He is like dead beyond belief.
For real. Spoilers, but at the part where they were deciding who to give the shot to, I thought they were going to choose Armin, but it would have been way too late and he would have remained dead.
Yeah, I don't think this is bad at all. Like, just make Reiner not get hit through the neck and the whole thing plays out exactly the same. Armin falling almost the height of the wall and surviving though? There's absolutely no way you can excuse that lmao
Fun fact: Aot's creater once said in an interview that his fav character was Reiner, so i must say im not surprised to see that Reiner lives every single mortal blow dealt to him Edit: Dear god thats so many likes
The transfer of consciousness was only important because it's a founder ability that the armor got. Yimir could do it too and transfered her consciousness to the Paths
Now that sounds very cool. Zeke said that Ymir had wanted to escape death, so even after she had died she awoke in the Paths realm, where such thing as death doesn’t exist. And Armored Titan can transfer its consciousness to other body parts to escape death in a similar way.
isnt the armor of the titan, the power of the armored titan? And also, the armored titan transfered his consciousness to his body, ymir's paths is a whole dimension where there is no future, present and past, and that conects all eldians, can we even make a paralel with transfering the cousciousness to the body with that?
The lore stuff about extra abilities never made much sense to me. Like what the hell was in that vial that gave Eren the ability to create armor? How did Falco learn to fly, what the hell happened there with him and Annie?
for all the shit Reiner gets for how long he lives (and he should), it does play up his narrative symbol. Until the very end of the story Reiner was someone haunted by the sacrifices of those around him and all he ever wanted was a peaceful escape to death. But by circumstance and stupid luck he is never able to. His tragedy is that he is unable to gain the peace he wants by almost godlike intervention while Eren, the other side of his coin, does achieve his perfect peaceful victory in the end. Dosent excuse the writing but makes it not really a problem for me given how his character story was done.
if Reiner wanted to die the 19 thunder spears was his ticket. the reality is that Reiner is a guilty coward who will cling to life and let others die for him. marcel, bertholdt, Marco, porco. Reiner is one of the most evil people in the show.
@@JohnDoe-ligma tf, that’s chimp logic. Reiner did not make Proco and Marcel die for him, they did it for their own reasons that are beat into your skull if you have any media literacy. What bugs me is that Reiner can survive getting most of his head blown off, but Porco loses a much smaller chunk of his head and, oooooh no! He's too messed up to heal himself! Time to feed himself to Falco! And his last words being something to the effect of of, " I was always better than you after all, Reiner." Uh, no you weren't. Yeah but if we skip over plot points of his sacrifice we can assume that : he just recieved memories about his brother wanting to protect him from war and thats why he wasnt choosen to be a warrior so maybe porco thought that since his brother sacrificed himself or rather sacrificed reiner for porco so he might as well sacrifice himself for someone else since hes already too injured to fight

I just can’t think of any realistic way that Reiner could survive a surprise attack against Levi, and I doubt Isayama could either, while still giving his characters the opportunity to take the initiative, so he came up with the transferring consciousness ploy. When I read these chapters for the first time, my thought was that Reiner would at least be permanently trapped in his Titan body, providing a severe downside to escaping death. But nope. From what we know, Reiner is pretty invincible.
Yeah I feel like having it be different way could also be hard. I mean if Isayama just had Levi not attack any vital points then it would be clearly Levi's totally basic mistake as he had perfect opportunity which he didn't use, something that I feel like wouldn't fit what we know of Levi up to that point. He is one of most skilled fighters in whole series so I having him do such a blatant mistake just for plot convinience also wouldn't feel right.
@@mrszmatan2727An easy fix is to give Reiner some kind of special Marleyan equipment to make his entrance easier. Maybe a smoke bomb? Would be pretty hard for Levi to stab someone he can't see, or make Reiner leap out of the walls and ODM his way somewhere else necessitating that Levi has to chase him instead of instantly murder him
The cart titan was literally on top of the wall looking over the town and would have easily seen the scouts with reiner, connie was literally on a roof too, and reiner would be letting off lots of steam she wouldve seen her finding reiner is not hard
Also, the cart titan is THE stealth Titan. Pieck does all the undercover wet work! Not a stretch of the imagination to believe she got in there undetected.
The idea of a shifter using their titan body as a surrogate for their consciousness as their human body regenerates is pretty cool. Titans don't have most organs but they do have a brain. So reiner living using this power is fine when bertholdt goes to him after the spears mess him up the first time. The other use with Levi is a little iffy though
I honestly loved that Reiner specifically can transfer/disperse his consciousness to prevent serious incapacitation or death. It fits so well with the theme of his titan. You thought his durability stopped at his armor? Nah good luck taking this guy down period. I'm honestly disappointed he's not given BETTER durability/resilience feats.
Yeah I agree. It didn't particularly offend me either. He never got into such a dire situation later in the story and it fits his defensive theme as you say.
@@Gahanun fr, its called the armored titan, u think this mf don't got unkillable defensive abilities? the attack titan can literally see the future, but this is crazy?
I mostly agree with this video. I think the ability to transfer your consciousness into your body is one of the few times I felt like a power was contrived into the story. Every other titan power was set up as a mystery, or was spread throughout. It all was used more than once. But this? No set up, and it's never used again. I won't say it doesn't make sense, since Titan Spinal Bullshit™ seems possible, it's just kind of bleh compared to every other ability. I think Reiner surviving can easily be explained by Isayama's want to torture Reiner as much as possible. Obviously, he has the worst kind of plot armor.
@@seg162 That is inconsistent, but I mostly feel like it doesn't majorly effect the plot. It might have some minor changes. This one would have killed Reiner, ultimately shifting the story from this point forward.
@@ibm30rpg Well, humans are thought to remain conscious for up to 30 seconds after decapitation. If all it needed was Eren to be conscious for him to be "alive" then that was well within the time span from being shot to touching Zeke.
I totally agree about the transferring conscious by Reiner, that’s the only time throughout the entire show that I just put my hands up and went, well that’s dumb as hell! And it’s never talked about or explained again. It felt like the only time this show pulled one of those shonen plot armor tricks that you see in something like Bleach or something.
Another moment that I thought was dumb as hell was when Eren and co. were in the crystal cavern as it was caving in. Eren needed the hardening ability to protect everyone and whadyaknow there just so happens to be a bottle of armour juice in the bag next to him. This is so unsatisfying. Would it have been such a stretch that hardening is an inherent ability that titan shifters have that can be brought out with training? That's exactly what Eren was doing prior to this arc: training to gain the hardening ability. After all, Annie had hardening powers. Zeke is shown to have hardening powers. Reiner has an extreme case of hardening powers which you could say is the best hardening of any of the titans. We also know that the walls themselves were erected using the hardening powers of millions of colossal titans. A life-or-death moment of crisis like what Eren was experiencing in the cavern would have been the perfect time for him to unearth this ability. But no, just down a conveniently-placed chug jug, and you're done. So stupid.
@@dozergames2395 Actually no, I would say that it makes sense for his first time to be so impressive, he just ingested it and there was a lot of it in his system. After that, he does either turns the full titan into hardening (deplenishing his energy) OR just small tricks like Annie did.
They could have had the same exact scene minus the armor juice. He just magically learns how to do it because he wants to protect his friends or whatever, that would have been fine.
The popular consensus is that it's a bottle of the Armored Titan's spinal fluid. Just like how Falco's Jaw Titan got traits of the Beast Titan due to Zeke's spinal fluid, it's not a stretch to imagine both Eren and Annie having ingested Armored Titan fluid.
I've been thinking the same. Aot has such jawdropingly amazing twists and plot developments that it baffles me when Iseyama uses something as simple as plot armor
Given that every titan has some unique ability... (cart - ability to stay in titan form for months, jaw - has the hardest hardening, attack - can receive future memories, female - extra good at manifesting) ...I don't see a problem with Reiner's consciousness transfer ability. It matches the toughness of the armored perfectly, making him harder to kill. Also we don't know how deep Levi stabbed into his chest - it would have had to go almost all the way through his torso to cut his spine.
like many other's have mentioned, "It was never set up, it never came back." thats a huge issue with the lore. Not to mention no other titan shifters had any other powers in their human form aside from wolverine healing. It's a contrived plot device. I still love the show, but this part could have been written better.
@@psython2160 Hmm, I agree that it could've been at least mentioned later but many other powers also seemed to come out of nowhere with little to no setup. And it's not true that all other shifters only had healing in human form. Frieda wiped memories, while Lara Tybur and Eren could create stuff with the Warhammer Titan power.
The only part of this I disagree with is the sword in his chest messes with the consciousness transfer, remember, he saw levi coming, transferred his consciousness, got stabbed in the neck, THEN got stabbed in the chest, his consciousness could still be intact in his limbs and such (although the power suddenly showing up, barely being explained, then not showing up again is still stupid)

On one hand I do think the whole "transferring consciousness" thing is an ass pull on the face of it. However, on closer inspection I do feel it CAN work if framed as something that the Titan Research Institute had discovered. It'd make sense, the Titans already violate many laws of biology and even physics, and a militant nation like Marley would definitely try and investigate all the strange quirks surrounding their greatest military assets. Looking back Reiner getting stabbed was definitely an attempt to plant it for when he gets his head blown off later, but I feel it was too little since we weren't aware of Marley or any of their potential institutions yet Definitely a sticking point in an otherwise very smartly written story. Not a huge one, but definitely something there
Man I am a Reiner stan first and foremost but I do completely agree with you here. This shit always struck me as so strange like yeah it's cool to see my favourite character surviving but why can he suddenly do all that?? I've always found it a little goofy. I agree the plot device where they can transfer the conciseness to their body is just stupid, like transfer where? there is no place in the body that can store a full brain worth of data
Honestly Levi should have done his usual thing and turned absolutely every bit of Reiner into minced meat, but he chose to be sloppy. This happens with Zeke as well. He almost killed him several times over.
when i was watching this fight again with my father i was saying the same thing, not only did reiner have insane plot armor from the start of levi "missing" his nape. It also seemed that all the characters just went dumb during this fight, Erwin and Levi standing and having a calm conversation while they're men get trampled by rocks, Mikasa and her team acted as if they never took a titan down after Reiner got thunderspeared and Hange came in and did it all for them within seconds while they sat on the building.
the reason they couldnt take down reiner is because they had only one thunderspear left and their blades didnt work. hange saved the day because she had one more thunderspear to open reiners mouth, letting mikasa take him down with the last spear the transfer consciousness thing is bs, ill give you that, but erwin and levi being cool is kinda their thing, so im fine with it

@@inteallsviktigt lol there’s a limit you do realize that right? If you’re damaged to the point that your body can’t heal enough, you’re dead. So nearly severing the brain steam, pierced through the heart/lungs, and a fall from 40 meters should have been more than enough.
I was also at the point where, reading this chapter, I had accepted it as an "Isayama HJ" intended to quickly power up Reiner to survive some crazy stuff. Didn't expect it to NEVER come up again though, it seems so useful.
I wonder why marley didnt also just send... a huge fucking army. They had people with Zeke that gassed a whole village, but for this they didn't really care about having a numerical advantage, when it's the most important thing by far
The in world explanation is that Marley was constantly at war and the reason they didn’t need the titans is because the rest of the world saw it as a war crime. So they sent there small warrior squads to fight the island devils
Reiner can't harden himself like Annie did with the crystal, this is most likely due to the female titan also known as the "mimic titan" Gains its abilities by eating other parts of titan-shifters, as Annie mentions Marley had her eat multipe things in titan form. So she most likely got the crystal-ability from the Warhammer
Except the only reason Eren can harden was because he drunk a bottled labeled with armor titan fluid That and the fact that Zeke's beast titan can also create Crystal out of his titan
Actually we did see Reiner harden himself. He was shown to harden his fingers when he climbed the wall. He just never hardened at any other point in the series. What VG said above also proves that wrong.
Not to mention that it is impossible that Annie got her hardening abilities from the Warhammer since the Tyburs had decided to separate themselves from the conflict and kept the Warhammer hidden for generations, Wily himself asks Magath if he can guess which of the Tyburs he thinks has has the Warhammer Reiner doesn't harden like Annie because his hardening permanent, and most likely stronger than crystal hardening, but it is the same thing, that's why it was affected by Eren using the founder to undo all hardening within the walls
Even though Reiner is my favourite character in the show I still hated this while watching it. I think what happened was that Isyama wanted to showcase multiple things through Reiner but still wanting him alive, like Eren's new hardening and the thunder spears, but he didn't think it though very well.
Honestly, this could've been easily mitigated by Reiner dodging just enough for it not to be a lethal blow and attributing it to his warrior training, but Levi can't be fallible in battle because he is stupid levels OP, so *of course* Reiner never stood a chance.
No, the first piece of bullsh!t was that the guy who found Reiner didnt see a massive outline of where reiner cut out the hole before tapping on that part of the wall.
I believe all of this coincidence has to do with how Future Eren influenced his life to instill the perfect conditions and values into each and every person he could, including his battles. I’m not sure how exactly, as we aren’t shown, but I believe that these many coincidences are because of Future Eren’s oversight (outside of Reiner being impaled in the chest, where his consciousness is, which is just what it is I guess).
Glad you pointed this out, on first watch Reiners survival immediately felt like a stretch to me. But I decided to take the shows explanation at face value, and decide for myself if it's valid later. I hoped it wasn't a quick lore retcon and that is was a more integral part of titan biology I guess
What's more problematic is that this entire contrivance didn't extend beyond that battle. Eren could do literally anything as the Founding Titan, including but not limited to: all this bull crap.
This is just one of the many reasons why the show kicked me out of immersion and interest so many times. "Oh he transferred his consciousness into his body" he can just... do that? that's just a thing he can do? also his BODY was IMPALED in the CENTER where you show it TRANSFERRED. The moment the Titans became fleshy mechas I knew the show wasn't for me, but then they pull bullshit that doesn't even work within the fiction of the show.

Bruh I thought the same thing like Why would Levi a Smart character And Leader Do something so stupid. , They needed to find a way To have Zeke Escape and Levi to be out of the story for awhile
It could be argued that Eren has worse plot armor than Reiner. He was literally decapitated in S4, not to mention he was devoured by a Titan in S1. Reiner, Eren, and Arman survived things they shouldn’t have, but why do we only focus on Reiner?
I never noticed they didn’t show the sword in his chest and as much as I love Reiner ye he should have been dead here so many times over. Oh and the fact his consciousness can go to his balls that’s a great point
That is so true even with out that there are no other examples of ANY titans let alone the armoured being able to transfer their consciousness, I mean no one else ever did anything like that in the whole anime. Ty collateral for this vid
I remember watching that part and being annoyed that reiner just wont fucking die. If they didnt want too kill him they just shouldnt have given him so many "deathblows"
3:20 I find it odd how he never used those super hardened fists on his fights, I'm pretty sure one hit from that and not even Eren would be able to tank it without his arm or head being pulverized (unless he did use them on a fight and i'm unaware)
There's plenty of fictional stories that do not do this. It's just lazy writing. I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Because it's made up it can't be consistent? Are you stupid?

I just can’t think of any realistic way that Reiner could survive a surprise attack against Levi, and I doubt Isayama could either, while still giving his characters the opportunity to take the initiative, so he came up with the transferring consciousness ploy. When I read these chapters for the first time, my thought was that Reiner would at least be permanently trapped in his Titan body, providing a severe downside to escaping death. But nope. From what we know, Reiner is pretty invincible.
To be fair, that still didn't stop him from losing just about every single fight.
The problem is that isn't even a viable way of explaining it away because Reiner got impaled through the neck before transforming.

Honestly I’m willing to accept this total BS just for the shot at 0:04 alone. I LOVE how gross and detailed Reiner’s half-regenerated head is
Another moment that I thought was dumb as hell was when Eren and co. were in the crystal cavern as it was caving in. So stupid.
Honestly id of called bs regardless we dont see hardening on that scale again till the warhammer titan
And its his first time using it
@@dozergames2395 Actually no, I would say that it makes sense for his first time to be so impressive, he just ingested it and there was a lot of it in his system.
Not too mention the fact that consciousness having a location in our body is a long time philosophical question itself
I've been thinking the same. Aot has such jawdropingly amazing twists and plot developments that it baffles me when Iseyama uses something as simple as plot armor
Given that every titan has some unique ability... (cart - ability to stay in titan form for months, jaw - has the hardest hardening, attack - can receive future memories, female - extra good at manifesting)
...I don't see a problem with Reiner's consciousness transfer ability. It matches the toughness of the armored perfectly, making him harder to kill.
Also we don't know how deep Levi stabbed into his chest - it would have had to go almost all the way through his torso to cut his spine.

The Cart probably heard Hange’s loud voice
another day of reiner being isayamas fav. but the last part got me crying HHAHAAH
Banger but Reiner is my absolute favorite character... Sooooo I'm happy for this bullshit
thank you! i'm so happy someone finally addressed this. reiner had sasuke levels of plot armor but most people don't talk about it yet
Thanos to Thor: You should've gone for the head
Reiner to Levi: You should've gone for the balls
Reiner:No one understands me.
Levi:A clown tought i am a kid. 🗿
The "so no head?" Fkn bodied me💀💀
Reiner can't harden himself like Annie did with the crystal, this is most likely due to the female titan also known as the "mimic titan"
Gains its abilities by eating other parts of titan-shifters, as Annie mentions Marley had her eat multipe things in titan form.
So she most likely got the crystal-ability from the Warhammer
Except the only reason Eren can harden was because he drunk a bottled labeled with armor titan fluid
That and the fact that Zeke's beast titan can also create Crystal out of his titan
Actually we did see Reiner harden himself. He was shown to harden his fingers when he climbed the wall. He just never hardened at any other point in the series. What VG said above also proves that wrong.
Not to mention that it is impossible that Annie got her hardening abilities from the Warhammer since the Tyburs had decided to separate themselves from the conflict and kept the Warhammer hidden for generations, Wily himself asks Magath if he can guess which of the Tyburs he thinks has has the Warhammer
Reiner doesn't harden like Annie because his hardening permanent, and most likely stronger than crystal hardening, but it is the same thing, that's why it was affected by Eren using the founder to undo all hardening within the walls
"I STABBED YOU THROUGH THE NECK, HOW THE HELL DIDNT YOU DI-"
"I think with balls"
Even though Reiner is my favourite character in the show I still hated this while watching it. I think what happened was that Isyama wanted to showcase multiple things through Reiner but still wanting him alive, like Eren's new hardening and the thunder spears, but he didn't think it though very well.
They're called ARMOR titan for a reason
This just makes me even more pissed that my man Bertholdt was the one who had to die.
cringe Bertholdt enjoyer
Really giving the “it has a mind of its own” a whole new meaning
Glad you pointed this out, on first watch Reiners survival immediately felt like a stretch to me. But I decided to take the shows explanation at face value, and decide for myself if it's valid later. I hoped it wasn't a quick lore retcon and that is was a more integral part of titan biology I guess
The f bomb at 2:40 caught me of guard so much. Love the video and the title
1:52 Beartholdt?
More like Barreltholdt!
I'll see myself out
consciousness is stored in the balls
Your analysis is awesome, I agree that with such an excellent show, little plot holes would stand out. Still love AOT with all my gosh darn heart
2:56 Reiner summarized in one phrase💀
This was when I knew reiner was going to live through the whole anime.
Makes me wonder how the story would change if Reiner died right here
Plot armour Titan, Isayama's fav character, no wonder he didn't die
this part, Armin surviving a fall from the height of the colossal titan, and Levi handing Zeke a bomb as a "hostage" are all unfortunate stains on the great series as a whole
Fancy seeing you here.
Ngl just saw this on yt shorts, ur content is hella good
3:20 I find it odd how he never used those super hardened fists on his fights, I'm pretty sure one hit from that and not even Eren would be able to tank it without his arm or head being pulverized (unless he did use them on a fight and i'm unaware)
people forgot that the real MC is Reineer. MC doesnt die
Eren uses ball transfer later in s4 when his head is shot off.
“Unrealistic plot twists.”
That’s what tends to happen when it’s a show rooted in fiction😂
There's plenty of fictional stories that do not do this. It's just lazy writing. I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Because it's made up it can't be consistent? Are you stupid?
Okay, there's unrealistic plottwists, and then there "My brain is my balls now so decapitation don't work no more! And no I will never bring this up ever again!"
@@patchwurk6652 if an author fr said that,. I wouldn’t argue with it. Cause it’s their story. If you have such a big problem with things like these, then go write ur own manga lmao. Get off isayamas D. it shouldn’t be his job to cater to what you think should’ve happened. It’s not my fault you have a problem enjoying this man’s story.
The consciousness movement power does feel a bit contrived especially when you consider that it’s pretty much never used again in the story. It was a onetime phenomenon. Later on it feels more believable when you discover how much the source of all Titan power is capable of, but up until nearly the end it feels like a disposable layer of plot armor…..for the Armored Titan, lol. Still loved the AoT’s story overall.
3:05 they can survive their limbs being chopped off & losing organs, I’m sure that drop was nothing to Reiner
That's not the problem, the drop DID nothing to him .
No damage at all ,he dropped on his head.
Is his head made of vibranium?
How come it didn't just splash like watermelon?
reiner taking "armor" in armor titan too figuratively he make sure every single bullshit asspull plot armor is in him.
but for real, i think at this point of the story, ishiyama trying to convey how strange and menacing the titan shifter is by making sure every character is shocked by anything the shifter do. it kinda hurt the story a little tiny bit as a whole, but not gonna lie, the first time i watched/read it it was cool. its encapsulate the mistery nature of titan and titan shifters.
If they did it the way you suggested, then Zeke would have had nobody to save him, and the show ends here.
Don't forget, Attack on Titan was named as the "Game of Thrones" of anime for how many characters died, meanwhile in the series we have characters with plot armor that AREN'T the main character lol.
