  • Sun political columnist Brian Lilley explains how Justin Trudeau’s government is lashing out at the Doug Ford government as the planned electric vehicle battery plant, one of the biggest industrial investments in Canadian history is under threat due to Joe Biden. Work stopped Monday on the Stellantis-LG battery plant in Windsor, Ont., with the company saying in a statement that the Trudeau government hasn’t delivered what is needed to get the plant built.

sure - but buying jobs has been the auto industry for decades. It's really more about the guy who dropped out of high school working the brake press and the spot welder making $20 than the guy who was born into the autoworkers' union making $70, because if the assembly plant shifts, then the cut metal components guys - the labourers, truckers, welders, engineers, draughtsmen, etc. - all shift.

Ford is no better than Trudeau. They both think Canadians have infinitely deep pockets besides trying to force their will on everyone. It is absolutely absurd to hand out 13 Billion dollars for a plant that costs less than half of that. Especially to a non Canadian company. What should be happening is that they open mines to supply these plants and also enforce closure agreements which include paying for cleanup of dangerous materials left behind when they close/leave. The only reason VW is looking at Canada, is quality labour at cheaper rates and less stringent environmental controls. They would use China or another third world country if they could get the quality product they require.

It doesn't matter. The power grid in Canada will never be able to handle that many electric vehicles until it gets a major overhaul. It may be fine in the winter, but, what about the extra demand for AC in the summer? BC is having a heat wave now and is worried about the grid collapsing. Just in Windsor Ontario alone, the last ice storm blew up at least 6 transformers. Power was out for hours. Canada's infrastructure is way behind.

Could it be that no one has any confidence that people will be willing to rush out and buy a high priced, high spec Golf Cart, if I see two E.V.s in the day I would be lucky, do I know anyone who owns one or indeed plans to get one, No. When Automobiles made their debut at the start of the twentieth century no one got a subsidy to make them and people rushed out to buy them because they made sense and replaced horses and mules, does anyone think the same thing can be said of E.V.s?

Someone please explain to me how these EV Battery plants are a good business case? Canada does not currently produce lithium but has hard rock spodumene deposits and brine-based lithium resources. Australia is the world's largest lithium producer, accounting for nearly half of global production in 2021.
Lithium brine recovery is a straightforward but time consuming process. Salt-rich water is pumped to the surface and into a series of evaporation ponds. Over a period of months, the water slowly evaporates and a variety of salts precipitate out, leaving a brine with an ever-increasing concentration of lithium.
These are the largest reserves of lithium on the planet, Canada isn't even in the running. 1. Chile · 2. Australia · 3. Argentina · 4. China · 5. United States.... With Australia as the top exporter...This means we'll have to import the Lithium as we currently don't produce it, and when we do, its a environmental nightmare.
So...in short, we are currently in the top 3 in reserves for a product the world needs, but Trudeau is seeking to dismantle that, then we drop in revenue. When will we have to drop out of the G7 because we are no longer the economic powerhouse? Trudeau is a epically stupid individual, who is running the country based off of Extremist rhetoric and feeding his nonsense as gospel to the public.....Clue in Canada!!

Stellantis and VW both have plenty of money and resources at their disposal, and they can afford to build the battery plant on their own. If they won't, then that means there isn't a business case for it. That means none of these companies should get a dime of taxpayer money to do this. From any country or any level of government. Problem solved.

The long-term the Bank of Canada will maintain the current high interest rates. Even worse possibly start raising them even higher!!
