This poor guy. Certainly he never received love because who he was genuinely. He has this awful mother who all of his life saw him as a tool. He was considered a loser by his training mates, hatred and rejected by his father and used as a weapon by Marley. Even the kids saw him as a hero because the killing he has done. @@t-ro6176the whole point of AOT is that there are no good guys in true war. Marley was bad, Eren(and by extension Eldia) was objectively worse despite having a good reason. It's main theme being that the worst of things can happen because of the best of intentions. See Zeke, Eren, and Grisha as example. Or ymir's own treatment
A mother usually knows this stuff. She was probably extremely sad her son had to go through with such a mission. He was only 14 when he infiltrated the walls.
So the funny thing is : He is jut speaking in Marleyan. Let me translate it in Eldian for you : "I miss my friends terribly. And there is no words that can describe how much i regret what I did to them."
And the way Gabi asks afterwards, "Huh? Aren't they bad people?" shows how much of a child she is. She's a child, and everything has been taught to her. I really love her arc in the manga because it shows how children get dragged into the cycle of hate, and how they can be freed from it.
@t-ro6176 when man is presented with obstacles that could change us and our fundamental way of thinking the road is almost impossibly hard, as humans we're hard wired to stick to familiarity even when the truth is right in front of us, think how bad habits or addictions form its all based on whats familiar to us not on what we SHOULD be doing its illogical but we follow the road regardless its how we adapted to survive so long, the only real way to change it is to reinforce different ideas until the old ideas are phased out, once or twice just isn't enough.

His family were brainwashed but they weren’t idiots. They could tell he wasn’t being sincere. Most people would see right through him and would be able to tell he was reminiscing about some of the best years of his life rather than conveying what a living hell the island and living with its inhabitants were.
He was being sincere if talking about actual experience but looks insincere if we considered the brain-washing propaganda that was taught to his family before he sets off to Paradis Island.
to anyone who's confused, his mom wasnt scared by the story, she was scared of the way reiner was describing them, like they're normal human beings. she was terrified of the prospect of paradis ''demons'' being normal human beings just like them, she and everyone else were convinced that eldians were monsters, and reiner shook that belief with his story. she was terrified of Reiner slipping up and showing his compassion towards the paradis eldians, in fear of what marely would do to her family and loved ones. she knows eldians are normal people just like her and everyone around her.
It's really hilarious, and also incredibly heartbreaking, that when Reiner tries to think of the horrific things he saw on Paradis, the best he can think of are more akin to summer camp than an island of devils.
"My time there was a living hell" His time there was hell. Not because the people were bad but because to them he was a devil. He had to betray friends and comrades that were as much a victim of circumstance as he was. He was forced to confront the reality that was different to what he had been groomed to believe. There was no easy good vs evil like he believed when he first helped destroy the wall, merely two sides of a conflict. That is the greatest trauma, is being burdened by all of this and yet knowing you have a role that you cannot change. This is his hell
Guys after reading a lot of comments I think most people don't get the right idea of the scene Reiner is not being sarcastic neither that Isayama's sense of humour is twisted... Reine didn't want to lie and he was delivering the truth A childish girl that loves food A strict teacher A brave who cares about others A Coward who only cares about himself A stupid who doesn't know why he went to the bathroom He wanted to say that they're nothing like we're told, they are normal people trying to live their own lives. Nevertheless, he can't say that or they will be considered open rebellions so he was covering his answer with words like Devils, savages and hell... His family is not stupid and that's why they were scared not because of a potato girl. They may get hanged because of his words. And that's why she closed the window because she was worried that someone may hear him and snitch. They are afraid of the idea that what if Reiner changed or repel against Marley after his experience. And his mother realized that and was shocked that he says these things especially in front of Gabi whom her attitude may change towards Marley and Paradise. And that's why when Gabi asked: What do you mean "all sorts of people", Ain't they all bad? Reiner's mother immediately interrupted saying that they are and these island devils turned our life to hell and ended the talking. To remove any influence Gabi may have got from Reiner words. And yeah, I know it's fun to ignore this fact for a moment and enjoy Sasha being a badass I love it too.
Reiner actually did think it was funny. In the manga, it was more obvious. He thought calling them devils was laughable, but he tried to hide it. Then he started telling the truth. He got too into it and started reminiscing and his mom got worried that spies or snitches could be listening.
@@muntu1221 I think that Reiner not being as sarcastic in the anime is a nice touch, it makes his dialogue in this scene sound like he’s really bad at lying, which is in line with his character.
Reiner: And there was this one demon, the absolute worst of them all, she had golden hair that looked like sunshine on a warm summer sunrise, her eyes were so blue that would make the clearest sky look like a gray rainy day, she was so kind and cute i spent enitre days dreaming of making a family with her, we would had 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls and 3 big dogs and a small one.
... Those were indeed actual hellish moments for reiner, because he had to stay there side by side with his friends, knowing he was a traitor, knowing he was the one who caused all of their misfortunes
@@nebula8117 well make sense because Eren faced the cruelty of the World much later compared to Reiner because he was Eldian and his goal of killing all the titans wasn't interesting . When Eren was training to become a scout . Reiner had already done the training part and was starting to understand that the people inside the wall weren't the real devils as he had been taught . Slowly realising all this while keeping grasp of what his actual role was in all this must've been really hard .
It's that she disrespected her commander breaking discipline and eating, while he was talking. An Eldian would never do that to a Marleyan commander. They would probably get thrown in the gallows immediately. You see how these Eldians all walk on egg shells around the Marleyans.
I love this scene. Really brings Reiner’s existential crisis full circle. It shows that he was brought up and trained to hate Eldians, but spending years in their presence showed him that they were just normal people, living normal lives, up until the titans came
and despite that he still went through with the mission, betraying his friends while keeping his loyalty to marley a life condemned to betrayal from the start
“Every single one was a hopeless idiot.” -104th Training Corps “This one person started eating a potato.” -Sasha “There was one moron dumb enough to forget why he came to the bathroom.” -Connie “An irresponsible guy who only thought about himself.” -Jean “A straight laced dumbass who’d think of everyone but himself.” -Marco “A guy who’d charge into any situation without thinking.” -Eren “And the two who would follow him through anything.” -Armin, Mikasa
This scene always gives me chills Then cut to Gabi saying "There are no devils on this islands, they were all human" Brings tears in my eyes and I feel so bad for Reiner Her mom's face is really screaming "no don't acknowledge the truth, stay oblivious and brainwashed, that's the only way we can live"
I always love how Reiner highlights Sasha eating a potato during the opening ceremony but doesn't say anything about her being able to run for more than 5 hours straight before falling down or Sasha literally going rabid over a piece of meat that she starts eating Jean's fingers
He is depressed because on some level he realized he betrayed a bunch of people who were at worst a ragtag band of idiots. The mom is horrified because he just described perceived demons as if they were friends he made after coming back from school with out even thinking about it.

Reiner: gives his 5-year “horror” story of life on Paradis to his family The family: traumatized by his story Reiner: “Sorry. That was a strange thing to say.”
He’s not traumatised, he can’t think of anyways those he was close to in the walls were evil so he emphasises stupid things. At the end of his speech he says there were many people inside the walls instead of calling them devils which shows he thinks of them as people. The eldians are taught to think of paradisians as devils and cannot show that they think of them as anything but devils.
Reiner was a hero to both sides, but ended up being an outcast to everyone. The saddest character ever. The path from a minor character to an antagonist to the main character.
i loved this scene so much, it’s even better at the mothers face of horror after reiner is talking about them like normal people (because that’s what they are) it’s so good
She looked at him in horror because she could tell he missed them and regretted what he did to them (like any mother would). Cause when his family asked “what do these devils act like” his only response was basic human personality traits. Almost as if he was trying to convince himself that was reason enough to call them devils. When in fact they were never devils to him.
Not just a battlefield. Reiner infiltrated and lived amongst his enemy for close to 5 years. Breaking a wall and letting titans eat people is one thing, but having to actively massacre the closest thing to family you've had for a decent portion of your formative years? Yeah, unsurprising that Reiner is a broken mess.
To think that their happiest moments and the only time they felt treated equally was when they were behind a giant wall and inside enemy land says a lot. To think that there's also a cute girl who turned out to be a queen and you had to left her only to comeback knowing that she is now pregnant damn that hurts
Reiner is one of the best characters in anime. You can feel the clashing between his lived experience and the brainwashing he received as a kid. After you learn his backstory, you can;t really hate him. You even feel bad for probably wanting him dead during s2.

I haven't read the manga, but to me it was super obvious that Reiner was being sarcastic to subtly tell his family that the Eldians of Paradise are just normal people like them, while at the same time also remembering the time he spent with his comrades fondly.
Apparently, some people allege that Reiner is happily reminiscing about the people in the 104th, while trying to paint them as horrible as possible, and then Reiner says that it was hell so as to badly cover up that her referred to them as people. That hell, allegedly, is that Reiner thought Eldians were devils, but they were normal, and he was broken upon having to ruin their lives. @@LokiTheGodofMischief yeah but Kaya never tell Gabi about this. maybe she never know as well as Sasha never tell her the story. Reiner also never know that Sasha died?
That scene was so hard to witness. It becomes so clear that Reiner really misses all his old comrades and his life there. Despite his actions Reiner is every bit of a victim of this world as well. The toll his guilt takes on him already became apparent on the way his personality split. I think he is truly of the greatest characters every written for anime.
I admit, Reiner really turned around for me. First it was "Fuck you, you filthy traitor" Then it was "Ah, you're literally just following your orders. But still, fuck you." And finally it was "You poor guy, you really had a rough go of it, didn't you?"
@@raymundohernandez8322 Shit loads of people died horribly without even knowing about the truth. You know that, right? Everybody is a victim because of the history that are unrelated to them.
This scene is awesome. There are so many things going on with just a couple words. Reiner is trying to think of the awful things the island demons did while he was there, and as he does his best to describe them in an evil light, both him and his family is noticing how he is humanizing them and that he actually lived a happier life among them. Then the realisation sets in the room that not only these devils are just like them, but that Reiner is now a liability as if Marleyians hear them talk about the people of Paradise in any other light than describing them as evil, they themself might be cast out of Marley for sympathising with Paradise. This little monologue of Reiner put him and his family within two lines of fire. They are not welcome among the Eldian people because of the crimes of Reiner, but if the truth gets out, if Reiner is honest even for a moment in front of the wrong people, then they'll all be turned into titans and sent on their way like how Marley deals with Eldian sympathisers in Marley territory. Reiner is truly a tragic character. He had to live a lie both in Eldia and Marley. The only single time he got to be honest is when apologising for Eren.
Reiner: "So there was this girl, she ate a potato..." Everyone else: "BLASPHEMY, WHAT AN ATROCIOUS ACT OF THE DEVIL, THEY DESERVE TO BE CONDEMNED TO DEATH"
“A guy who's charge into any situation without thinking.. and the two who would follow him through anything.” *why do I hear protagonist music playing-*

They are not welcome among the Eldian people because of the crimes of Reiner, but if the truth gets out, if Reiner is honest even for a moment in front of the wrong people, then they'll all be turned into titans and sent on their way like how Marley deals with Eldian sympathisers in Marley territory.

reiner is literally the human embodiment of "just because you are bad guy doesnt mean you are bad guy"
Is like having Vietnam flashback but is you're favourite flashback.
I like how Reiner gets so philosophical and deep into this one scene that was just Sasha eating a potato.
Reiner has become my favorite character, because he's the only one aware of how evil his actions are. He feels regret and shame for what he's done, which makes him more honorable than everyone else.
Everyone else?
