    LEAKS!!! I am happy to say that we do not have this happen often, but when it does happen, we need to fix it. In this week’s episode, we are going to be finding a leak on the Spooner, Wi koi pond we just completed. It is as stressful on us as it is on our clients to experience a leak. We take your investment in us to create your dream seriously and these become a part of us. We truly love what we do and when something is not working the way we want… it saddens me. Well, I can sit and be sad, or I can come up with a solution. It took time to find the resting water line… then it was a matter of finding the location of the leak at that rested water line. We do our best to explain how we went about attacking this leak and how we fixed it to be sure it was running the way they expected. Thank you for joining us for episode number 100!!! I do a lot of reflecting on gratitude and happiness. I believe these things to be the result of a formula that is tried and true. If you never lie you never have to remember anything. If you say you are going to do something, you do it, you stand behind your work no matter what. It is easy to judge people when things go well, but it is when things don’t go to plan that true character shines through. That is why for our 100th episode we wanted to take our most stressful part of 2020 and turn it into a learning lesson for all those involved and hopefully help you, our viewer, fix any leaks you might come across. We are lucky to be able to do what we do for a living. We are grateful for the people we get to do it with and for the people we get to do it for. Thank you for helping us keep on going and get to episode number 100!

    I've seen some soil moisture indicators that might be helpful to locate the area to start. I like the way you used wood to support the patch as it dried.

      Thank you! We started with all those same ideas. Due to it being dry sandy soil, water just went straight in to the ground. This spot was damp looking but never moist. It was in watching some footage that I saw the strap break on this boulder reminding me that this boulder was a pain in the next... we thought it was the most likely place to start digging because of that.

    How much water loss would be normal or acceptable? I have a new Aquascape 25' by 12' pond with a 30'' stream and I'm losing roughly a 1/2 inch every seven days in the winter and one inch in the summer. I live high in the rockies with roughly seven feet of water falls through eight drops. Utah has super dry air but this is something that's really had me concerned so this video was perfect. Thank you so much for the content, it really was perfect timing for a newbie.

      Trevor there are tons of variables that go into evaporation rates. The biggest thing we can do to determine a leak, in my opinion, is a little bit of math. Ed The Pond Professor teaches us that we'll lose .5 to 1% of your pumps flow rate per day. Let's say you have a 5,000 gph pump, you could lose 50 gallons a day to evaporation. If you have a smaller pond with a large flow rate you may think you're losing water when it is due to evaporation. My pondless waterfall only needed to filled every two weeks in the summer, about 120 gallons. I had a 4k gph pump on a timer to turn off over night. In the fall I would have to fill it weekly. In this case we ruled out evaporation because we lost an inch a day until the water pressure changed and the leak changed to a 1/2 inch a day. That helped us determine it was a large leak. Because of the size of the pond, 30 feet by 25 feet by .08 (one inch) by 7.48 (gallons in a cubic foot) = 448 gallons of water loss a day. That's way more then the tolerance on a 10,000 gph pump. It also means we're looking for a sizeable leak. The rest test also eliminated our most common cause of water loss, a low edge.

      @@PondKingWaterGardensMN Thank you Nick for such an amazing and detailed explanation. That makes me feel alot better knowing .5% to 1% loss of the flow rate is normal. I think I'm in good shape. Again thank you!!😃👍

    How often do leaks occur ? What would’ve caused it?

    • @PondKingWaterGardensMN
      @PondKingWaterGardensMN  3 года назад

      This is the first leak we've had in a Pond since 2017. 2017 was caused when the client misunderstood our instructions and drained his pond for the winter. A rodent seeking refuge from the cold went under the ground level and chewed through the liner. This leak was caused by being unfamiliar with larger machine strength. In our E20 straps would hit a tension point you could feel and release pressure to not cause harm. This big machine didn't act the same and just kept pulling out past a tension point with ease. That created a pinch between the strap and the liner, the machine kept pulling the strap with the liner pinched and it created a slit like hole from being stretched and pinched.

      @MrCites1 3 года назад +1

      @@PondKingWaterGardensMN Wow, very specific. Beautiful pond though. I always wonder with everyone walking on the liner if people pierce it with a piece of gravel or something foreign.

    • @PondKingWaterGardensMN
      @PondKingWaterGardensMN  3 года назад +1

      I'm not a light person and I've never created a leak walking on the liner. That's a big reason I love gravel on the bottom too. If a deer finds its way in the pond they won't puncture the liner with their hooves as it is protected by a layer of gravel.

      So Nick looking at your video helped you find the spot. What from the video had you look at that spot. Leaks are the thing I worry about the most, so I’m looking fir things to watch out for

      @PondKingWaterGardensMN  3 года назад

      @@scottanderson3886 anything that jogged my Memory from the project... the time lapse we recorded versus what we used was very different... 25% of time lapse recorded was used. So watching my own recordings I saw that all the sudden the boulder was placed and next frames were us looking at it. That's when I remembered a strap snapping and falling and then having trouble getting the snapped strap out.
