My focus lately has been colour association, just because you 'see' a colour, it doesn't mean it 'is' the colour. Working out those palettes is quite a challenge, but I started with videos like this! This is a 'basics' video that is really important to revisit several times a year, can never study theory enough as theory is never 'basic'!
After watching many people's videos and coming back to watch your videos, I must say that your way of guiding viewers is extremely attractive and memorable.
I study a great deal on art, and of all the studying i do this channel explains advanced concepts in mere minutes. I appreciate the work you do, thank you.
I am so bad at coloring my ocs. And I want to draw a comic. I’ll hopefully get better over time. I’m thinking about joining your art program! I do want to improve my art but shouldn’t be spending money right now 😬 😅
I've known about the color harmonies for a long time but none of the resources I've seen have ever talked about HOW to use the colors and to make use of their value and saturation. The guides always put the colors next to each other at their highest saturations which looks so terrible I didn't understand why those colors would be were considered harmonious. This extra information goes a long way!
Hmm..... So is that why so many superheroes have sometimes even stupidly bright and aggressive color schemes, to make them always the center of attention on the page regardless of how busy the page gets? (Batman of course being the exception as his niche was to hide/strike from the shadows originally).
One question @Marc Brunet : Why are you using the pigment (= RYB = Ittens) Chromatic Circle/Color Wheel instead of the light based one? Because depending on the circle the color schemes change a lot. Are the same color schemes applicable to the other chromatic circle as well? Would love to hear your answer, because I was introduced to the pigment version of complementary colors in 5th grade (teacher said "they make each other to shine more"), but the scientific explanation for complementary colors (if mixed they become white (light version) or grey (pigment version)) suggests that the light color scheme should be used for correct complementary colors. So now I am confused :D
color harmonies came up hundreds of years ago so it's all based on pigment colors, but it's not an exact science and it works very well with light colors too even if the chromatic circle isn't quite the same
@@YTartschool Thank you for the answer! Do you know artists, who use the color schemes on the light based chromatic circle? Perhaps I will do a video about this: Using the color schemes from your color schemes video, it would compare 2 images for every color scheme, but one image uses the light based and the other the pigment based chromatic circle 🤔This way one could see if the mood/athmosphere stays the same. Just have to find an easy to paint picture, because my drawing sucks :D
Because the ittens color wheels still produces the best results for teaching the fundamentals of illustration and design, it’s just that colors are displayed in rgb on screens so understanding how colors are produced for digital requires understanding the digital color wheel. Being a digital artist these days really requires to use both color wheels at the same time in your head. It’s very technical and thats not even getting into cmyk. Trad Painters will struggle with the digital color wheel when painting because they don’t have access to illumination or the color yellow.
Today I learned that desaturated red can be described as a 'cool' colour! But the thing that caught my attention the most was you mentioning my short attention-span, that really hit close to home. But then I forgot about it immediately because purdy colours.
Getting ready to dive into my painting session, and wouldn't you know it, this video showed up just in time! Talk about perfect timing - it's like the universe knew I needed some color theory inspiration for my creative endeavor. Excited to see how this newfound knowledge will enhance my artistic journey! 🎨✨
Dad harmony is when you and your bud are making bad puns back and forth in a canoe while fishing. Great video. I have the courses, but getting a short overview helps to put a lot of this *in perspective* ;)
Marc, you are an absolute beast! From all ur videos I've seen til now, this one in particular clicked instantly. I was watching and going like "hm, this could improve this drawing, and this could improve that other one." I watch you since the sub-100k subs period, and it's incredible how much you've grown as an artist and how *chef kiss* the videos look. I'll join your course whenever I have the means to, but for now all I can do is keep sharing your videos to friends and other artists out there. Wish you all the success and a very nice day!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS 😭😭 you have no idea how much I've been struggling to choose colors for my pieces, and I always ended up thinking that they all look so ded. This is really helpful and straight to the point. My ADHD is really grateful 🙏
how is he always there when i need him, like everytime i face a certain type of art problem he uploads the video that i need. Truly remarkable im glad i subscribed, ty marc
Yesterday I yelled about color theory to my neighbors in the middle of the night and today a limo full of Disney executives came here looking for talent.
this was very interesting. i have question colour zones on face ( up yellowish on forhead redish in midlle of face and bluish chin) i don´t understand how to use it coretly : is it that use yellow colour and made it transparent or at other way?
Color zones are very obvious in some people, but don't be slavish to it as you will end up with clown faces. If you're painting someone who uses foundation, the color zones may not even exist and sometimes color (red on cheeks for instance) is accentuated with makeup. Best thing is to look at a lot of faces. There's a number of ways to paint color zones. The cleanest way is to do it after doing the preliminary render and glazing the colors by using blending modes or opacity. It should be subtle, but again in some people these color zones are obvious.
I wouldn’t use that if I were you, doesn’t work most of the time. Only valid for more realistic faces, mostly only males, and in specific lighting situations
I love your videos! Your understanding of color is amazing. About lead colors, a artist I follow(Mika pikazo) uses very vibrant colors everywhere throughout the canvas. Does anyone know how that works?
I can't tell if the reason my colour stuff is lacking is because I still suck, or if it's my screen's fault. I mean, I kinda have to juggle the file between my phone and laptop to get what the actual colour is since my laptop screen's kinda desaturated, My usual process is to finish something, juggle to my phone screen, decide on what to change and juggle back, and then I do what I think needs to change and juggle to my phone again, only to see it still sucks. I'm considering changing my laptop screen to a better-quality version, if that's even possible. But if it's just a skill issue, I'd rather just keep the money.
Color doctor Marc is here to fix all your problems (art only) for the low price of one like or 1 sub. No refunds.
Please do a video on foreshortening basics

Color theory would never cure my "rainbow OC deficiency"😭😭
Read color and light of james gurney, the part of gammut triangle, it will be the cure, because you actually can still paint with all the colors
My issue is red a blue causes my eyes to feel all comfy. Not a good look for a character.
Nah you gonna fail art school💀

Nice rendering for your art work
when i heard this class isn't free I kinda rolled my eyes, but a like and a subscribe for such a good video, is definitely a bargain
"cuz I know you have a short attention span" dude... i JUST found you and i got called out so quickly lmao.
Good video but the white background burns my retinas. 🥲

Thank you! I was never taught color warmth is relative!

yep they often use diad (like ironman red/yellow), triad (like captain marvel red/blue/yellow) or complementary (like hulk green/purple)
this almost a reupload tho?
