amost felt electrically charged, somehow. Shadows moved everywhere, creaks snd and other noises were constant, and you constantly caught movement just outside your line of vision. It was something else. The last straw for me was when we were standing outside the back and looking up into one of the windows, where we clearly saw someone's hand and part of their arm pull back the curtain, saw the curtain hang in the air for a few seconds, and then saw it drop and settle back into place. We all looked around for a second to see who had been up there, and then we realized that all of us, including the leasing agent, were outside together when it had happened. We left almost immediately. I'm an avid ghost hunter, so not a lot scares me. That house was, with one notable exception on Lexington, Missouri, the scariest and most negative place I've ever been in. I always wondered what, exactly, the man who built the home's connection to the Benders had been, and why his home was so negatively charged. I wish the internet had existed in its current form back then, or that I'd thought to write down the little town or the home builder's name.
The production quality and writing of this episode is excellent and so professional. Ive been watching you since the early days, even before the true crime subject matter, back in the makeup days. It’s been so inspiring to see how you’re channel has evolved! Excellent work Stephanie, many blessings!
I love the fact that you go into so much detail depicting the era of that time in Kansas. Also, such detail about the people who were murdered by the Benders. I was born, raised and still currently live about 45 or so miles Northwest of Cherryvale and the Bender site (Fredonia). I have always been intrigued by the Bloody Bender mystery, but most documentaries only do the basic telling of the story. Thank you for your time, research and detail-oriented explanation of the history.
When I was in college, a group of my friends and camped at the base of one of Benders mounds. Such a dark place and lots of sad vibes. So happy to see you did an episode on the "bloody benders" and excited for the next installment. Thank you ma'am ❤

I literally just got done watching HAROLD'S HALLOWEEN PARTY!!! Not only did your daughter kill it but she is literally one of the most BEAUTIFUL girls ive even seen...how proud you must be!!! Btw all the episodes were amazing!!!
I love history so episodes like this one are especially welcome. As per usual, the endeavor and diligence that Stephanie puts forth in creating these videos make for diverse entertaining pieces. Thank you Ms Harlowe!
In my experience, some of the most "boring states" are the nicest states to actually live in if you want peace and quiet. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and there just isn't a moment of peace there to me. Hate all the concrete and hustle/bustle. Loved living in Iowa and love living in Oklahoma. I lived in the country in both Iowa and Oklahoma and it's just so quiet and green (I actually find the sea of corn comforting lol). Oklahoma outside of Tulsa and Oklahoma City is just fields of cattle and woods, lots of great hiking trails and free lakes to swim in. We went on a trip last weekend to Lindsborg Kansas for swedish fest and it was so much fun! Such a cute little town and great coffee
I have come to absolutely LOVE the stories you tell from different time periods! It’s so fascinating to be transported to another place in time through these videos. Keep ‘em coming! 👏🏻💕
Right on time! Kiddos are at school, just made my coffee and was about to start my remote job then as always Steph graces me with her presence. Thank you Queen! ❤
I fall asleep listening to Stephanie too but only cause her voice soothes not because she’s not an amazing storyteller cuz I find myself rewinding and fighting sleep all the time cuz I love the story and I’ve been doing thus far beyond 5 plus years I’ve lost count at this point only thing I remember now is when I started watching Stephanie wasn’t even doing true crime she was doing make up and skin care and had a very small following but only cuz RUclips was very new. I’ve loved ❤ Stephanie from the start and have followed her from the start and she has kept me interested and I’ve remained loyal and will continue cause she is authentic and real!! ❤❤❤love ya Gurl! ❤❤❤
Stephanie, you’re such an amazing researcher and talented narrator! Your attention to the facts and historical details is phenomenal. I can’t wait to watch the next episode!
From one Stephanie to another: you have The Most well researched and detailed crime stories of the genre. I’ve watched the Lizzie Borden series three years in a row before Halloween. And of course yours are the quintessential series on Casey Anthony, Jon Benet Ramsey, and several others. You are so easy to listen to. Another great offering! Thanks so much!!
Banger of an intro! I watched Sommer Sanchez (check her out) cover this story, and I'm so glad it came to your attention, Stephanie! I love the different perspectives and different storytelling styles various creators provide. Let's gooooo!
Stephanie, pretty please, you’ve got to cover Killer of the Flower Moon! It’s all about what happens to the Osage in Oklahoma during the oil boom. The investigation of killing of the Osage women was the start of the FBI. It is SO a Stephanie Harlowe story!!!
This got my through a night of insomnia. Lovley to have something really interesting to listern to. I was hooked lol. Been following your channel for a long time and i love how u take the time to set the scene and give the history of what was happening at the time instead of just going straight into the crime. Keep up the great work xx
I’m in bed sick AF and am grateful for this upload, Stephanie! I feel better after listening to your story time! I appreciate your hard work and your content you provide us with! 👍❤️
I was listening to this starting my day doing a quick cleaning downstairs, but the way you set up the vibe in the start of the video with the crackling fire and the creepy music made me feel real cozy and warm inside like a little kid listening to a bedtime story ❤
Can you cover the case of Melissa Moody? My husband grew up with her and when Jesse Cummings killed her and her mother everyone just seemed to never talk about her again. There is a book called “Suffer the little children”that is an in-depth look at the case and an episode of snapped. She deserves to be remembered. She was a beautiful little girl.
I just read this book & found it fascinating & piqued my interest. I live in Kansas & had never heard this story before. My daughter goes to college in Coffeyville, just south of where all of this took place & I drive by all these towns every time I go visit. I'm going to take a day trip & go down & explore all of the history in the area. I found out there is still a museum in Cherryvale & markers to show where all of this occurred, and Dr York's grave is in Independence. I will say, since reading this book when I go down there now I find myself looking around & picturing what it was like back in the 1870's. Thank you so much for covering this one!!!!
I've been binging on all the Harloweens for the last few years. I work from home, put my headphones on, and listen to Stephanie and before I know it, hours have flown by!! I'm getting so much work done 😀 Thank you, Stephanie... Love your channel!!
I’m from Kansas and I didn’t even know half of this info - Stephanie always does an amazing job! Thanks for educating me more than the university of Kansas did! Hi to all my fellow Kansans since we rarely ever get representation lol
Born and bred in Kansas, most of my family is still there. I've since moved, but it is the best place to grow up - or was when I was a young'un lo many moons ago.
Can you provide some source material suggestions? I'm always on the lookout for viable sources. I know Stephanie is better than most at digging into things as fairly as possible and doesn't limit herself to just the internet. A good book suggestion would be great. @@LeeRalph100
Never heard of this case before and I’m definitely on my way to watch part 2! Hearing you recount Julia’s experience and how when she opened her eyes, the other 3 were just creeping up on her is chilling and I can’t even begin to imagine the fear that ran through her body seeing that creepy sight when she happened to open her eyes, realizing what was going on, trying to walk away, only to be followed by all 3 to the point that she got spooked and ran 😩😩.
I’m so excited to find out the true story behind this story! Yay! I’m actually really surprised that you hadn’t heard of this one, Stephanie. It’s one I’ve heard of many times and is one of the most intriguing so I’m glad you came across it.
I grew up in Kansas. Something you might find interesting is that John Brown, beard and hair blowing in the wind, bible in hand, is part of the mural in the rotunda of the Kansas State Capitol building.
I am a viewer and big fan of all of Harlowe's channels. Of all of her content, this is my favorite. I love her tales of horror and history. Everything about, her voice, the stories themselves are so captivating
I've lived in Lawrence Kansas for the past 10 years. I know a lot of the bleeding Kansas history but have never heard of the Bender family. Your channel has always been one of my favorites and this video was such a learning experience. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to the 2nd video! Stephanie, you are very talented!
Once there were only 30 minutes left I started thinking to myself „no no no“, because I knew I‘d have to wait for part 2 🙈 another great video, super interesting that this story is not well spread. Looking forward to part 2 ❤
I just got thru with the Bonnie and Clyde series and am so sad that it’s over so I am really grateful for this one♥️ really thinking about rewatching Bonnie and Clyde it was so good.
First snow of the year today and was so stressed driving today but opened my phone to my comfort RUclipsr and a new video 🥹 Love Stephanie and her channel so much
@@StephanieHarlowe been in awe since I saw this reply! I am a full time employee and a full time grad student and your videos have been playing on repeat all of my work day since I discovered your channel and have been playing anytime I’m cooking or crafting! I have been obsessed with your channel! I have been into true crime for years but I have never encountered someone who does such in depth and comprehensive analysis of not only the event of question but also the events that proceeded it and develops a holisitic view of the perpetrators childhood and family history which provides so much context and is so much better than then the usual 2 sentence summary of other True Crime RUclipsrs (no hate to any of them) but I cant watch them anymore because since watching you, their videos feel so incomplete and lacking detail. So grateful for you and all the hard work you put into your vidoes! I’m getting my master’s degree in psychology and you always blow me away with your analysis and your attention to contributing factors. You are the best! Hope you know how valued and appreciated you are 🤗 - Love from Canada 🇨🇦
So interesting! I now live in KC Missouri but moved to small town Osage county Kansas in 2010 and lived there for 12 years. I have a friend that owns and lives at the old stone house in Tecumseh, Ks. It was the last slave stronghold in Kansas. The history is fascinating. We filmed a short terror film for a alien theme festival. There is a map of the country hanging in the dining area. Colorado wasn’t a state yet. I got an eerie feeling in certain parts of the house and field around it.
My great grandma and her family came from Kansas to Oregon when my gram was a young adult (she was born in 1923) They were literally starving to death in Kansas and her brother had to go to Oregon for work and reported back home that Oregon was covered in trees of food that were just falling on the ground. They all packed everything up and moved to Oregon and my gram would tell me stories of how hard and horrible living in Kansas was and how life was so much better once they got to Oregon. She had many kids great grandkids and great great grandchildren when she passed away at 92. Thanks for a little more Kansas history ❤
I have ADHD and focusing is so hard but with Stephanie's story telling skills my mind doesn't wonder that far, you keep making me feel interested in what you're ying which is real big for me.
In the version of this story that I heard, they were the descendants of Scotland's Sawney-Bean family, or at least the members who escaped the brutal ending of that story, and supposedly used various aliases until settling in Western American under the name Bender. Probably not true, very likely that the Sawney-Bean family didn't actually exist. But it's still a cool wee connection between two of history's most famous cannibalistic families.
@@StephanieHarlowe I know and I know it shouldn't make me sad that it's been, more or less, proven fiction, as it is a brutal story. I just find those dark little facets of Scottish history, both true and mythical, to be the most interesting parts. I'm curious, did you come across that information as part of your research for this video or from researching something else?
Man, it was really hard to survive back then. So sad to think about how hard these people had to work just to live, just to have this happen to them! And I didn't know any of that about Lincoln's wife! I always learn so much from you, Stephanie thank you!!
Thank you for another spooky video! My favorite season! Also, I can't be the only one when I heard on crime weekly that your last name isn't harlowe?!?! Whattt!!!??? Lol blew my mind! I've been watching you since makeup videos! You'll always be Ms. Harlowe to me! So much love to you!!!
Miss Stephanie I can tell that you take all your content seriously and genuinely care about accurately conveying the facts to your dedicated followers. Well done as always ☕️
Born n raised in Kansas. I have personally seen sundown huts on a back road. I have seen sundown signs on the edge of town. Wichita is notoriously high in crime. Kansas has a rich rich history
Thank you Steph for another update! Having a rough couple days, so this was much needed. My birthday was Saturday, and life's just kicking me on repeat while im down 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️. This is the escape i was craving so badly so thank you Steph! You're amazing as always! ❤
I am throwing a tantrum! Lol I was jarred at where you stopped the story. This is a really good one! Thanks @Stephanie Harlowe! It’s getting me more into the mood of Halloween. P.S. My son is dressing as Tanjiro for Halloween.
I live about an hour from this area and already knew about the Benders but I love the depth and detail this video is going into. I'm looking forward to part two! Thank you!
i am a kansas native and i learned more from this than anything ever in HS…. not to mention i LOVED this video and i’m not usually big into history… love this Stephanie!
I have seen this story covered a couple of times, but I was really excited to see it covered again. I love these old true crime stories. There is something so chilling about them! I would LOVE to see you or other youtubers cover the Axe Man of New Orleans. It's incredibly creepy! I'm surprised it isn't a better known story. I've only seen it told once, in a segment on Mysteries at the Museum. Anyway, great in-depth coverage of this story!
I happy to say I remembered enough of my KS history lessons to totally follow along with your mini lesson Stephanie! Love having a little spotlight on my home state ❤
I am new to Stephanie’s channel and I’m absolutely loving it. I went all the way back to her very first video and have been binge watching her daily. I actually was watching a video on Slenderman on my phone on the way back from my daughters in Boston (traveling back to Michigan)and we were on I90 going through New York when I remembered she has said she lives in upstate New York. It absolutely gorgeous there 😊 I appreciate your content and the way you tell a story. I have also been binge watching Crime Weekly!! Love Stephanie & Derrick!!
As a European who has never been taught about the Wild West in school (and generally that era of the American history), I'd love to see more videos about it from Stephanie! The dark history of the Wild West, the oulaws, the crimes against the Indians... I'd love to hear it all!
I love your dives into history. We homeschool and I had my 13 yr. old daughter listen to the info on Kansas being settled and the fight against slavery. Thanks for the heavy research you always do to bring us a complete story full of detail and intrigue! You’re my favorite!
I went and made sure I had seen your spirituality broadcast from so many years ago and I had. I then made sure I had listened to every one before that also. I had. I’m loving the series!!! And Nev was great!!!
I love history so episodes like this one are especially welcome. As per usual, the endeavor and diligence that Stephanie puts forth in creating these videos make for diverse entertaining pieces. Thank you Ms Harlowe!
Thank you!!
Your historical crime stories are my favourite. Always great research and storytelling.
Oh I think Kansas is very nice, very beautiful as well
I have come to absolutely LOVE the stories you tell from different time periods! It’s so fascinating to be transported to another place in time through these videos. Keep ‘em coming! 👏🏻💕
New fav. channel. Calm, lilting narration. Proof indeed that if you watch enough RUclips you might learn something.
Can we just talk about how this lady ABSOLUTELY knows her History!!
A third Stephanie strongly agrees!
Banger of an intro! I watched Sommer Sanchez (check her out) cover this story, and I'm so glad it came to your attention, Stephanie! I love the different perspectives and different storytelling styles various creators provide. Let's gooooo!
thank you so much!!!
I live in Cherryvale, and in 3rd grade for our field trip we went to the small museum in town and they have the hammers from the benders still!
I’m in bed sick AF and am grateful for this upload, Stephanie! I feel better after listening to your story time! I appreciate your hard work and your content you provide us with! 👍❤️
feel better soon!
Your channel and the crime weekly podcast have been my go to for the last month. I really enjoy your story telling and your indepth research.
Yesssss! I have been waiting for AGES for Stephanie to cover the bloody benders. I’m so stoked!
I love a mix of history and horror content. 💜
May I ask which book you recently read on the Benders? The Cherryvale Museum is great!!
Right before starting a long ass art project for school! Harloween & drawing is best part of my day so far, thank you Stephanie!
thank you for being here!
Hi 👋 fellow Kansan here! My niece is a freshman at KU. RCJH!
Born and bred in Kansas, most of my family is still there. I've since moved, but it is the best place to grow up - or was when I was a young'un lo many moons ago.
Hello from the Capital! Sadly most info on the Benders is totally wrong, and the internet has just made true research even worse
It’s one I’ve heard of many times and is one of the most intriguing so I’m glad you came across it.
thank you so much for being here!
I grew up in Kansas. Something you might find interesting is that John Brown, beard and hair blowing in the wind, bible in hand, is part of the mural in the rotunda of the Kansas State Capitol building.
WOOHOO!! So glad I saw this notification so quickly!! LOVE when you post a new video!! ❤️❤️
I am a viewer and big fan of all of Harlowe's channels. Of all of her content, this is my favorite. I love her tales of horror and history. Everything about, her voice, the stories themselves are so captivating
I can’t remember when I first heard about the bloody Benders, but it’s such a crazy story. Glad you decided to cover it!
it is crazy! I'm surprised more people don't talk about it
I've lived in Lawrence Kansas for the past 10 years.

Bonnie and Clyde was, to this day, my favorite series to make
First snow of the year today and was so stressed driving today but opened my phone to my comfort RUclipsr and a new video 🥹 Love Stephanie and her channel so much
love you back!
Stephanie!
Thank you soooooo much for referring us to the Coleman Bros. Films!
You are phenomenal in those short films!!! I love Serial!!
I just read a novel about the Benders, it was a fictional account. I’m so here for the dets from Stephanie. This ‘family’ is beyond fascinating.
yes everything in this is true based on historical records
I wait all year for Harloween. Can't stand the days between the uploads because there is simple nothing else to watch, that compares.
Awww that’s so sweet! Thank you!
Tecumseh has an interesting history! I would love to see that video!
Those pesky Democrats didn't give up slaves easy thats for sure. Its wild how the party pretends that was not their roots in America.
Why do people insist on inserting political prejudice in comments? So annoying!
@@AvalonDreamz well given that the White Supremacists are all Republicans now, I wouldn't get too uppity about history.
This is in my backyard. Love revisiting the wild west. ❌️💃
I loved hearing her say towns names from my area. You did such a great job!!
Yay! Thank you!
My great grandma and her family came from Kansas to Oregon when my gram was a young adult (she was born in 1923)
They were literally starving to death in Kansas and her brother had to go to Oregon for work and reported back home that Oregon was covered in trees of food that were just falling on the ground. They all packed everything up and moved to Oregon and my gram would tell me stories of how hard and horrible living in Kansas was and how life was so much better once they got to Oregon. She had many kids great grandkids and great great grandchildren when she passed away at 92. Thanks for a little more Kansas history ❤
Yay! Love this episode. I grew up just a few miles from bender hill!
Very cool!!!
But it's still a cool wee connection between two of history's most famous cannibalistic families.
yeah from what I could tell, Sawney Bean came from a fictional pamphlet

As a Kansan thank you for covering a case here! I live in Lawrence and knew of the raids that a lot of people are unfamiliar with.
I am west of you, are you speaking of Quantrill's raids on Lawrence?
I love how much you interact with viewers in the comments. It's so rare to see that in larger channels.

This was a great video Stephanie!
It was so educational and so entertaining! I really enjoyed it and I’m eagerly awaiting part 2!
I'd love to hear it all!
thank you so much!
I moved myself and my two oldest sons to Fort Riley, Kansas in 2005 when my husband was deployed to Iraq the first time. I absolutely LOVED Kansas ❤
I love your dives into history. We homeschool and I had my 13 yr. old daughter listen to the info on Kansas being settled and the fight against slavery. Thanks for the heavy research you always do to bring us a complete story full of detail and intrigue! You’re my favorite!
