  • In this video, Dr. Arun Chandrashekaran, a medical oncologist at Aster MIMS Calicut, discusses the diagnosis of colon cancer. The primary diagnostic test for colon cancer is a colonoscopy.
A colonoscopy involves using a flexible tube with a camera on one end, known as a colonoscope, to examine the inside of your rectum and colon, which make up the majority of your large intestine. This procedure can reveal irritated and swollen tissue, ulcers, polyps, and other abnormalities. If any suspicious areas are found, they are biopsied to determine if they are cancerous.
Various tests are used to identify the stage of cancer, including CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans, and blood tests like the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test, which measures the level of CEA protein in the blood. Elevated levels of this protein can indicate the presence of certain types of cancer.
Treatment for colon cancer depends on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy.
Colon cancer is a type of cancer that can be fully cured when detected early. Be aware of the symptoms and take charge of your health.
