  • VW Transporter Buying Guide - Part 2 -What engine, power and transmission are available?
Petrol, Diesel, manual, DSG automatic, 150bhp, 204bhp ? Which to choose?
I have made my decision on engine an power following this conversation.
Next onto what type of base van to look for.

I bought a VW Transporter T6 Kombi Highline van 140bhp diesel SWB with tailgate.
Slowly turning it into a camper van / day van with bed. I will also need something for cooking, cooling, sleeping, drinking ?? Choices to be made.
I have lots more to do though, I have a new electrical system, using Victron components and a Lithium LIFEPO4 battery, so I obviously need to install some power devices. I have a new sound system, with Focal speakers and ibus 2.1 amp, Playstation PS4, which will be removable, TV's on headrests.
Lots for me to look forward too and it would be nice to take you on the journey.
Please do let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.

I am not sure that folk would often buy a new VW camper van with the 102 bhp engine, robust though it is. Lower powered vans have often been sourced as ex-commercials and are converted after. They tend to be cheap and high mileage. A friend converted an 84PS van with 160K on it, prior to conversion. It cost him £750 but it was OK (ish).

The lower powered ones seem to be utilised a lot by converters. Cheaper vans as a base. Personally not for me.

Would you recommend 102 bhp engine for a work van to carry loads of tool?

Brilliant information video thanks. Just wondering, does the 5-speed in the T6 feel revvy at cruising speed?

No and many talk about their economy in a positive way.
Personally though if I was having a camper and fully loading it with gear, I would opt for the more powerful engine (6 speed manual or 7 speed DSG) Especially if you thought about towing.
Test drive each of the engines and see what you think

I’ve read absolute horror stories about the 180bhp engine due to the EGR / oil cooler. I found an absolutely perfect van for us but it was a 2013 with the 180bhp so had to leave it well alone.

Yes that is indeed very true. One I avoided also, no worth the risk when the engine has known significant issues

      What about 180k miles on a 2018 2.0 dsg 150bhp?
