“i woke up surrounded eyes like frozen planets-“ this whole verse visualizes him waking up in a hospital bed after a su*cide attempt to his loved ones and nurses watching him. by the last line he wants to disappear from their gazes because they will never understand his pain.
So this is straight up a song about a su1c1de attempt, I'm not sure but I think blue light over murder means he wasn't able to k himself and the bluelight refers to the ambulance arriving, since in the UK ambulances have blue lights, and it obviously makes an allusion to being underwater, cause in the second verse he wakes up at the hospital with the doctors watching him and telling him about the damage, the consequences and the pain they know they don't understand. Quite a heavy song, and one of my favs tbh. One more thing, in the visualizers, pay attention to how deep you'll get throughout the album, each song has a deepness level

This. It's a song about self -harm and an attempt at unaliving oneself. If it's something you've every experienced...this song tears you to pieces...because you can completely understand and feel what Vessel is saying. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs...and it always brings me to tears.
In addition to this comment, which is 100% correct, all the underwater stuff is setting up the lyrical theme of the album. All three ST album start with an introduction track that lets us know where we are in the story before the narrative begins proper with track two. So this song also serves to let the audience know what is coming up, a sad story wrapped in metaphors of the deep sea.

The line, "Merry in the morning/ earn your bitter fodder/ it's easier to try not to eat." That's something anyone who suffers with depression will understand. Get up, put a smile on your face! Go on, live that life you hate, earn that money, get that food, pay those bills, and do it all over again, forever, isn't that the best?! With a life so bitter, not really living but just existing, subsisting, like cattle on fodder, it would be easier to just give up, not eat, not work, not live.
But, tomorrow rolls around.
Merry in the morning.

So if you remember the end of the album version of Blood Sport, it ends with him crying. The albums are supposed to be a trilogy, so it goes immediately from him being completely broken and crying to waking up in the hospital after his attempt to remove himself from the census, although some people think the Event in this song was a car accident that led to his partner losing a baby ("crumble like a temple built from future daughters," and there's a line in High Water that will punch you in the gut). I kind of lean toward the latter because of all the references to car accidents in their songs. People also reference the scars Vessel actually has on his arm, and this is where I'm gonna go hardcore geek mode: I've worked in the medical field, and I've taken classes on forensics. The scars on Vessel's arm (the "trenches") are not from self harm. He may have those scars elsewhere, but the three lines on his left forearm are from some sort of accident. Self harm scars cause raised tissue, and the scars on Vessel's arm are really deep and sunken, indicating something took some serious chunks out of his arm. The location of the scars (left forearm near the elbow) is also in an area that is well known for taking impact during accidents-people put their arms up in front of them to brace for impact, and that spot is usually where a lot of blunt force trauma injuries occur during accidents.
As for the line "flood me like Atlantic, bandage up the trenches, anything to get me to sleep": if you've ever been hooked up to an IV, when you're first hooked up and the medicine starts flowing, it literally feels like your body is being flooded. I think he's talking about them bandaging his wounds and giving him pain medication, and how he just wants to go to sleep and forget everything that's happened. Then when that big switch-up hits, that's when the pain meds hit. It really does feel like that (I'm not a junkie, but I've had gallstones and I've been given dilaudid and that shit hits HARD 🤣).
AND when the guitars are playing, the synths in the background sound like whale songs too. This song (this whole album, really) has SO MANY LAYERS.
I sort of see this album like a play. Atlantic is starting off at the end of the story, where he wakes up in the hospital, surrounded by family members and feeling like absolute shit about himself. They give him the drugs ("flood me like Atlantic") and he starts to hallucinate (the big switch-up), then he falls asleep (the very end of the song), and he's dreaming about everything that led up to the accident ("don't wake me up" is the final moment of him drifting off to sleep to start dreaming about it all). The next song starts off at the beginning of the story of how he ended up in that hospital bed. And this shit tracks throughout the album! I will be annoying you with more long-ass comments as you continue down the journey!
But just wait until you get to Fall For Me. It's going to fucking break you. Promise. ;)
I never thought about this song like that. But after reading your comment it makes waaaaaay too much sense for it not to be true. Somehow this already tragic song is even sadder than initially imagined. Literally have tears in my eyes just thinking about it. But also Brb gonna go listen to this song 100 more times 😂
@@davidross7412 The miscarriage theory also tracks with a line from High Water... I won't spoil it for the guys, but the line following "I know you still bear the weight of your own existence" hits WAY harder when you consider a miscarriage.
SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THE ALBUM AHEAD, DON'T READ DUDES, THIS IS FOR @davidross7412: My theory is that this album can sort of exist on its own without the other two. Atlantic starts off at the end, then he falls asleep and retells the story of what happened. High Water is where the emotional climax of the album hits (probably the accident, and my theory is that the car went into water somewhere), and then Missing Limbs is immediately after the accident, submerged in the water, accepting his fate... then the sounds at the end of the song are the ambulance arriving and pulling the car out of the water. I know people say the end of Missing Limbs fades into the beginning of Chokehold (and it does), BUT if you play TPWBYT on a loop, it goes seamlessly from him sinking to the bottom, then being pulled out (and the visualizer even looks like something entering the water during the static), and immediately looping back into Atlantic where he's waking up in the hospital. It's like a never-ending loop that he's stuck in, but then in Chokehold he acknowledges he's trapped and he starts to break out of he cycle in TMBTE.

Look at this:
In Sundowning we got Blood Sport.
Now we have atlantic where he sings: wash away the blood on my hands.
And in Take me Back to Eden we can listen to Rain where he wrote the line:
"... And wash out the salt from my hand"
So, he got his hands dirty with blood at some point in the end of blood sport, then atlantic ocean washed away the blood with salt water, after all the rain washes the salt water on his hands.
Well, I never thought of that. That's really great! Never made the connection. I always thought Patient (from a band of his that shall not be named) Atlantic and Granite went together to tell a tale of a car crash that changed him. But this is a great take as well!

The song is about a self-deletion attempt. The eyes surrounding him in the hospital bed after waking up from a failed attempt, talking him through the damage and consequence of it while simultaneously not understanding his pain that drove him to that point, and he wants to be flooded (cleansed) of this terrible event by washing the blood from his hands. If you look at pictures of Vessel performing live, you'll notice scars on his arm.

Love the reactions, glad to see you're still going. This first song hits real hard. I'm pretty sure this song is about a suicide attempt. First couple verses are about hitting rock bottom and trying to commit suicide but it's not successful (ambulances in the UK have blue lights, so blue lights over murder can be interpreted as getting rushed to the hospital instead of killing himself). The 3rd and 4th verse is him waking up in the hospital, which hits me real hard as I had that exact experience after a car accident. You're in for a ride on this album.
If it was a attempt to unalive himself why would he say blue light over murder? There was a car accident and a loss of life. Him and her both survived. At a later point there was an attempt by her but not vessel. Look at the album art for are you really ok. You will see a baby in the womb.
Always watch these as soon as they pop up. I commend you two for the deep dive. It's the only way.

in the uk the ambulances have blue lights. blue lights (and the reason for being in an ambulance) over literally committing murder or lyrically something worse. man's a genius.
See I am from the USA so it's red or amber and white lights. I took it as vessel seeing sleep taking others (like how he felt in drag me under) and begs sleep to take him instead of the others. Letting himself be the sacrifice and feel that pain so others didn't. Which might tie into the self harm aspect of the song
That is my take on it. But I like the double of moonlight through water and ambulance lights to connect em
I have a feeling this album might become their favorite just like mine haha. This Place Will Become Your Tomb might be the underrated one within the trinity, but this album holds so much depth and emotion it’s gut wrenchingly beautiful 💙

So Vessel's dream was of the ocean as far as he could see. While he couldn't see sleep, he could see the lack of her presence and felt the cold heavy disturbing weight that she brings with her. So I believe he is saying he would give himself to the deep, rather than see others taken down the path hence "call me when they bury, bodies underwater it's blue light over murder for me"
But I believe the rest of the song is about his actual reality of self harm and its effects on himself and others
Yea the other comments nailed it- I've always interpreted this as reflection on a suicide attempt. 'Blue lights over murder' = ambulance instead of the morgue, 'talk me through the damage, consequence and how it's a pain they know they don't understand' = the Dr's and nurses giving their weak attempt at therapy. Something I have experience with slightly, though I didn't make it to the hospital, luckily. Friends intervened. Love yalls content!!

It brings me such joy to see you two be so excited about this song and this next album! It’s my fav ST album, but it’s absolutely the most emotional and gut wrenching, so be prepared! But as others have said, this song is about an unaliving attempt 😢 Glad it didn’t take! 🙏🏻 This song hits soooo hard live! During their recent tour, we had leaders for what was called Projekt Atlantic (I was one for Tampa) pass out blue stickers for people to put on the flashlight of their phones, and lights, and we told everyone to light up blue when they played this song and the whole venue lit up at every show! (Except Redrocks did red for Chokehold, and I think another state did pink for The Love You Want). It was the most beautiful sight 🥹

I was at the Ritual in Philly. We did the blue lights for Projekt Atlantic. I've heard they're trying to set up a Projekt Euclid for the European tour and use green. My daughter is going to Leeds, UK to the Ritual there.

A lot of us also think there was a car accident of some sort that ended up with their car in the water (think British roads on the cliff sides next to the ocean). I also think there's even more to this in that they lost a child during the accident - "crumble like a temple built from future daughters." Makes sense to me why there'd be a self-deletion attempt after that.

Since this album deals with self harm a lot, its probably why I hate it and dont feel it. I feel sorrow and loneliness, but killing yourself is another level of hate.

The real question is, is the line "anything to get me to sleep" OR "anything to get me to Sleep"? Is the unalive attempt in this song because he wanted rest or because he wanted to go to her.
