Who has a truck that has never loaded bags of sand or fertilizer or mulch? Then this split tailgate is awesome. Especially if you’re 65 with a bad back. Wish I had one on my 2017 ram 2500.
I have a 2020 Ram Rebel with Rambox and multi-function tailgate. I very seldom use the tailgate per normal function. I almost always use it in the split function. I wasn't looking for that tailgate when I was buying but it happened to be on the truck I wanted. After 2 years I would not have another truck without Rambox AND the multi function tailgate.
Never thought heated steering wheel and seats were useful. I was wrong, with a bad back and arthritis in my hands, using them extends my driving range on road trips.
My Ram has the ramboxes, and I use them all the time. Sure, my bed is a bit narrower, but I carry small stuff when RVing (ratchet straps, compressor, dog water bowl, leashes etc) more than I need the extra foot or so of space to carry plywood sheets or whatever. I didn't get the split tail gate, but I do have the step - which is handy when lifting my Blackstone in and out (it lives in the bed)
So my tow vehicle for my travel trailer is a 2001 Ford Excursion with the 6.8L v10. If you aren't familiar, the rear hatch is a 3 piece design: a glass top half that flips up and then a "tailgate" of sorts that splits in half just like this Ram's tailgate does (doesn't fold down though). What is really nice about the design is that I'm able to access the rear cargo area (where the dogs ride on camping trips) even with the travel trailer connected to the truck. If I had a standard tailgate that folded down, it would hit the the power jack apparatus on the A-frame of the travel trailer. On your next video featuring the Ram, you should hook up to a couple of your trailers and do some comparisons to see if the tailgate folds down without hitting the trailer jack, and, if it does hit, see if you can then swing them open in the split config without hitting anything.
In my younger days, when I drove vehicles like MGB's I used to scoff at people that had power windows. A couple of years ago I bought our youngest daughter a stripped down regular cab F150 XL that had crank windows. She didn't complain but I quickly realized I could not reach the passenger window or lock from the drivers seat without loosening the seatbelt and if the folding console was down you had to get out of the truck and walk around to that door. I got older and vehicles got wider. Some things are no longer luxuries.
I would like to see manufacturers put this type of tailgate on their HD series trucks! Would make getting into the bed of the truck to put your goose neck ball in place a lot more convenient...especially if you have bad knees!
I have this Truck just a 2020 with RamBoxs. I use the split tail gate every time. I have only open the tail gate down a few time. The thing I love the most about my truck are the RamBoxs. I like be them. My wife uses them just as much if not more than I do. This is my first Ram and now I will only get a Ram going forward.
A feature that I never thought I'd use in my truck is adjustable pedals. Everything I had ever driven before I got my truck didn't have them so I didn't know what it was like but man, once you use them and can super fine tune your seat and pedals to be perfect for you. Mm, it's nice. Also power adjusting mirrors are fantastic as well. A thing I never use is my Sun Roof XD.
I have a '21 Ram 2500 and added the flip down step to assist in getting into the bed. Like JD said, I'm not as nimble as I once was, it's been a big help. I also use a cargo bar across the bed so things don't go sliding up to the front. Although I forgot to put it up the other day and the box I keep my receiver hitch and other heavy objects in now resides right behind the cab.
I believe Amp Research is the originator of the BedStep fold-out step. Our 2009 Ram bought used, came with one installed, and it works great! I would recommend that anyone with a full-size pickup get one.
I have a bed extender and when its inside the bed it keeps things from going out of reach on my truck bed but that is a cool idea. Reminds me of my old Ford Excursion rear doors
That's a great looking truck having New features are nice as long as it strong and can support a guy that heavy I'm short too so that new tail gate is a great idea
Except for the problem of finding a bed cover that will work with the multifunction tailgate thank you extang! I hardly ever let the tailgate down the regular way it is just too easy to open the one side pop up and grab something or throw something in especially with my bed cover on. It is like a natural handrail for my wife to get in and out of the bed of the truck. The other thing I use all the time is the bird's eye view camera for pulling into tight spots so I don't scrub my wheels.
We have what they call throw and go, the dump has a paved area that is raised to the height of the large dumpsters. There is a rail and parking blocks in front of them, it sucks when you have a dump trailer and they won't let you go to regular dump. You end up having to unload it by hand. They have a section with tanks for dumping oil in, another section for dropping off paint, bins for compost (branches ect.) There are bins for metal and a paved area for appliances, then there are bins for regular garbage. It is pretty well set up to keep your wheels clean being all paved. It would be nice to have that tail gate, how easy would it be to remove to put the camper on. I have one of those extendable hooks stowed on the inside of the topper for when I have to reach stuff at the front of my 8 foot bed, works well. Having high humidity definitely makes it feel hotter or colder the it really is and makes it harder to breathe when you are not use to it. We were in Alabama with 100% humidity the best part about it is I could stay outside and not burn, it was nice not having to put on suntan lotion. At night with 100 degrees Fahrenheit and 100% humidity we had to turn the heat on to keep the windows from fogging up. When it is really cold out it is nice to have some humidity so you feel how cold it is outside. Out west in Northern Alberta as well as outer Provinces including Alaska the humidity is low, you don't feel the cold right away when you go outside, at -40 Celsius. If you go out with out being dressed properly and don't wear gloves it doesn't take long before the blood starts to freeze in your fingers, it happens before you feel it. Did you find any 3-point attachments to rent to help you clear and then set the new posts?
The Corpus Chrisit landfill always been a real pain I try not to go all the time. But I loved the Ram 1500 I’m look into buying the longhorn variant. 👍
Where I'm at in Washington we got to the Transfer Station instead of the Landfill. Usually its a good experience. I've made over 10,000 trips to the Transfer Station or as we call it "The Dump" in the last few years.
I have a 2020 GMC with the multipro tailgate. And with the package on my truck, but I must admit I use it quite often. Also never thought I would use the heated steering wheel as much as I do, but really like it. If GM had something similar to Ram boxes o would over the moon pleased with this truck. But more than likely I will be going back to Ram when it’s time for a new truck. This “professional grade” truck hasn’t lived up to the manufactures hype.
I would really like that style tailgate for getting a pallet father forward in the bed with a forklift. I usually remove my tailgate so the pallet can be pushed farther forward over the rear axle. With this, you wouldn't need to remove it. Getting the load another foot and a half farther forward makes a big difference on how a pickup rides.
My truck is a work truck, vinyl seats, crank windows, rubber floors but I love the idea of the split tailgate. When I knew I was going to be doing a lot of loading in and out of the truck I'd take the tailgate off and add a hitch step so you had two steps to get into the bed. This is even better because you can retain the 40% as a hand hold. Better than the Ford and Chev gimmicky tailgates in my opinion.
I don't have a split tailgate but my tailgate is missing right now and I'm seeing the benefits of that tailgate. That's something to think about with my next truck
In 2004 my F150 had sensors in the rear bumper that beeped as you got close to backing into something. At first I thought it was a stupid option. Never had it in my 93' . It saved me several times from backing into a short concrete post at the grocery store though. 2015 F150 didn't have it and I missed it. 2021 F350 does again and I won't own another without it again.
Also, this is the only fancy tailgate you can use with a trailer attached, or even a hitch in the receiver. Would like to see it with a trailer hooked up and display the tailgate again
Ram had Michigan plates on it. Here in Mission, TX, it's supposed to get down to 32 degrees. We're from MI and we came down here for the warmth. What can I say, great video.
I like the left half opens first. That way if you are parked on the side of the street it doesn’t get in the way. I would like to see if it would retrofit to a 2006. The only feature I really don’t use is the power adjustment for the pedals. I cycle it every now and then just to see if it still works. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.
My 96 F 250 HD 4X4, has just a standard tailgate. I had to jump up into the bed to get my table saw out and again to put it back in today. At 70, I will use my 4' ladder some days, yes, I still put in 40-45 hours/week remodeling kitchens and baths, plenty of ugly 80's kitchens here in Anchorage Alaska. Just a miserable, old, won't give up, guy!
I have a 2019 Ram 3500 LB, SRW (should have gotten DRW!!!), CTD, Longhorn edition that I purchased new. Really appreciate the power convex mirrors and 360 degree view. I have grown to appreciate every option it has and would definitely do it again, EXCEPT for the navigation system. It is a joke. A car navigation system on a truck made to hall heavy loads. I live in San Diego. Went to Quartszite last weekend. In order to get the navigation to recognize Quartszite, I had to say United States, AZ, Quartszite. It would not recognize Quartszite while I was in CA. What were they thinking? Yes I just updated the navigation system and maps in Dec 2020. Thanks for your channel!
I own a '20 limited, and the only option I don't have is the split tailgate. To get it I'd had to wait an undetermined amour of time to get the truck built. COVID had messed that all up and the truck that I have was the only one available with all other options. I live in Louisiana and the truck come all the way from west TX.
I use mine all the time. Way more than dropping the tailgate. The only time I drop the tailgate is if someone is helping me load a large item. Then the barn doors get in the way and make it harder.
38 degrees wish we had that kind of heat. That tailgate is a cool idea, but I will take an old school tailgate any day. That tail gate is going to be expensive when something goes wrong. I just don’t see it holding up very well if you live in the salt belt and work the truck
A glorified station wagon I enjoy the push button start on my 17 Accord, radio controls on the steering wheel of my 04 Dodge 2500 diesel and the simplicity of my 03 F150.
I have a 2013 Ford with the step and handle and I wish I had the new model with the handle in the tailgate so I didn’t have the bump and handle making the tailgate unflat.
A feature I always thought was ridiculous and would never use was a heated steering wheel. Wrong. On a 35 degree or colder day, it's worth every penny.
It's like everything else. Air conditioning, electric windows, cruise control, etc,etc . Don't need until you get it on a used vehicle . Then would not be with out it.
Do they offer this split tailgate on the dually trucks and one thing I wish Ram would do for the duallys is make a rambox side using the dually fenders ( so much wasted space in these fenders
Does the tailgate have holding system to keep the doors open on say a hill. Would be nice for pallets. I put a flatbed on my truck and I’ll never go back to a regular box
How does the tailgate handle weight? Meaning if I stick a pallet of chemicals or the like, will it handle the weight on the latch? I use my truck as a truck. I assume it would be fine, just curious...
I’m 5’7” and 64 and I can’t reach without a step stool, which I carry with. I really wish my Ram 1500 had come with this tailgate. JD, I’m wondering, does the 1/3 section have enough clearance to open when there’s an travel trailer hitched? My current tailgate doesn’t clear my electric jack, so I have to unhitch to access the truck bed.
When I had my 2020 Sierra 1500 I'd use the bumper step all the time, the multiPro tailgate was annoying. Rocks and debris were constantly getting stuck in it. I would rather have had that Ram tailgate.
I’ve added two spring clamps to the side of the bed of my truck and mounted a 5 to 12 foot boat hook. I can reach anything in the bed! My Silverado comes with a step bumper that I use ALL the time, at 73 it’s a fantastic addition that doesn’t cost because it’s a standard feature on the Chevy and GMC trucks.
The number 1 useless item on my truck is the "moon or sun" roof is the one item that I never use on my truck. The second item is the power back window in it. In my opinion those two items should be removed forever...................

Love my Ram boxes. Wish I had the split tailgate
I thought that the 360 camera was a worthless gimmick. But now that I have it, I use it and like it.
The more I see of this tailgate, the more it actually seem to be the most practical to me.
Never thought heated steering wheel and seats were useful. I was wrong, with a bad back and arthritis in my hands, using them extends my driving range on road trips.

On my 2019 chevrolet silverado, it's the HUD. I never thought I would use it, but I use it everyday.
In this Texas heat I’m always thankful for the seat chiller!!!!! In the cold I’ll enjoy the seat warmer and steering wheel warmer as well.
I would like to see manufacturers put this type of tailgate on their HD series trucks! Would make getting into the bed of the truck to put your goose neck ball in place a lot more convenient...especially if you have bad knees!

I've been blessed by being short. So power adjusting pedal systems have been a great feature for driving

360 cameras, and front camera a lot in parking lots, rear camera when hitching up, heated/cooled and massaging seats, tailgate step.
Love my Ford
The Rambox is what will keep me loyal to Ram. Until someone else does it, I'm married to Ram lol
That is a good-looking truck
That's a great looking truck having New features are nice as long as it strong and can support a guy that heavy I'm short too so that new tail gate is a great idea

Split tailgate reminds me of the Ford Excursion back hatch. Useful then, useful now, worth the price? Thats all opinion.
Wish mine had it. Forklift operators raise my blood pressure.

I see there are slots on the fender wells. There maybe more closer to the gate. My Silverado has pockets for 2x6 dividers.
I love the headlights on my truck, they are so useful!
I post comments for JD to boost his algorithm:)
I use mine all the time. Way more than dropping the tailgate. The only time I drop the tailgate is if someone is helping me load a large item. Then the barn doors get in the way and make it harder.
Don't own one but next truck I buy will have one. You can hook up your chains and latch your gooseneck without having to climbing into the bed.
Ram should put that tailgate on all of there truck 2500&3500
Garbage trucks always have right of way at ours. The guy cutting in line also exists at all transfer stations, never buy him a beer.

I always see those mansteps crushed under the truck.
Wait, you go over the data plates on trailers but not the trucks you review, what a comfortable safe towing weight.
Guys from Michigan would just grab their ice scraper. 🙂
At 5 ft 6 in and 75 year it has great appeal
LIKE IT! (Says a 66-year-old)
I have a 2006 Dodge 2500. I wish I could get that tailgate for my truck. I'm also looking at installing the ram step.
So, the split tailgate is only good if you are old and feeble? Yep, I can relate…would come in handy.
A glorified station wagon

Jd have you looked at the spy photos of the 2023 ram 2500/3500 looks like ram is changing the mirrors to look more like Ford and chevy
Can you open the tailgate or lower it off of the key fob?
Wait i missed something is this your new truck or a demo
The number 1 useless item on my truck is the "moon or sun" roof is the one item that I never use on my truck. The second item is the power back window in it. In my opinion those two items should be removed forever...................
I can see the use,but would still have a have a hard time with the cost.
What is the. Price tag?
long lines
Good Morning. You think its cold in TEXAS then go north and you can FREEZE. Jack
The slit tailgate is nice but the price and loss of cargo capacity makes it a no go for me. That goes for the e assist as well. It only works on take off and with the gears these trucks have, you have more than enough torque to get the job done without the cost and weight of the assist.
How do you lose cargo capacity?
Why Michigan Plates on the Ram?
It came from Michigan. The manufacturer loaned it for review.
