  • Here's another Reddit Challenge... this time Staging Mishap:
    / weekly_challenge_revis...
    The basic challenge, launch from Kerbin with a parachute on your nose in the first stage... keep the chute on until space, and reach orbit. I switched it up a bit by doing it on Eve instead.
    The game is Kerbal Space Program, available on Steam
    Music:
    Concerto No. 1 in E major, Op. 8, RV 269, "La primavera" (Spring) - Movement 3: Allegro
    from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi
    Wiedemann Recital Hall, Wichita State University
    John Harrison - Violin / Robert Turizziani - Conductor / Wichita State University Chamber Players

    Matthew Karr! You're back! I've missed your videos over the past year
    Excellent piloting and engineering as always. I'm sure this will hit super mode for that reddit challenge.

    You're Amazing, Karr. even if you don't do anything again, thank you for all the interesting designs you've already made. I was entranced by the paddleboat.

    it would be interesting to see how mow much of the rocket will remain if you went into a similar orbit with the same initial rocket without the parachute deploying, as in to see how much extra rocket is required because of the parachute.

  • @kwinvdv
    @kwinvdv 8 лет назад +2

    Why did you use the LV-N on the last stage. A smaller LOX engine would give more delta-v. For example a FL-T800 and a Terrier would weigh slightly less, have a slightly higher a TWR, but give 541 m/s more delta-v.

    • @Tsevion.7
      @Tsevion.7  8 лет назад +1

      Yeah... earlier iterations I was bringing more fuel for the nuclear stage, and it just kinda stuck around even when the extra fuel tank got removed.

  • @toby1248
    @toby1248 8 лет назад +1

    that LV-N was a BAD choice. It is ONLY better when it has lots of fuel and a heavy payload. Otherwise you are FAR better off with any chemical engine

    • @Tsevion.7
      @Tsevion.7  8 лет назад +1

      Yeah... I have a soft spot for nukes, and use them down to craft far smaller than ideal. Oddly enough, unlike most missions where shrinking the payload makes a huge difference in the total rocket needed, for most of the early trip the actual payload is the open parachute... so the mass of the final stage is mostly irrelevant.
      Also a side effect of being too lazy to install Kerbal Engineer or Mechjeb... most of it was just kinda winging it.

    • @AerynGaming
      @AerynGaming 8 лет назад

      You generally want to stack lv-909's / poodles / etc when you want a low to medium delta-v-per-stage - the nuke is quite a lot worse but those engines with ISP's in the 300's will cliff off and not be able to raise the stage delta-v past a certain point effectively. Rough guideline - 4k delta-v or less, go lv909; more go nuke.
      Most rockets don't have much reason to push more than 4k delta-v per stage (instead valueing more stages) so nukes are most effective for craft that are specifically designed not to stage often (if at all)

    • @toby1248
      @toby1248 8 лет назад

      Aeryn Osu agreed, but also remember that a single 12k dV nuke stage will be MUCH lighter than three 4k chemical stages

    • @AerynGaming
      @AerynGaming 8 лет назад

      Yeah looks that way - you're stuck with very low TWR's though if you're getting that much delta-v on one stage. The cliff for obtainable delta-v is extremely harsh

    • @toby1248
      @toby1248 8 лет назад

      Aeryn Osu yup, im fully aware. I've done many crazy insane high-dV missions in my time. If you want to go over 10k the best way is usually with LV-N and drop-tanks. You can really get the weight down that way, and even get up as high as ~20km/s on one engine stage

    Through my gathered evidence (the initials), did you make that art work for ksp? (its your profile picture too)

    • @Tsevion.7

      Oddly enough no... the initials is entirely a coincidence.

      I really wanted to come back with KSP 2 content at some point. But it never got to the point of being good enough that I felt like it. Maybe I'll try modding up KSP 1 and try again... or maybe some other game.
