The Heckler and Koch MP5 (and now civilian variant SP5) is the sub gun that ruled the world. And contrary to what many may think, in professional circles, it is still the sub gun that rules them all. I heard a quote recently......there are two types of people, those who don't like MP5's, and those who have shot them. And in my experience this is true. So to try to explain why the MP5 is so prolific, I had a conversation with James Williamson from Teufelshund Tactical. James is a legitimate SME on all things HK. I got to spend a little time training on the platform with him, and very much enjoyed our conversation. Check out his HK based training courses, and for HK gun smith services, he's the man. He's also got a RUclips channel that deep dives into various HK platforms.
What is the 1911 Syndicate? We do a few things. We started out as a real estate company primarily targeted at serving the military/LE/shooting/hunting communities. Consider it our "day job" and we can serve you pretty much anywhere in the USA. Next we're a content producer. We kind of fell into it semi by accident, and here we are today. We try to do things a little different and have some fun. Thanks for tuning in.

The comment section shows an abundance of shooters who don't understand why delayed roller blowback is better than your standard 9mm blowback platform, or that transferrable sears are widely available for the MP5 making it much more capable than your basic flavor 9mm PCC.
Couldn’t have said it better Jake and I are flabbergasted at the amount of stupid comments on this video.
@@chrisblau3116 lol you should see the comments my channel gets! 😂
It’s just weird man. The messages I’ve been getting are baffling
What!?!?! You mean to tell me my PSA AK-V isn’t “just as good”? …….. I’m shocked ! Lol 😂
Lmao gtfoh. Transferable sears are $10k... on a $3k firearm. Delayed roller blowback is supreme but IMO it’s not worth the additional cost when there are other much more viable options like CMMG’s radial delayed.
And why are we still talking about recoil on a 9mm PCC 😂. Ridiculous.
Why MP5? Because, we all have wanted one since we watched Predator and Die Hard. That is the correct answer.
Predator. All time great
that is the only answer
@@1911syndicate Get to thu choppa!!!
It still fires even when your arm gets blown off by an Alien shoulder mounted plasma gun!
Die Hard!! My favorite Christmas movie!! I recently got a Ptr 9c. I love it!! The first time I ever shot an mp5 was at a range 2hrs away from me. They had a FA mp5k you can rent. The first mag I did single, double and triple taps. I was amazed, darn near NO recoil. The 2nd mag, I let it ride on FA. Sooooo controllable!! I had a smile on my face ALL DAY from that experience!
I love TeufelHund tactical. I just got through building an mp5 I converted to semi and his channel really helped me with understanding the gun. I really hope his channel gets bigger because he is so knowledgeable on h&k and is a resource for anyone in the gun world. If my German is correct, his name means Devil dog or more likely hellhound.
Ahhh I didn’t know what it stood for. Cool
@@1911syndicate Teufelhunden comes from Marine Corps lore. According to the myth you are taught in boot camp, during the Battle of Belleau Wood in WWI, the Germans were so impressed by the ferocity and tenacity of the Marines, that they called them "Teufelhunden" which translates loosely to "devil dog," because they said the Marines fought like crazy dogs from hell. To this day, Devil Dog is a slang term of endearment among Marines.
Hes the hk go to guy. Stay far away from Tom Dresner and anything he teaches. Dresner is a legend in his own mind and his endless bullshit goes on forever.
Why MP5? Four words; roller locking delayed blowback. Delaying the operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped means the MP5 has less reciprocating mass, which makes it more accurate and controllable, two features that helped make it very popular among counter terrorist organizations and special operations groups who needed compact and accurate close quarters firepower. It also helps make the weapon more effectively suppressed, because hot, supersonic gases are not escaping out the ejection port as with straight blowback designs, in which the bolt begins traveling rearward as soon as the shot is fired. This was very forward thinking of HK, since 65 years after the MP5, the vast majority of SMGs still tend to be simplistic blowback operated with no delay or locking mechanism. You can add all the buffers you want to your B&T APC9, it still has more functionally in common with the STEN or M3 Grease Gun than with the MP5 and as such, can't claim to be more advanced. If you don't delay the blowback, you're just polishing a turd! O, and the HK Slap is bad-fucking-ass to any of us who grew up in the 80s...
I think you mean to say less recoil, not reciprocating mass. The bolt on the MP5 is a huge chunk of metal. I think you mean to say that the delay created with the roller system allows pressure to drop sufficiently that the resulting recoil impulse that is felt when the bolt does cycle is very minimal. Creating a smooth and recoil friendly firearm.
@@corynewton9311 The MP5 bolt carrier is a substantial piece of metal, but at 7 oz or so, is much lighter than most of its competitors. UZI bolts vary from about 14 to 24 oz, depending on the model. Having less reciprocating mass is one reason the MP5 has such a light, smooth, and controllable recoil impulse. This is possible because the delayed roller locking system keeps the bolt shut until bullet has exited the muzzle and operating pressures have dropped significantly.
@@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 If your figure of 7oz for the MP5 bolt carrier group is accurate I will concede that it is substantially lighter than that found in blowback operated PCCs such as the CZ Scorpion which is reported to have a 21oz bolt and that this reduced reciprocating mass would definitely lead to a lighter recoil impulse. I guess my issue with your initial statement of "Delaying the operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped means the MP5 has less reciprocating mass" is that it is an imperfect understanding of how the delay method operates which allows for less reciprocating mass. All firearms are designed to delay operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped. It's more the means by which the MP5 delays operation of the bolt that allows for a lighter bolt carrier group which leads to less reciprocating mass that then translates to a lighter recoil impulse felt by the shooter.
Both blowback operation and roller delayed blowback operation delay operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped sufficiently for the cartridge to be extracted safely. How they both achieve this is different. The roller delay uses the rollers acting on the receiver, bolt carrier weight, and recoil spring pressure to maintain the chamber closed and the blowback operation uses friction with a heavier bolt carrier in conjunction with a heavier recoil spring to maintain the chamber closed. Both accomplish the same goal, but as we've discovered the roller design allows for a lighter bolt carrier group which means less reciprocating mass and a lighter recoil impulse as a result. I hope this better illustrates why I questioned your initial statement.
@@corynewton9311 The bolt carrier group on a direct blowback doesn't really lock, though. It begins traveling rearward as soon as the round is fired, with only the mass of the bolt carriage and pressure from recoil assembly controlling this movement. There is no mechanism to lock the bolt carrier or delay its movement in a blowback system. The mass of the bolt carrier will limit its velocity and control how far it travels via inertia, but that is it.
The HK roller locking delayed blowback system is aptly named because spring loaded rollers physically lock the bolt carrier group in place and delay its reward travel until the bullet exists the muzzle and pressures drop. This is why its bolt carrier mass can be so much less than straight blowback systems.
@@corynewton9311 Here is Flannel Daddy's review of the HK UMP45, a blowback operated SMG. You can see in the slo-mo at the intro, the bolt begins rearward travel as soon as the round is fired, while round is still traveling down the barrel, which is why these systems are often known to produce flash from shell ejection port and muzzle. Sound, powder residue, and gas can all escape from ejection port, to varying degrees, from a blowback operated system because the bolt us not locked and begins exposing the chamber as it move rearward as soon as the primer is struck. whiruclips.net/video/onzmRmgD9w4/видео.html
Mr James Williamson knows..... great rundown gents! I will always respect the MP5 and it's capabilities.
As a federal law enforcement officer now retired. I was a firearms intructor and I'll state for the record that the mp5 is probably the best submachine gun ever made. And it is a weapon that will remain revalent for years to come. And it's the most accurate I've used. And I would love to see one clambered in 357 sig. Now that would be a upgrade that would elevate it to a totaly new leval. And one thing I really like about the 9mm version is how it stays on target in full auto. And I'll be completely honest I consider it the best made submachine gun ever made for cqb work. And rightnow I'm running a ar9 carbine as my primary home defensive weapon. And for my needs I consider it more than adequate for my needs. But I'm torn between getting a ar9 pistol or a PTR mp5 clone. Any way I'm going to make a decision soon. But I'm leaning towards the mp5. But I've got to I'm impressed by my ar9 carbine and a ar9 pistol has a lot going for it. But my has last round bolt open and uses colt ar76 magazines. And they are expensive. But I must admit it's a nice feature to have. And I'm totally familiar with the controls. And with a 10.5 inch useing a 124 grain plus p plus ammo. It raises the preformance of the round. And it's probably going to be what I'll get. But I'll always be a fan of the mp5. And it's way easier to mount essential lights and dot scopes which I've found to be essential for close encounters were it's feet involved and seconds to respond, a 9mm ar9 carbine or a ar9 pistol is as beneficial as a mp5 for cqb tactics as a mp5. And a ar pistol in 357 sig at 1600 muzzle velocity useing a hollowpoint bullets is a effective weapon for a compact close in use weapon weapon. But I'll always be a fan of the mp5.
Well said, your posts also wipes out about 150 videos about how the MP5 is not as good as they say or not worth having in your gun safe.
Non LEO but lots of trigger time on diff platforms, whether borrowed, at the range, or in ownership and there's JUST SOMETHING about shooting one. Seriously. I can't speak for everyone but when you see the price and one is just like....ugh....just get past that. Just rent one. Borrow one from a friend. Shoot one that's actually tuned, lubed, and well-taken care of - it's something completely different - period.
The barrier to entry will always be price - no doubt. One of my first CCW pieces was an HK USP .40 and I STILL miss that piece. Not the smallest, not the most ergo, but the quality if obvious. It's just ooooooozing quality. You can feel it when you drop the slide, you can feel it when you fire it, you can ESPECIALLY feel it when you work on it bc there's no slow, there's no complicated mechanics, it just works.
I have a few different options for home defense and I'll go down preaching that frangible 9mm (30 of them) freedom pills WILL get the job done, period. It also emits a VERY SPECIFIC sound when you drop that charging handle. It's a sound what strikes fear in the heart of a villain. One does NOT go into CQB against a sub gun unless they've really considered and planned - at which point you're prob already effed.
Iconic, a blast to shoot, putting holes in the same holes, and dead-ass reliable. I hope this platform never goes anywhere. Plus - as soon as you pull the tuned/built mp5 out at the range and attach the can - watch the group gather, bc they'll come. Guaranteed. Be a cool guy and let that 12yr old on their first range trip get a few rounds - instill that early.
It's a sexy bitch and there are reasons it's stood the test of time. Non-HK Fanboy here, but I still dearly love mine.
TYFYS. I'm also a retired firearms instructor and Local Officer (14 years SWAT). We had a couple of DOE 9mm Colts and mainly 5.56 Colt Commando's. We have lots of rural areas so the longer range option made sense. The difference in recoil between the MP5 and DOE guyn was night and day. The MP5 is a much better platform. I now have a MKE (HK tooling) Ap5K, and recently picked up a SP5 for $2,400 new at Scheels. Waiting on my SBR paperwork. It iwll hand's down be my go to long gun. Unless dealking with a person wearing body armor it win's in every scenario I'll be dealing with.
As much as I adore the MP5, you cannot ignore the fact that they cost twice what they should. MPX and a couple others have perhaps eclipsed it in most categories, but I am glad they are still around.

Speaking with Italian Sof (4th Alpini Airborne) they mainly run m4s,hk416 (now also suppressed .300 blk short barrel mcxs) but every operator has assigned a carbine, a sidearm and an smg. They wouldn’t go too much into detail as which kind of op would require an smg and not a 10.4” hk416, but the smgs in question were only mp5 variations , from standard to sd and k. They tried the new Beretta Pmxs but i understood clearly they didn’t like nearly as much and that there were some reliability teething problems

I must agree with all points made, especially the part about, "Those who dislike the MP5 and those who've shot them." As a gucci'd AP5 owner I must admit that I've completely fallen in love with my full-size. Of course, we've all seen the movies and such but I can tell what stays by my bedside.
It's an odd thing to hold a stamped receiver vs say, an HK416 or HK716. Despite being a bent flat and often CLEAR signs of imperfect welds, it still holds such an amazing draw to me. I have big bucks stuff and cheap stuff - it's not always about the money. I've fired some very rare pieces and distinctly remember the fitment and quality of an original Izmash Tiger....just saying - new tech isn't better tech. It doesn't work like that. Why? Two words: Die Hard
Seriously though, this is one of those firearms that really has to be used to be appreciated. I had an EVO Scorpion (great weapon, btw) and was always put off the MP5 due to the high cost. Always liked them, but never handled one. Then I had the opportunity to take one to the range - it was FA and suppressed. Oh my god it was a dream to shoot - a bullet hose and incredibly maneuverable. I had to wait until the clone prices came down but I finally bought the MKE civilian model for under $1300. Wow - just fucking wow.
My first gun, given to me by my father after graduating high school was a USP 40 lol
Was the cameraman having a stroke?
The way they are teaching you guys to reload those mp5s seems really odd. If your mag runs dry or low shouldnt you first lock the bolt to the rear swap mags then give it the slap seems way more intuitive that way instead of taking the mag out locking the bolt to the rear grabbing another mag and then giving it the slap. Idk thats just my two sense. Unless its for some sort of competitive rule reason its way slower to do it the way they've instructed you to do it.

I fell in love with the MP5 after my Marine Corps career also. In the civilian training circuit that continued to grow but the MP5 isn't gonna' LEGALLY happen so you go to the SP5. After seeing and firing some of the clones, finding out about more, and Iooking at price, features, dependabilty, as well as construction, hence the PTR-9c, 3-lug suppressed with the Dead Air Wolfman, binary trigger option, with multi-optic capabilty became my "drug of choice." Nonetheless, still an MP5 addict.
Semper Fi!🇺🇲 to you James!
My roadmap why I returned to MP5. Saw diehard and I wanted a MP5. Thought I wanted longer range so I switched to AR-15. Realized I do mostly short distance shooting. Went with a short barrel AR but it was too loud. Switched to 300 Blackout but switching from subsonic to supersonic was a myth because it requires rezeroing your sighting system. So I shot Subsonic rounds only. Then I realized subsonic 300 Blackout is a $1 a round and has the same energy and trajectory as 9mm but 9mm has less recoil. Went back to MP5!!!!
We will still be using the MP5 on space cruisers for ship security in 2223 and diplomatic protection in our first talks with any federation or first contact.

Nice idea, but having a shotgun that operates as a semi-auto and a pump action adds too much complication (more to go wrong and a more complicated manual of arms). More trouble than it's worth IMO. An MP5 is a far better CQB weapon than a semi-auto shotgun which is too long and has too much recoil with buckshot and slugs. Best used with low power lock buster, bean bag and dazzle rounds IMO, for which a dedicated pump action is best.
@@Lutz101 Good point

Absolutely. Throw a can on, run subs, and you have the quietest setups ever. You also get rail space for lights lasers etc.
If it was just ‘a pistol round’ it wouldn’t be still used around the world with LEO for 50 years.

Especially on subs
Have you ever accidentally smacked yourself on the ass when you pat yourself on the back? 🤣
Psa: ARV9, AKV9

8.5in 300blkout from everyone
HnK: hey let's give them the mp5....
Too late to the game boys way better options and platforms.
This is so true. I love my SP5 but my DDM4v7p or Q Honey Badger in 300 blackout is definitely the go to in an emergency.
You lost me at the best sub gun is from PSA. Come on dude, do better
@@1911syndicate not saying best just saying other companies coming out with other options.
Poors gunna poor.
@@carldouglasmiles5594 Its not even about being poor. With all the subgun offerings on the market these days, who is buying an MP5 for $3k+, that isn't a fanboy? Its being outclassed and tbh, Id rather have my CZ Scorpion or 300BLK in a permissive environment.
I’m very torn between buying an MP5 (a clone, not an HK) or an LWRCI SMG45. I love little pistol caliber…erm, pistols….lol.
MP5
Wasn't that HK guy in the show Modern Family and the Dawn of the dead remake lol
Solid investment.
The p7m8 is my #1 wish list gun.
High on mine as well
It's a little thing called class sweaty
Lol
Nyet Commrade...AKV is the Master Race..for real got to train with an MP5 back in the day, lived it...
300 blk 8.5in upper is the master race.
Yea but there’s an undeniable fact that the MP5 is the sub gun that has dominated the market
Kalashnikov Vityaz😤
@@1911syndicate Well name some other sub machine that was on the market? Seriously all I remember from the late 80s is the Uzi and the Mack 10, the MP 5 won be default. I mean the Model T dominated for its era, then innovation and competition put an end to it. Is this the "Twilight" of the MP 5? Only time will tell, will we speak in reverence of the MP 5 like we do the 1911 10, 15 or 20 plus years from now? Once again only time will tell. But to be fair the MP 5 is a great weapon, but there are better ones coming on the market. Just my thoughts...
@@kingjehukhan8541 Theres a Walther model, a Beretta, two steyrs, the MAT-49, it even beat out later SMGs like the Spectre and Colt SMG....The Mp5 was universally well liked... it even beat it's own H&K replacement, the UMP. I'll admit it's dated, but you can't deny it was the gold standard for sub guns for over 50 years (thank the SAS and LAPD) only getting eclipsed when short barreled rifles and duty carbines started to replace it. No other SMG has received such popularity and notoriety, only the Uzi comes anywhere remotely close....
300 blk 8.5in uppers tho
This. I was wondering if he was going to comment on SOF's request to replace the MP5 with the Honey Badger.
@@turnitdowntyler of course this guy wasn't going to comment on that. He works for HK and would never say anything critical of them.
But why? Either you run supers and may as well run 556 instead, or you run subs and your shooting a pistol round instead.

*stop them as easy.
Yep. Definitely want a 11.5 (556) or 10.5 (300aac), 9mm on hip for backup.
Yea the thing is though, James has the experience to make his statements
@@1911syndicate I respect him. I haven't shot an mp5. They're too expensive. But I know plenty of guys who have used the m4 in those tight spaces and had 0 complaints to put bad guys down. This isn't the 80s any more. Gas systems work on short ar15s now. Does an mp5 have a purpose, yes. A small and special purpose that my nobody ass would weigh it's in fact obsolete like I said, we live in a world of short barreled rifles that work better
@@justaguy8961 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Except the US Army, CBP, DHS, Airforce, needs accessories to mount optics, bolt doesn't lock back, non duty weapon compatible mags..other than that still relevant?
Sub guns are obsolete. The groups that truly need something like this is police/civilians. that is where this kind of weapon shines.
Yeah this is an hk commercial
It’s as if none of you watched it. Or at least refuse to acknowledge anything said
@@1911syndicate I think most of the things he said are biased. A 10 inch ar is superior to an mp5 of the same length. Noise? Last thing they cares about when bad guys need to die and good guys need to live. 556>9mm no matter how you cut it. He said an ar15 is jack of all trades master of none....yeah ok lol. Laptop bag gun? Why not somethin like a Glock 17 on your hip lol? Meth labs filled with armed and possibly armored up dope heads, I need a rifle caliber platform not a super pistol. The mp5 works, but an short barrel rifle works better. End of story
@@1911syndicate I watched it...that platform is outdated..the sub gun in general is not. Learning a different manual of arms due to design limitations isn't a bonus
MP5 is cool, but expensive for what it is.
Parts are expensive too.
The good stuff isn’t cheap
@@1911syndicate and expensive stuff also doesn’t mean it’s good

Doing reloads wrong lol. It’s back, empty mag out, new mag in, forward. Not mag out, back, new mag in, forward.
There’s no wrong way-w/in reason, of course. Some prefer to replace the mag (fully loaded, mind you) and charge it sans the glorious HK slap.
Why am MP5? I don’t remember John McClane using a mpx to retake Nakatomi Plaza.
argument ends right there doesn't it? Best Christmas movie ever
Hans Gruber would’ve smoked him
The Tactical Ginger 🧑🏻🦰is back with a new Vid 😏
👍🏻
How drunk was the camera operator?
Yea not our normal camera guy
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Everyone on here debating if the mp5 is still the goat, and I'm here getting sea sick!
Running a sub gun on semi negates its usefulness over a carbine.
Not necessarily. Depending on model, the carbine will still be longer and heavier.
@@JaronActual lethality first. Rolling in against AKs with a pistol caliber dumb unless you can kill via volume
@@ModernTacticalShooting Assuming the sub-gun will *always* need multiple rounds to incapacitate a threat, and that a carbine will *always* do it in one is ridiculously ignorant.
Even with a semi-auto carbine, you still put multiple rounds on target.

Maybe it is. Maybe. It. Is.
No, it was Charles Brosnan
Why not lock back before removing the mag?
That would be economical from a movement standpoint. I think it just slipped and forgot
Two people talking....seated....you could literally set an iPhone on a chair to video it. And we get this. Is this surveillance from a shirt button cam or something?
