The dangers of saying if you pay a bit more, you can get this or that, lead down a rabbit hole. So in this case, once you start recommending the RP3+, you start down the territory of pay a bit more for a base model steam deck.
100% with you. You can very quickly go down that rabbit hole. I guess you need to define the systems you want to play and then make a decision. I guess my reasoning for the RP3+ is I think for the price it captures that sweet spot of compatibility Vs price and value.
You raise some interesting points but don’t compare this device to other similar handhelds at similar price points. The RG35XX does precisely what it states in the pack, and nothing more. Sure if you spend another 70 quid, you could get something altogether different. The device is for those who want to relive their youth, without breaking the bank. Build quality is top and so is performance. So long as you understand it’s clearly stated limitations.
Yes I think that seems to perhaps have not come across in the video. I guess the question I wanted to pose is “Who is this for…?”. I love it, Anbernic devices are great, and I have played it quite a bit and as a classic retro system for £55 then you can’t go wrong. For me this device is a nice nostalgic showpiece and the kids love it. I think the points are almost all positive but it just isn’t my primary device.
For ~$50 it is everything any reasonable person would expect. I find it unrealistic to recomend something that is more than double the price as an alternative. This is THE budget king right now, with a RP3+ taking the sub $200 prize and Steamdeck being the top of the tree.
I agree with you in terms of the tiers but I think the points in the video stand. The build quality of the device is fantastic. It certainly feels a lot more premium. I think I’m actually very positive about the device. The idea was to try and make a video that demonstrates who this is for. If this works for you it’s fantastic. However not everyone can afford multiple devices. If you are looking for just one then I would say spend the money on the RP3+ as I think actually from a value proposition it’s the better device. I’m certainly not taking anything away from this. The other reason I can’t recommend is the issues I have had. A quick Google shows I’m not the only one. So it’s a risk right now. Of course there are many people out there.
@@thegamelounge659A quick google also shows you everyone who has problems with the RP3+…your argument doesn’t stand because every single device on the planet has issues and people talking about said issues, even iPhones which are notoriously prone to not having hardware and software issues have problems and if you google those terms you will find it so it’s unfair to google “rg35xx issues” or whatever you googled because if you look for issues with a device you will certainly find them no matter the device so your personal issues aren’t relevant in the quality of the device for the hundreds and maybe thousands of people who have had no issues
I have not had any issue with mine. Powers off and on like normal. The screen is fine, the sd slots are fine. No issue with the battery although mine is the 2100mah, but still runs for hours with 1.4.9 GarlicOS. I've had it since the end of February. My first such device and it's everything I was expecting it to be. I was very deliberate and weighed the choices and price and it turned out great for me.
Yes I think most people it’s been great. Anbernic sent me a new motherboard and sadly I have the same problem. Very frustrating. So I decided to pick up a Miyoo Mini +
It's for old guys like me who grew up on all these games! Bought mine with Garlic OS installed and ready to go. People always wonder about the future. The future is here for me right now! All these games and more... I'm in heaven! There are games on here I never had enough quarters to finish! This is awesome!
I’m with you here. The 360 was the last generation I really played. When I look at the backlog of games I’d like to play from NES to 360 I could retire from new games. A game has to be really special for me to play it now
As someone who primarily is interested in 16 bit gaming, this device along with the Miyoo mini + both do a great job in allowing me to replay some of those classics from the Genesis (does) era. I'm not really keen on playing 3D games as much, and I find that most of the best 3D games I would play are now remade or easily available elsewhere.
Appreciate the video. I've got one on the way - hoping it doesn't have the power issue! I'd say your reasons for buying hit me pretty close. Limited budget for this, want my 5 year old to get to try out some of the games my wife and I used to play more authentically than an emulator on the laptop, fond memories of Game Boys, some 8 and 16 bit nostalgia. Yeah, I am the target audience!
The original Neo Geo hardware suffered slowdown in a fair few of its games.. Metal Slug series and Twinkle Star Sprites certainly did.. as you demonstrated both those when talking about slow down I’d say that it’s replicating the platform perfectly 👌
@@thegamelounge659 I had access to a NG cab at my local laser quest back in the day. I also own one of the arcade MVS boards and a few carts.. including Metal Slug 2. Also a couple of Neo Geo CD’s.. so I’ve certainly had some exposure over the years :) Even if you play NG via emulation the emulated hardware still retains the original slow down.
Metal slug certainly experiences slow down on genuine hardware. The implementation on the MiSTer FPGA has a special build with a form of overclock to get around the problem. Slowdown is authentic.
Love this device!!! I prefer it over the RGB20S which has loads of screen bleeding unfortunately. I literally had to buy 5 just to get one where the screen didn’t fall out after having a shit ton of screen bleeding. I finally did get one that was perfect. But even so, I found myself still very much in love with the 35XX. The only Powkiddy device I care for is the V90 (I own every color that’s how much I love the v90’s). But the RG35XX is my go-to device right now after much/many disappointment in the retro console field. The quality is way worth more than the 60$ paid for it. Truly. It feels like a superior device tbh. You get more for your money. You must admit this. Even with tiny issues it’s not as bad as it should be considering the price.
Yes I agree, for £50 this is incredible value and build quality. I have tended to steer clear of Powkiddy. ANBERNIC changed the game for me quality wise. That being said I have owned 2 Retroid systems now
It's my third handheld and I think I am fine with this since I already has a T618 device. I bought this merely for pocketability and 4:3 ratio screen. This is great for on the go play and old systems gaming. Thank you for your awesome video. Subbed.
Yes, I am old. I frankly don't understand all the complaints. You pay for what you get and then some. I recently hooked up my old SNES and PS1 on my tv. Modern TVs ruined the graphics and these small screens do so much more for the playability and experience. Games were expensive back in the days. I remember paying 120 up to 180 euros (estimation translated to Euro and including inflation). You get what now pre installed? 5000 to 8000 games? Without ads and extra in game purchases.
Oh I am totally with you there. Having all these classic games from childhood in a portable manner is incredible and for the low price too. I don’t think there are too many complaints about the device. Get what you pay for… Sure, but if it fundamentally is faulty that’s something else. The good news is Anbernic did send me a new motherboard and it certainly has a few tweaks and updates vs the one I removed from the device and so far it seems to have done the trick.
@@thegamelounge659 hi, sorry I wasn't necessarily talking about your specific situation. I did happen to get a device that was also faulty in a different way. It had some problems with the second sdcard slot. That is not ok. It should work. It is more general complaints I come across. I do get there are other devices and a bit of research gets you your best personal experience. That said, if people want the real experience: To today's standards the original game boy screen was horrendous: no lighting, bad contrast and a lot of fading. What is also failing with these new devices is the constant 'brrrrrrrrr' background noise you get over the speaker. Also, as with my super Nintendo, the buttons rattled quite a bit. But if it worked it worked. I remember back in the day complaints were more about ergonomics.
Have you tried minui on it? I put minui on mine and haven't had any issues with it, plus you can change things like aspect ratio for games, and with minui you can slightly overclock it
I had it for a couple of months now and i am having good time with it, I have not touched my Miyoo mini since that thing is small for my hand and eyes 😂.
I love the Miyoo Mini. For the price point it was incredible and that’s the reason it became so popular but I actually think this is a better device. This just feels good to play.
So there is no difference, the 128gb just contains more memory if you want to add your own games not provided by Anbernic. Most supported games are very small. It’s only really the CD systems (PS, Mega CD NEOGEO CD) that take up the space. I’d go for the 64GB. Another thing worth saying is the cards provided by Anbernic are not branded and seem to have a high failure rate (at least from Forums). So if you ever wanted to upgrade to 128gb you can pick up a branded card for around $15
I was trying to download Garlic os and when I did I noticed that there were no games, Is there a way to move the games from the stock os over to garlic or do you have to add them manually
I liked the video in general, you made some good points. I currently enjoy my unit, and wouldn't want to spend more on something else. It hits the right nerves mainly for GB games, everything else is bonus. Plus, got switch and pc as main platforms, and I'm not retro enthusiast or anything. What I'm trying to say is that there an might be more groups of people this device appeals to which might not be obvious. Subbed for support.
Yeah that makes total sense. Thanks for the feedback. Totally with you that as a second device this is great. I didn’t take mine out the house. I’d just pick it up every so often for a quick game. It just lives in my kitchen
I want a portable device to play PS1 games like THPS4 and GTA1. What would you recommend as a reliable that has pre-installed PS1 games? Don't care about other platforms really. Thanks for the video I was thinking of getting this but it's not perfect. I don't mind paying more.
To be honest I don’t don’t know what’s on the device as standard. I tried a few games and they weren’t great. This will easily run both the PS games you mention
Thanks for your honest view! It's great to see some kind of review from someone who speaks after being using it for some time and does something more than just unpack it, try for 5 mins and bye2. I'm thinking about getting an RG35XX given that I wan't that "game boy" feeling back. But let me ask you a question; did you try the Final Fantasy saga on that? I'm specially interested on the PSOne classics (VII, VIII and IX), and I don't know if it would be messy try to play them without a stick. Those games ain't my priority, but it would be great if I could play them without much truble. I don't want to spend any more money than that and I don't need a stick that I won't use for the 99,99% of the time. Cheers!
Actually yes, Final Fantasy 7 worked really well. I didn’t try the others but it’s a great way to play the game. The resolution is perfect. If you just want a device for PSOne and below this is incredible value
I think the slowdowns you see on NeoGeo were present on the original console as well. If the CPU on RG35XX wasn't able to handle the emulation it would skip frames.
Yes a few people have said that and I actually checked out Twinkle Star Sprites on real hardware and it does slow down a lot! Arguably more than the ANBERNIC
I feel like these are going to end up like the games you would buy at the super market back in the 80’s - 90’s that had like 30 games, but with better quality games.
I got mine yesterday, was super excited. For 3 minutes. All of the games I tried to start said "File is corrupted", then turned off. Cannot turn it on anymore :-( After a few hours of investigation, I concluded probably the original SD card is dead, which is bad as it has all the games on it. Trying to flash a new one with GarlicOS today, let's see if that helps. But hoped at least I can try it without some tinkering :-(
Yes there seems to be a number of issues for various people sadly with this. Frustrating as I think it runs games on SNES and PSX slightly better than the Miyoo Mini Plus
@@thegamelounge659 Actually, replacing the SD vard with a new branded one, and adding the ROMs helped. Not trivial, but not hard either. The other main issue I have is a broken SD card reader, my TF2 slot is unusable.
I was considering getting an RG35XX because I like the form factor even tho I think my OLED Vita is still the best for 8 and 16bit emulation +GBA, but this whole the RG35XX randomly deciding to not turn on thing basically made me decide to never want to buy one, I didn't know about this problem until now.
I've subbed today but you've made me question myself when you ask who is this for! I'm past the half century mark (and you "sound" more mature 😬) and occasionally play on my rg351m in private... As I go on holiday next week I'm questioning is it except able for a 50+ man to be playing retro games on a handheld console on a plane without looking like an idiot
Not to shamelessly plug another video but I did exactly that earlier this year and took the Miyoo Mini Plus on holiday. Miyoo Mini Plus: 3 Months in… ruclips.net/video/qciWRwZLAcM/видео.html I had not problems playing on the plane. The small device means it’s pretty inconspicuous. I see it as no different to people playing games on their iPhones. Only these games are better. I wouldn’t worry about what others think. I love playing classic games to decompress. And yes I’m ‘older’. But if you are in your 50’s you still have 10 years on me! 😂😂😂
@@thegamelounge659 not a shameless plug, it's your channel after all...no idea why I've never found your channel before, I've been watching the big players for over 2 years now and it seems I've only just started receiving recommendations to your channel... This is for the nostalgia of playing a Gameboy back in the day and also for newbies like me that had tinkering, making adjustments, etc. Though Anbernic uses crap SD cards, this is for folks that just wanna play games straight out the box. I just want to play. I can learn how to tinker with OS and settings later. I still haven't fixed my rg351p because downloading OS and doing partition on ss cards, downloading roms etc is difficult. It was easier modding my PSP 1000 and PS Vita 2000. Especially the Vita. These Chinese handhelds are like rocket science to me because im not that computer savy.
Thanks so much for your comment. I think you make a really great point that the most important thing is playing the games! I am guilty of it myself. Where I get it all setup and loaded and only play the games to test.
Oh dude I feel ya, my Rg35xx is working perfectly and I’m enjoying my games heaps and hopefully it continues like this for years but if something goes wrong and I have to do that difficult shit and there isn’t an easy fix then I’m buying a psp and sticking with it 😂 psps are so good for retro games
I am new to handheld retro games and Ive never owned any of the anbernic devices, for those of you who have this one and or have used the rg351v, is the screen quality any different from this one ? And is analog worth it ?
Hello, I have never used the rg351v but I do have the 351mp which has a similar screen. I would say the screen on that has the edge but there isn’t much in it. If I was choosing between the 2 I would go for this device seeing as it is a lot cheaper and I don’t think the sticks are necessary
Its worth the price even just for the roms. I went down the portable emulation rabbit hole and i always want a bigger screen. Try playing resident evil on a 3.5" screen... not ideal. At this point im doing my "portable" gaming on a 11" tablet with an ipega 9083s joycon
Yeah the PS works well enough on here. I enjoyed playing it far more than I thought I would, but ideally you need a little more real estate. My ODIN 2 is on the way 👍🏻
Garlic could have gotten good but it seems dead. No update for over 2 months. I'll stay with stock. I've no problems with it and only with stock os the menu button works as expected. It sucks on every other os.
Yes it went from daily updates to nothing. Huge shame as I really liked it. I don’t know officially but any buzz about the ANBERNIC system seems to have died off. I play the Miyoo Mini Plus, not because I think it’s better but simply because the OS works
I am having battery issues. It seems to run down quickly. Sometimes, it thinks it is charging even when I am not. It also starts to get warm while playing GBA games. I recently got the Miyoo Mini Plus. It feels superior to the RG35XX (IMHO). I mostly liked the RG35XX, but I instantly fell in love with the MIni Plus.
It’s a tough one because it doesn’t seem to unpack everyone. If you Google it there isn’t a huge amount of posts on it but there certainly are some. So something to be aware of
I think there are many systems like the AYA NEO that do a great job with the GC. But yes. I do feel perfect gamecube emulation on a $200 device is the goal
Well who is this aimed at, erm anyone who wants a handheld that can emulate upto ps1 era of games. And it does that flawlessly been having a blast playing genesis snes and ps1 games on the go.
My d-pad was great. Maybe it’s a hit or miss? It’s a really good dpad. I don’t like the glossy buttons but it still has that pop back feeling to them and they feel really well they just could have used something better than gloss.
After two months of use, the machine does not turn on anymore :( It loops on the name Anbernic appearing when it is turned on and nothing helps. The problem comes from the 64 GB micro card. Big disappointment. There is a week I couldn't finish the last dungeon of zelda minisch cap because of the badly copied Rom and now the bike doesn't start at all! So yes, it's nice as a toy, but far too fragile I would have preferred ten times fewer games and that all that worked ten times longer.
Appreciate the comment, the video is describing the key criteria that make this device right for people. If you don’t fit this criteria then maybe this device isn’t for you. I actually think if budget is a significant concern and you want the most bang for your buck you should consider other devices. Yes, the Retroid may be double the price but for the wealth of additional functionality and systems that represents great value. If you purchase this, then in 6 months think, actually I’d love Dreamcast, N64 etc. then your money for this device is wasted. Hope this makes the comments clearer.

I think if they could do that these would sell a lot. The legality side of what they provide would make things somewhat more difficult
@@thegamelounge659 yes and the licensing especially the Nintendo side of things
So ANBERNIC has sent me a new motherboard now. I have opened the console but it certainly isn’t a easy straightforward process.
Upgrading the SD Card may speed everything up
I've subbed today but you've made me question myself when you ask who is this for!
Miyoo Mini Plus: 3 Months in…
ruclips.net/video/qciWRwZLAcM/видео.html
I had not problems playing on the plane.
RUclips at its finest! Anyway I shall trawl my way through your and hit the like for each in the hope you are recognised more.. Loving it so far, thanks for your efforts
Very kind of you, thanks very much!
I got it. It is great. The screen is big/beautiful. It can fit into my pant's pocket but feel strange.
I have both. 35xx is more fun. 1 analogue stick doesn't make that much sense. It only makes the device less pocketable.
Did you get the motherboard? What happened?
Sadly the same issue, so potentially a battery issue. I have now given up which is a shame because it’s a great device…
My ODIN 2 is on the way 👍🏻
Oh yeah? I'm gonna go downscale to the SF2000? :P
From my experience it would last longer. Such a shame. I hear rumours Anbernic is going to release a refreshed model
I just got it today 👍
Amazing, let me know what you think
Yes trying to pick up a MM plus, would be great to try. They look very similar
I’ve got one - no battery problems here . The RG35XX is awesome.
i was gonna buy one but then what you were talking about at the end if that kinda issue is present widely id rather maybe spend more..
It’s a tough one because it doesn’t seem to unpack everyone. If you Google it there isn’t a huge amount of posts on it but there certainly are some. So something to be aware of
I just want a handheld that can play gamecube competently that doesn't cost like $700, why is that seemingly out of the question
Because GameCube is a lot to handle for a little handheld device.
I think there are many systems like the AYA NEO that do a great job with the GC. But yes. I do feel perfect gamecube emulation on a $200 device is the goal
@@thegamelounge659 aya Neo is more than 1000 dolars lol
I would prefer Odin pro
yea, they really need to focus on gamecube and ps2 emulation because some of us are not that old lol.
Well who is this aimed at, erm anyone who wants a handheld that can emulate upto ps1 era of games. And it does that flawlessly been having a blast playing genesis snes and ps1 games on the go.
In essence yes, that’s exactly right 😁
The issue is that awful D-pad. I rarely see anyone address this.
I really didn’t mind it. What issues did you have?
@@thegamelounge659 super stiff
My d-pad was great. Maybe it’s a hit or miss? It’s a really good dpad. I don’t like the glossy buttons but it still has that pop back feeling to them and they feel really well they just could have used something better than gloss.
I like the stiffness, and it is very responsive, much more than my miyoo Mini plus.
Got to say having played a lot more of the Miyoo Mini Plus I do see your point here
After two months of use, the machine does not turn on anymore :( It loops on the name Anbernic appearing when it is turned on and nothing helps.
Yes sadly there seem to be a lot of stories like this. To be fair this is certainly not typical of ANBERNIC devices in general.
build a garlicos system on a new sd, you can get some reliable for 5-10€
The solution is to get a new card. The stock cards supplied by all these Chinese devices tend to be terrible.
@@thegamelounge659 thank you for your reply
@@thesidneychan This is the answer, it's not so much an issue with the device but an issue with the stock SD card being so unreliable
this is for GBA, not a 16 bit
Yes, there are a few 32 bit systems it can run. 32X and PS One also run great
Screen does ghost, thats also i/o lag.
Interesting, how bad have you found this? Does it make anything unplayable?
And for only twice or three times or more you can get a better device😵💫 this guy totally does not get what this device is for.
Miyomini is unplayable
I actually agree. The Miyoo Mini Plus on the other hand is a great device.
