I was brought up on this stuff in South London. My favourite Pie and eel shop was Youngs of Brixton, sadly no longer there now. They made their liquor with the water that the eels were cooked in and it gave it a distinct taste that I have never had since. Always had a double pie and mash and my Nan had eels. The Vinegar was soused with hot red peppers which I still do today. It's just slightly better than Tripe and onions, another of my favourite dishes.
@@bobdole7292Their liquor, (often referred to as green liquor), was a simple parsley sauce made from the water they stewed the eels in. It had a distinctive flavour that I haven't tasted anywhere else since. I have tried to replicate it using fish stock, but it just doesn't have the same edge. This food isn't at all complex. It consists of a ground beef and onion (minced beef) single serve pie; a portion of mash potato, and the parsley liquor. The other addition is a shake or two of malt vinegar that has had hot chili peppers steeped in it.
Their liquor is just water and parsley thickened with corn starch I’m pretty sure. Couldn’t be more simple, and isn’t a culinary marvel. I just hope they season everything well with salt, otherwise this is all pretty bland.

My first ever trip to London was in the early 90’s and immediately after getting off the plane we were starving so the Ritz Carlton doorman got us a cab and said that for our first meal we had to take a bit of a ride to F. @Kevin Hodges had pie and mash for the first time from this place, the mash was alright, the pie tasted of absolutely fuck all. Tasted of nothing. Liquor wasnt bad tho. Not worth £6/7
Be grateful, English food sucks . There’s a reason why you national dish is tikka masala
@@FoolMe2wice
Just put some salt an pepper on it . Sometimes they dont season food alot
blindsamurai102 Not really, since English food always beats American food & snacks on Eng vs USA RUclips videos. All I see is a bunch of Americans saying why they don’t have this food item in their country.
We have some of best Indian restaurants in the world, don’t have very good Mexican food though you beat us there. So many Mexicans jumping the border it isn’t surprising though lol.
You make British food sound awful if this is the "finest". That's an insult to Beef Wellington...
This guys attitude and passion alone has me sold
I worked weekends as a teenager at Dalston Cooke's for 50p an hour. My Grandad used to take me along in the evenings when I was little, plus we only lived 1/2 mile or so away. I live in Essex today and luckily we still have them out here too!
I remember the Dalston one as a kid and seeing the gentleman cut up the eels in the front window.😊
I’ve watched this three times over the past three years
Can't get enough of that good old fashioned pie n mash, ay?
Alexandra Whitney you’re absolutely right!
My first ever trip to London was in the early 90’s and immediately after getting off the plane we were starving so the Ritz Carlton doorman got us a cab and said that for our first meal we had to take a bit of a ride to F. Cooke for pie and mash. It was the most delicious simple food I’ve ever eaten and the memory still sticks with me from those years ago. I will say I am NOT a fan of the eels however lol. Good lord that’s an acquired taste !!
It's a texture thing with me. Puts me right off. I don't enjoy squid or octopus, either. As for the Ritz Carlton, I think I got thrown out of the bar once. 🤣
I always went to the 1 in Waltham abbey double pie mash and liqueur.
Delicious I could eat that now .
I live in the Philippines and each time I visit UK I look for something new and different. I will be there in May 2024.
My first pie and mash experience at 6 years old in 1969. Cooke’s was always our Saturday morning treat.
I'm not from London but its awful sad to see places like this end
Can I have it with fries?
I know. We just see smelly curry houses everywhere
All dressed up in a suit and tie for a TV interview, while inserting a ball of dough into his dough roller, his famous last words were: "It's got me tie" ;-D)
I grew up a ten minute walk away from this place and I had only ever been there once - the local culture has completely moved on to new (just as good) things. It's great to see it still going.
Moved on or ethnic cleansing
@ James Jones : moved on, Home counties, Kent, Essex etc. Sorry did you just swallow your dog whistle?
@@jamesjones3371 he thinks the new things are 'just as good'. lol
We get it, you hate immigrants.@@jamesjones3371
I think that this man is great because he takes real pride in offering his customers some traditional food that he makes himself. No frozen pies or chips in this pie shop!
I just love this
National treasure, Hope it’s here for a long time and gets protected
Brilliant 👍🏻
Double double for me!!!!
(2 pies & 2 servings of mash for those who aren’t in the know)
dan martin I live in Canada and you're version of double double sounds a lot more than what we consider the default meaning here.
@@gauravudiyavar It might be a reference to In N Out Burger's in USA? The double double is 2 hamburger patties.
fatty
Pie chips and gravy for me
@@davenolan5709 now that's an artery clogger
Joe is great! A real Londoner!! He also does jellied eels. Seconds anyone?
"It's got weight to it to hold the meat and gravy" "we use gravy browning to give it a bit if colour"......."theres no such thing as gravy in pie and mash...we don't even use the G word" 😂😂😂
My Mum said that it’s why there was less rickets the licker
Less rickets in London than
Other cities
He says gravy browning which is just powder, had he said 'and a bit of gravy' yeah fair enough but he says gravy browning for colour, hope this clears things up :)
LIke the old man Cooke said in the 1800s, if a beautiful lady has a lovely pussy, you don't touch her, you liqueur.
@Haluk L. Aka I don't get it! Why not? And why not chips as well. Would fly out the door.
Nice, simple classic meal done beautifully. Good on you. Good that London is preserving some of its indigenous food. :)
Can’t beat a plate of two and one - I’m so hungry and so homesick!😩
I would have ate every last bit of that last plate served!
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
OmG that looks GOOD!!!
Turn the pie upside down, fill it with vinegar and pepper, best grub in London.
Babu Khan grub is slang for food lol
Gotta be chilli vinegar!
Best food on Earth not just London!!!
carpy1970 you’re name should be crapy1979
Michael B Is that really good?
This man rightly shows pride in his work and it's evident that it's reflected in the high quality of his product.
Pie and Mash, along with fish & chips, is yet another British food that I only wish was popular in the U.S.!
pie mash freshly cooked is the best, tastiest meal on the planet, full of goodness
Oh boy I'm scouse up here in Liverpool, id love to try that...do you deliver🙈🙈
That’s proper London.

Everything is fucking "amazing" nowadays all these people must do is walk around with their slack jaws open in total amazement.

theres also 1 in camden town, london,,and until recently, there was 1 in chapel market, islington,,,til it changed hands, and the new owners priced them selves out,,aka up the prices,,over charging, and under cutting the quality,,watery mash,,diluted liquer,,,and trade hit rock bottom,,when they got greedy,,,cos you could get a quality menu meal ,for much the same price,or less,,,,was a sad loss since the mansies days,as a low paid workers meal,,my last visit to the chapel market was my last,,when i saw what i was served, and walked out refusing to pay the 7,85p charge,,cos 11 months previous,,was charged 5,45,,by the previous owners,,,,,
@@shadeharison I hope it made them think. However , my experience has been those prepared to act , directly , like this , especially if in a controlled , poised manner , are always outnumbered either by the timid , or by the belligerent wherein the principle under discussion is forgotten , and the complainant easily dismissed .
Perhaps others might continue to mention on here other locations of such places.
Ive been here loads of times since I was a child. Not been here few years but food is amazing
YUMMY, i sooo miss me pie and mash. Hats off to you, thanks for sharing👍
2x Pie, 2x Mash, Liquor, Salt, Pepper, (Lots of) Chilli Vineger, 1x piece of Bread (for mopping), Orange Drink..... Nothing better on Planet Earth!

Who doesn’t love a good meat pie especially with mushy peas.
Used to love eating pie n mash here, was a great shame when it closed, the pie mash n liquor was gorgeous. I was a greedy sod though I had to have double pie n double mash
YUM!! There needs to be a shop like this in every NZ town and several in the bigger cities! Pie and mash shops are all but unknown here but I think they'd catch on quickly.
That looks mouth watering, yum.
