True, lol, but DJ’s have many tools and ways to still make the tracks work in their set if they really want....unless it’s all vinyl then good luck...lol
Love the fact you are making a house track with the SP-404sx. It seems like almost all the videos out are hip-hop or downtempo. It sounds awesome and you make it look easy. Love the channel.
OMG ENRIQUE I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR A FEW MONTHS. so exciting to see other people thinking of similar workarounds to the limitations of the 404! I was going to make a video, but now I wouldn't want to step on your toes! GOOD STUFF!
I think the machine is way too complicated to set up a simple beat you be there all day just trying to get a drum beat or maybe even high hats simplify the machine for the price just make it work...without too many button pushing and setting up and erasing and going back and tweaking your BPM‘s its ridiculous
The PO-33 by Teenage Engineering is ace at making old school, lofi House music. Really has that crunch and rasp and paired with a little overdrive for saturation and it takes you right back.
This is the best 404 video I have seen, and I've watched a few to try and work out if I want one. I'ts the first one I've seen that actually made me understand how it works and how hands on and fun it looks. Great video, one of the best you've made.
And to think I JUST talked myself out of needing one of these. Please do more content like this, these types of top down/side view videos of your workflow are awesome!
14:00 “just go crazy” *loops complete silence* hahaha damn this vid made me laugh a lot! I really can relate to all of those SP problems like the 2 pad resampling fails or having to listen to the whole sample just to know if it loops well.. and if it doesn’t well then all over again! Hahahaha such a great video man I really enjoyed it thanks for sharing..
Spectacular! Anybody considering getting this sampler should watch this to understand this resampling workflow that the SP-404 is known for. Dude, I would LOVE to see you build a similar house track on an MPC. People rave about the workflow of MPCs.
They do that's because MPC workflow is about 10 times easier than this (doesn't involve coping, pasting and moving samples about every 30 seconds for a start) and you can actually do very complex things with an MPC that you could NEVER hope to do with a 404.
@@aikighost , that's what I've heard. Yeah, it's not a device for doing complex stuff. Budget, portability, and distinctive FX are reasons people mention for loving the SP-404. Personally, I don't mind the workflow that we see in this video. Nice results in a very short time, IMO.
This is super clever, man! I feel like sometimes the SP-404 is cursed to only make lo-fi hip hop beats. Nothing wrong with that, but it's awesome to see it doing something else for a change. Keep rockin!
I wish he would make another one of these but do a whole song, so educating and entertaining at the same time. Btw Ricky, I bought a sp404a today after finding you on RUclips and binge watching all week
as soon as u started saying "woah there buddy" i had to like and subscribe, bc that's exactly how i talk to my sp404 - sick video tho, you're a virtuoso!!
Dude! A long way from your first Elektron purchase. I am so proud of you and what you have become. Now you inspire me! See ya at MoogFest'19. Always love you man! #thebestfromthebest
That's fucking brilliant! No wonder so many people swear by this thing. Keep moving and don't look back. Everything it doesn't have is precisely what will hold you up👍✌️❤️
This is what makes the sp so popular, just look how fast he chops and arranges stuff when you don't have any menus to dive in. Such a great sampling sketchpad.
i actually think it's little things like that that make a track work, it feels great when you dance to it and you get it right (another exemple of this is Icky Thump by the White Stripes, a completely different genre but I love this kind of things)
You will love it. Sampler is propably best way to get into making music. Hardware sampler even more so. Just get field recorder and cable that you can connect to your phone for example and you can get crazy
Just the way you're doing it by feeling rather than an actual BPM amount just goes to show that you have to follow your guts on some things sometimes. And that "slightly dislocated" feel definitely works for house anyway. Cheers mate!
I’ve got the OG 404, trimming samples is kinda tricky, but just simply recording a full song into the machine and playing back is magic. The machine sounds beautiful. Converters? It’s a badass effects machine too.
Yea I've been trying to find something similar to rub a song through, nothing like it for some weird reason. I don't know if it sounds good, or bad, haha it's just magic as you say.
Trying to apply this knowledge to my Digitakt for some lofi house & techno. I’m having trouble getting bass tones to really match the chords I am sampling tho
Great demo! There aren't many good ones out there. I never understood why everyone has an sp404 but now a kind of get it. Please do another one! It sounds really cool!
Good stuff. I've been revisiting this and your resampling tutorials for the Digitakt. Good inspiration here. I'm getting a 404 soon to pair up with the Digitakt for the dangerous sampling duo!
Everyone here should go check out Ras G’s most recent project on Bandcamp. I’m not 100% sure how much is 404 but you can tel it was used and it’s all House
This video might just change the whole game. Amazing timing on the release you’ve reached out to a lot of 404hedz I’m sure I love your wooden table the grain looks almost as beautiful as the sp404’s graininess sounds
Dude, the SubSonic bass note generator technique is fucking dope! Also the pitch shifting doesn't sound that worse. People are just trashing the SP for nothing.
Thanks for sharing on #404Day, we love your work!
Oh man, this is one of the first demos of this that actually helped me understand how the heck it works! More sampler content please!!!
That sample end trim technique in reverse mode is brilliant.
Hell yes.
Life-changing! I don't think new 404 owners can fully appreciate the amount of time and aggrevation Ricky just spared them 👍
Si estuvo cabrón. cambió mi modo de usar mi sp
I didn't get the point of trimming in reverse, can someone explain it
@@robertbanys when you wanna trim the end of a sample you can make it reverse so you dont have to wait and play the whole sample
The loop being "close enough" would probably be a DJ's nightmare haha, offset a tiny bit every 4 bars !
oh trust me it is. i have some unplayable tracks haha
That's what makes it interesting.
@TheGameMakeGuy that's a typo, I meant "a tiny bit" ;) corrected

It's so crazy that so many people think the 404 can only be used for one genre! thank you for sharing this and showin' people how it's done

awesome to see a different genre made with the SP man! Really want to drop a lofi house tape some day!
Same man, but I find it hard to get this sound on just ableton
@@Huumf yeah for sure, I've tried lofi stuff in ableton but you don't get the warm sound that the SP gives!

Only a minute and a half in learning secrets. Resampling that kick for a loop was dope af.

i learned alot about the sp404 by just watching this, funny how its not even a tutorial but you made use of so many features of the sp404! good video
It’s hard to believe you make that house sound so good on the so-404sx.
the vibe you give off on this channel is crazy. Good work bro
Word on trimming ends in reverse, I discovered that technique ways back, you know your way around the SP man, Respect from Canada

Gunther McCullough what vst’s?
i know i'm going to have to watch this many more times to fully get all the tips you got, thank you dude! That subsonic bass technique is crazy
god the 404 is one hell of a box. I am so glad I’ve kept mine over the years. It is literally a DAWLESS god for simpler music making.
You need a sign that says “Genius at work.” Your hands are just a blur, spectacularly impressive.
After watching a few of your vids with the 404 I'm really appreciating the workflow. A definite add to my shopping list!
Love how you used reverse to trim loops and subsonic to create a bass line. So many good tricks in here, thanks!

Thanks for the watch and sorry to your wallet haha

It *makes* house to me.
finally someone made tutorial for another genre on the sp!
This is really helpful. I prefer this way to the sequencer it feels more natural to use rather than programming everything.
Love it man... I have a Sp404 and still don’t know what I’m doing lol!!!
Keep going man once you get the hang of it you will never look back, I find it so much easier to work without the sequencer.
When you are resampling you can make them mono so that you can hit more than 2 pads if you like. Used to hate having the resample cut off.
What really?! That’s awesome I had no idea
Yeah you can hit six total then right?
Such a good little moist peanut
Workflow is soooo smooth and productive! Do you have a crazy back catalog on a hard drive somewhere?
