  • Rogue Squadron was all over the Expanded Universe, including a series of books, comics, and highly successful video games. Since then, and the scrubbing of the old Expanded Universe (now known as Legends), Rogue Squadron material has been sparse. Though, there have been attempts over the years including an indefinitely delayed movie and several cancelled games. We follow the Rogues from their origins in The Empire Strikes Back, all the way to the present day. Take your targets and go!

I wanna take a second to thank The Retro Hour and IGN's interviews with Julian Eggebrecht, Retro Gamer Magazine's Turrican profile issue, and Digital Foundry's interview with Chris Huelsbeck as they provided a lot of great information that most videos about this series miss. Revisiting this video now, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but my main regret is that I should have properly cited those sources on day one.
Since then I got my hands on the Retro Gamer issue on Rogue Squadron and that had some information that I didn't know about, like how Microsoft tried to incentivize LucasArts to move Rogue Leader to the Xbox. Definitely give that a read too! Also the Turrican Documentary Blu Ray that came with the SLG Turrican Collector's Edition revealed that the motion capture animations for the pilots in Rogue Leader were reused from their cancelled 3D Turrican revival, Thornado. I'm hoping that documentary gets a wider release in the future because it's also worth a watch!

To be honest, I kind of liked RS 1 the best simply because the later games had everything be an escort/timed mission. There were several missions in RS 1 where you could fly around for hours messing around, I remember attempting to drop bombs on flying TIE fighters in the Kyle II mission, which I never achieved. Even dropping bombs on your fellow Y-Wings was ridiculously hard, though I did achieve that several times.

I remember the excitement I felt when I got my N64 and a copy of Rogue Squadron on Christmas day, 1998. My older brother and I spent almost that entire day playing the game. I believe we managed to get up to level 4 (the capital tower mission). It took me awhile to beat that mission because I initially didn't know which button allowed me to use the harpoon. Still, that was one of the best Christmas' of my life, and this game still holds up over 25 years later.

The "mission fail" theme at the news article is perfect

It was really interesting seeing you talk about it and also address the scrapped games! I didn't have the GameCube or the N64 growing up, so all these flew under my radar at the time, and I'm a sucker for forbidden unreleased stuff.
PS: Lair needed more time in the oven but even in its final rough state it was very fascinating and downright insane in terms of scale and ambition.

Rogue Squadron II was my first ever videogame, when my dad brought a gamecube home with 2 games: some random medal of honor(?) or smth idk I didn't care, and Rogue Squadron II. I sucked at it and couldn't even get past the first mission (I was like 5 or 6). I was always fascinated by it and now almost 20 years later I STILL can't get past that darned first mission, although now its due to emulation issues I've been keeping track of it for a decade now but the miracle work Factor 5 did on the gamecube is a sacred contract that cannot be breached, it seems lol. So many times I was close to getting an original gamecube yet so far by the time I was ready. This game will forever be a really good core memory for me.

This is a fantastic vid and exactly the kinda look at the Rogue Squadron games and Factor 5 as a whole I was hoping I'd find!! They're still some of my fave games and the ways they pushed their hardware always blows me away when I hear about them. I'm extra happy to see a Battle for Naboo mention since that one always gets overlooked 😭 Thanks for taking the time to make this and doing such a great job with it!!

I wanted say thank you for being such a wonderful creator! I actually watched you when you were doing Ranma reviews and found them to be delightful. That was way before my transition. Now I'm a year on estrogen and I came back to this channel after over a decade out of a sense of nostalgia to see you have transitioned as well! I wish you all the best and I'm looking forward to your Rogue Squadron discussion! 💗

As rogue squadron is on of my favorite games from my teenage years I was looking forward to the movie too. At least I found your video! Thanks for helping me get my nostalgia fix ma'am. You got a sub from me!
Edit: OMG, I just realized I was subscribed to you years ago when you were in the Star Wars retrospective phase. Somehow I got unsibscribed and you made some big personal changes so I actually resubbed. Man, I'm so glad I rediscovered your channel. I am collecting trans chick videos game creators like I'm a Pokémon trainer lately lol. I don't know why it is but you girls (you, leadhead and SulMatul) are really putting out great videos. I bet it's the unique worldview and sensibilities. Maybe it's a huge coincidence but I'm here for it either way. 😁
I didn't put the Fractalis connection together. That id a cool bit of history! Thanks!

Excellent video, the N64 title is one I always go back to. Also I’ve never heard of the planned X Wing VS TIE Fighter or Wii entries and felt simultaneously hyped and let down lol hopefully we see some of it someday - especially that remixed Hoth mission

I'm so disappointed the movie hasn't/isn't comming out. I would love a pilot/dogfight movie be the centre of a movie.. but i do wonder what the plot would of been... i always compare a rouge squadron movie to "Red Tails" with cuba goodin. Jr so i really hope it does happen one day

I found your channel through this video, and I've got to say: I'm glad I did! I only recently played Rogue Squadron II for the first time, and I was looking for something on the game's development history (I like to keep track of good developers), but I found so much more! I found an entire channel full of fun, well written game analysis (and plenty of other great stuff) all created by a really awesome person!
I can't wait to see what you talk about next : )
