This inlet and exhaust valve seat change of cylinder head wartsila 46 engine first heat up seat area and valve seat cool down upto -20C with ice or liquid oxigen best good work
wow I can see where the propane torch and a freezer would fall short, I like that brass hammer technique! What was that liquid they put in before hammering though? (Edit) oh it was g20 red loctite used to hold the bottom of the seat I guess... and then molykote was used on the two rubber(probably viton) sealing rings on the exauhst valve?! does this engine have water cooled valve seat??! Whoa cool
The valve seats were immersed in liquid Nitrogen before fitting. Most probably this is the cylinder head's manufacturer advised procedure...I am not so sure though about the brass hammering of the valve to fit the seat. It should have been a special device that could have easily been made in that factory, but they have chosen the easiest way, not the correct one.
They use the old valves tack weld, or brazed to the valve seats, tack welds only, then hammer it out from the stem side. This is the procedure We used onboard our ship's engines
i am working in an italian factory making this cylinder belt. lt looks like from the cast iron if i need the cylinder head i am in service thank you..
Oh my. I had to take a seat when I saw the size of those seats. Just saying
Reminds me of the ALCO 4 stroke locomotive diesels of the 1950 & 1960's. 4 valves with intake larger than exhaust. Not as big as this engine.
Yes
ALCO’s have a dedicated coolant passage in the liner flange. Notice the coolant space was only in the exhaust valves.
The guy putting the rubber O rings on REALLY needed gloves to avoid cold burns but IT'S A GREAT VIDEO. Not likely to see this in my life.
Why don't use hammer ...
It's nitrogen liquid ...
Overing must pull check...sum time it's cracked
Are these valve seats cooled? I see porting where they fit in, I guess that's what the O-rings would be for
How many diameter tolerance between seat pocket and valve seat ?
Or differential diameter between pocket and seat ?
Freezing the seat to be able to insert it implies an interference fit where the seat is actually larger than the bore at normal temperature.
Wrong application of Loctite sealant, should apply on grooves of exhaust seat shrunk fit diameter prior pressing it in and not hammering it.

Thing is, there will be an instant layer of frost on the valve seats the moment you take them out of the N2. Wouldn't that mess up the fit?
Eu trabalho fazendo essa montagem na Wartsila aqui no Brasil
Ship engine I take it

Damn!!!!!
Is that a two stroke engine from some giant that broke his pit bike lol
You're right two stroke engine cyl. head with 4 valves LOL
@@allanbolotano7174 haven't you heard of a 2 stroke supercharged diesel? Many trucks in the 60s were like that. But this is a ship engine.
@@OffGridInvestor this is a Diesel generator Power plant shore based
So how do they get them out? lol
Cut them out.
